Dark Remnants by L.K. Hill
Street Games Book One
Release Date: September 3, 2013

Synopsis
In the most dangerous city in the country, one controlled by a sadistic gang called the Sons of Ares, Kyra Roberts is searching the deep places for someone…

Kyra has come to Abstreuse city to find someone she’s lost, but walking the underbelly—a dark alley system residents call the Slip Mire—even in disguise, is rife with dangers. Kyra must stay on her toes if she intends to live. After crossing paths several times with the same detective, she wonders if his work and hers might be connected.

Gabe Nichols has worked homicide in Abstreuse for three years. Dead prostitutes and gang violence are part of the night shift. When a woman who looks like a street junkie but acts like an intellectual saves his life, he’s intrigued. Another woman shows up at his crime scene, and Gabe’s instincts kick into high gear when she clams up. Two cases involving strange women who won’t tell what they know are too coincidental.

If Gabe and Kyra can’t find a way to collaborate, they may not live to see the sunrise. Doomed, like so many others, to become gray, unmarked graves in a forgotten fracture of the Slip Mire.

****Guest Post****

Hello Bookworms! I’m so excited to be here to promote my new book, Dark Remnants. Brandee asked me to post about the research I did for the story. In truth, I didn’t do much conventional research. Mine consisted of watching television and daydreaming. (Isn’t a writer’s life great?)

A surprising percentage of my story ideas start out as fan fiction. I don’t think I’ve actually written fan fiction since junior high, but if I really like a story, I find myself imagining where I would go with it. I don’t write it, but I think about it. If it really takes off, and I can’t get out of my head, I’ll probably end up writing it.

Of course, it changes a lot by the time it’s fully imagined. I think to myself, “I’d love this to happen, but it wouldn’t be very realistic. How can I make it realistic?” The answer can change the characters, setting and time period. By the time I’m ready to write, the story bears little resemblance to the one that gave me the inspiration.

I’m a huge fan of crime series like Criminal Minds and CSI. While watching them, I thought to myself, “What if there was a woman who, by all appearances was a street junkie, but she approached the police and gave them valuable information. What if it was obvious to them that she wasn’t what she seemed, and she started to inform for them?” Questions arose about what sort of place this would happen in, if she really wasn’t a street junkie, what would make her take on that lifestyle, and what sort of law enforcement officers would value her help while supporting what she’s doing?  All of these issues percolated in my nerdy brain until I couldn’t help but right them.

(I tried really hard to resist, but my fingers just found the computer keys, you know? ;D)

So now I have book 1 in the Street Games series. This is not your typical crime drama novel, not one where there’s a murder or a serial killer that goes loose at the beginning, and by the end, the murder is solved or the perp is in custody. This is more akin to recent crime drama series where it takes an entire season to solve a case. My characters will work on more than one case throughout the series, but there will be a connective (unsolved) string that runs through the entire thing. My point is, don’t expect all lose ends to be tied up in the first book. There’s plenty more to come.

So that’s the story of Dark Remnants, or at least of its creation. Hope you all enjoy it!

I'm a novelist who writes across three genres: fantasy/sci-fi, historical fiction, and crime drama.  I live in northern Utah and come from a large, tight-knit family. I love to bake, read, and watch plenty of T.V. And I plan to keep writing until they nail my coffin shut. Or the Second Coming happens. You know, whichever happens first. ;D

  1. Oh this is something I'd love to read! I love CSI as well, even if I'm behind on episodes now - I know they're waiting for me on my iPad :) It's so great to learn where ideas come from, and a crime novel is something I haven't read in a long time!

    Thanks for sharing, Brandee :)

    1. What a coincidence, Lexxie...I happen to be a big fan of CSI too! Although I haven't watched it since Lawrence Fishburn's first season. LOL I haven't read a crime novel like this in quite awhile so I'm excited over it. Thanks for stopping by, my friend! *hugs*

  2. What an interesting post! I'm sure a lot of authors begin their ideas and stories in much the same way.
    Thanks for sharing!

  3. YAY! So glad you posted this guest post. I love L.K. - she's so sweet. The research and idea for the book is wonderful. I had to stop watching Criminal Minds because it gave me too many nightmares LOL. Thanks so much for sharing! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. Thanks, Jaclyn! Yeah, I am rather fond of Liesel too. :) I always worry about asking authors where they get their ideas (like Georgina making fun of Seth's readers...) but it's fascinating to know. :) I have to tell you I think it's hilarious that Criminal Minds gave you nightmares but you read books full of supernaturals. ;) Ah, I guess it's the fantasy vs. reality, huh? Thanks for stopping by, Jaclyn.

    2. Definitely the fantasy vs. reality. If it's scary and it could actually happen to me - I'm not that into it LOL. I'm a big weenie.

  4. I am such a TV girl. I used to re-imagine the storylines in my favorite shows or add characters. How awesome that she found her inspiration from TV and I love that the series will be a crime drama with multiple investigations. So cool!!

  5. I love CSI and Criminal Minds and love the idea of the series following an arc of multiple investigations. I really enjoyed Liesel's Persistence of Vision and am looking forward to branching out into a new genre with her :)
