That's What HE Said #38 ~ Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #17

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies @Chapter Break. Here's the deal: every Thursday, post a line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. Keep in mind, these are direct quotes from dialog in the books. The quote doesn't have to be romantic - just something our hunky hero said to his lucky lady. Be sure to link up over at Chapter Break as well.

My pick this week for That's What He Said is from:

Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia

This is from a scene where Blake and Livia are going out for a date... Livia's sister, Kyle, picked out a dress for her and Blake is rather blown away.

***

"Livia, you make the rest of the beautiful things in the world cry for even trying at all. You make it hard for me to breathe."

*~*~*~*~*~*

I think this scene speaks for itself but I wanted to share it because it illustrated the pride Blake felt despite his situation. It also illustrated the tenuousness of Livia and Blake's relationship in the beginning. After this scene, because Blake says he would eat the sandwich if she were feeding fifty other people, Livia brings at least fifty breakfast sandwiches to the train station the next morning. And she's finally able to feed Blake.

"You're early." His eyes stayed on her face.
"I made you a sandwich," she announced, presenting it proudly.
Instead of more smiling, Blake's whole face disengaged. He put his now lifeless gaze on the ground and nodded with grave seriousness.
"I'm not a charity case." His words had sharp edges.
Livia bit her lip. "I make a really great breakfast. I just wanted to share."
Embarrassment crawled up her throat like heartburn. She'd obviously crossed a very prominent line in the sand.
"I didn't earn that sandwich." He stared at it like it might come alive.
"Well, from my point of view you did. You've escorted me to my car, and you've entertained me for weeks. I appreciate it." She watched his eyes for sign of life.
"Any man should be expected to shepherd an unattended lady to her car." Blake now moved his gaze to her feet.
Of course, he wants to be a thoughtful gentleman, not a trained seal getting food for tricks.
