**Book Blitz & Giveaway ~ Short Rides ~ Lorelei James**

I've never reviewed one of Lorelei James' books on my blog I haven't read one since I started blogging. But when it comes to sexy, modern-day cowboys, no one does 'em better! So I'm very excited to be a part of the book blitz for Short Rides. These are short stories involving characters from her Rough Riders series, so it probably helps if you've read them. If you haven't read them, hop to it. And make sure you have a fan and/or ice water nearby. ;)

*****************************

Short Rides is an anthology compilation of two novellas and one short story in the Rough Riders world. These are NOT meant to be read as standalone stories, but are a peek into favorite character’s lives after the happily ever after…

The stories included in the Short Rides anthology are:

King of Hearts* — Deputy Cam McKay deals with a murder/suicide case on Valentine’s Day.

Rough Road — Chassie, Trevor and Edgard Glanzer spend a romantic weekend away from the ranch and kids celebrating their anniversary…only to return home to face their biggest challenge yet.

All Knocked Up — Keely and Jack Donohue are having a baby. Given Keely’s raging pregnancy hormones, will Jack need to wear a cup in the delivery room?

Excerpt from Rough Road

“Mama, what’s a faggot?”

Chassie’s entire body seized up and she nearly dropped the bowl she was washing. She turned her head and met the startled eyes of her husband Trevor, who was packaging leftovers on the counter beside her. She managed to ask, “Where’d you hear that word?” in a steady voice.

“At school. A third-grader said my dads were faggots.”

She briefly closed her eyes. Living an unconventional lifestyle in a conservative rural area guaranteed this question would come up at some point—but she hadn’t expected it this soon. Their six-year-old son Westin had just started first grade a month ago.

Chassie rinsed and dried her hands before she turned around. “How about if we wait to talk about it until Papai is done giving Max his bath? You can stay up a little later tonight.”

Westin’s big blue eyes were somber, suspicious of the bribe. But he nodded and returned to his “homework”—an activity book they’d purchased after his disappointment at not having schoolwork every night in first grade.

Trevor came over and set his hands on her shoulders. He kissed her temple and whispered, “Come on, Chass. Baby, take a deep breath. We’ll get through this. That word doesn’t have the power to destroy what we’ve built unless we let it.”

She nuzzled his jaw. “I know that. It’s just...”

“Mama!” A little person slammed into the backs of her legs. She glanced down. A naked little person.

Two-year-old Max grinned at her, his brown eyes triumphant, his dark hair sopping wet.

Edgard sauntered into the kitchen, a bath towel draped over his forearm. “That boy is as slippery as an eel.” He wrapped the towel around Max like a straightjacket and hoisted him up  amidst Max’s happy shrieks and giggles. “Kiss Mama and Daddy goodnight, little streaker. Then if we can wrassle your jammies on fast, we’ll have time for one book.”

“Two books!”

Chassie smooched both of Max’s chubby cheeks and smoothed her hand over his wet hair. “’Night, Max. Love you.”

Trevor kissed Max’s forehead. “Love you son, ’night.”

Edgard’s gaze winged between Chassie and Trevor. He mouthed, “Problem?”

“I’ll fill you in upstairs. I need to check on Sophia anyway,” Trevor said. He looked at Chassie. “I’ll tuck her in if she hasn’t already crashed.”

Four-year-old Sophia ran at such high speed all day that many nights she conked out while watching TV or playing in her room.

The guys disappeared upstairs.

Chassie finished cleaning the kitchen and headed to the basement to throw a load of clothes in the washer. Her mind had locked on Westin’s question. She knew one thing about her thoughtful son—the taunt hadn’t been tossed at him just today. Westin tried to figure things out on his own, so she worried he’d been dealing with defining the nasty word for longer than a day.

She leaned against the wall, fighting tears, fighting memories of the cruelty directed at her growing up. The jeers—lazy Indian, ugly squaw—still lingered years later. Back then she’d been so shy she hadn’t fought back. Her brother Dag might’ve gone after her tormentors, but he’d been fighting his own demons. No doubt he’d had the word faggot hurled at him.

What really caused that long ago hurt to deepen was the knowledge that if their father had known Dag’s sexual orientation, he would’ve flung that word at his son without hesitation.

When Chassie, Edgard and Trevor decided to add kids to their family, they all three worked every day to make sure their children knew they were loved. To make sure their children knew their parents loved each other. And to show them that love is what built and what sustained their lives. Especially when it was love that a lot of people didn’t understand.

Chassie held on to that thought as she scaled the stairs.

Trevor plugged in the nightlight and left the door open a crack before he headed down the hallway to the master bedroom.

He removed his long-sleeved shirt and T-shirt, tossing them in the hamper along with his dirty jeans. After washing his face and arms, he slipped on a pair of black sweatpants and a gray tank top. He’d need to channel his frustration after they talked to Westin, because guaranteed he’d wanna punch the shit out of something.

Faggots. Who taunted a kid—a kind, innocent little boy—with that term?

You would have.

Goddamn. Trevor didn’t want to think along those lines, to remember the judgmental asshole he’d been at one time. He’d been raised that way—as had Chassie and Edgard—which was why they were raising their kids differently.

He perched on the edge of their gigantic custom-made bed, forearms resting on his thighs, his face aimed at the carpet. Westin and Sophia were aware their family was different from the norm. But due to divorces and remarriages, didn’t most kids these days deal with multiple parents? How was it anyone’s business how they lived in their own home? Or how they loved each other? He’d bet the ranch very few traditional family units were as attuned to each other as theirs. They had to work harder at communication because of having a third partner.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way—regardless of the societal repercussions.

Footsteps fell across the carpet. A pause. “Did you mean to leave the light on in Sophia’s room?” Edgard asked.

“No. Guess my mind was elsewhere.” Trevor glanced up. “Was she still awake?”

“Nah. She just yanked the covers over her head. I shut the light off.”

“Thanks. And Max?”

“Out. He didn’t last through one book, let alone two.” Edgard gave Trevor a once-over.

“We working out tonight?”

“I’ll need to hit the heavy bag after...”

“After what?”

He sighed.

“Trev, what’s goin’ on?”

So Trevor told him.

Edgard didn’t say anything. Then he crouched in front of Trevor to get his attention.

“That’s not all of what’s bugging you.”

The man knew him so well. Trevor reached out and ran the back of his knuckles along Edgard’s jaw. He hadn’t shaved for a day and Trevor had the sudden need to feel beard burn on the inside of his thighs. On his chest. Scraping on his cheeks and neck as he kissed Edgard senseless.

“Dangerous to keep lookin’ at me like that, meu amor. Burning me alive with those fiery eyes of yours won’t make me forget the issue at hand, as much as I’d like to.”

“I know.” Trevor dropped his hand. “I f#ckin’ hate that I used to be that type of kid Westin is dealin’ with. Anything I didn’t understand, I belittled. I laughed when I made kids cry. Laughed. Jesus. How many people I bullied growing up would say I’m getting what I deserve? Seeing my son cry.” He exhaled. “I’m to the point I can handle what anyone calls us. But it breaks my damn heart that Westin is hearing that shit.”

“Hey. You’re not the same man you were. Thank God for that.” Edgard stood and held his hand out to Trevor. “Worrying about karma coming back to bite you in the ass won’t help us now.”

As soon as he was upright, Trevor tugged Edgard against his body and buried his face in Edgard’s neck. “I’m grateful every damn day that we have this life.”

“Me too. We knew goin’ into it, it wouldn’t be easy.”

“Some days I can’t believe we’ve all been together eight years. And other days, I feel like my life started when I met Chassie and you came back.” Trevor lifted his head. “Do you think we oughta cancel—”

Edgard covered his mouth with a brief kiss. “No. The three of us need the time together. Chassie will be relieved that we’d planned to keep Westin out of school tomorrow anyway.”

“So we’re all set?”

“Yep.”

Trevor grinned. “Chass is really gonna be surprised.”

“I was surprised. It was a sweet, romantic thing to plan, Trev.”

“What can I say? You and Chassie bring out the best in me.” Trevor kissed him, more than a soft peck but less than the tongue tangling soul kiss he preferred. “Let’s go talk to our son.”

Defiant Heart by Marty Steere
Historical Fiction
April 14, 2013
Penfield Publications

Synopsis:
Two extraordinary characters. One unforgettable love story. In the spring of 1941, young Jon Meyer’s family dies in a tragic accident, and he is sent to live in a small Indiana town. He arrives to find himself unwanted and shunned. Mary Dahlgren is the mayor’s daughter. A pretty girl, she could have the pick of the boys in town, including Vernon King, the star of the vaunted high school basketball team. To the chagrin of her friends, though, Mary has always been more interested in books than boys. That is, until she meets Jon. But Jon and Mary are kept apart through the efforts of Mary’s father, who perceives their relationship a threat to his political aspirations, and Vernon, to whom Jon is a rival for Mary’s affections. For months Jon is subjected to a painful ostracism. Then, just when the young man’s earnestness and perseverance begin to win over many of the townsfolk and it appears that love may conquer all, tragedy strikes. As the country is caught up in war, so too are the young lovers swept up in events beyond their control, leaving both fighting for their very lives. If, against the odds, they are to be together, each will need to find the strength, the courage and the resourcefulness that beat only in a defiant heart.

My Review

Oh boy! I will begin my review with a tissue alert. You will be needing tissues while reading this book. :)

Defiant Heart is emotional, gripping, poignant, appalling, and absolutely lovely. I love historical fiction, especially well researched, well written historical fiction. Defiant Heart certainly fulfilled all my expectations and then some!

The novel tells the story of Jonathan Meyer, a young man who endures all matter of tragedies and injustices, and yet courageously perserveres through it all. And in the end becomes a stronger man that any parent, grandparent, or friend would be proud of. It's not only a tale of war though. It's also a tale of love that will make you believe that love does conquer all.

Defiant Heart deals with themes such as social injustice, love, and forgiveness. It is set against the backdrop of WWII and we are witness to the atrocities of prejudice committed in our own country. We also experience the war through the eyes and actions of our hero, Jon. I am extremely impressed with the historical accuracy and feel of the detail of the war.

There are wonderfully wrought supporting characters without whom Jon's story wouldn't have been so affecting. Jon's grandmother, for instance, who learns to let go of the past and love her grandson. Jon's friends, Walt, who was Jon's first friend in Jackson, and Ben, who taught Jon to fly are integral to the story. Jon's flight crew members are brilliantly drawn. And, of course, there's Mary, Jon's sweetheart. The intense bond between the two set them on a course to overcome any obstacle to be together. In fact, Jon says states at one point, "Nothing is going to keep us apart." And although many forces conspire against them, both Jon and Mary defiantly stand against them.

There is so much detail woven throughout this novel. The trauma Jon suffers that brings him to Jackson. The persecution he endures at the hands of so many. Mr. Steere effectively paces the action throughout the novel. The story he tells so compelling, heartbreaking, and ultimately heartwarming.

Yes, I do indeed love a well crafted piece of historical fiction. Defiant Heart is exactly that!

The countdown clock reads ten days until the end of the world. The citizens are organized. Everyone's been notified and assigned a duty. The problem is . . . no one knows for sure how it will end.

My Review

Echo is a stellar read. It's action packed and suspenseful. It's well written and makes a few political statements, in my opinion. I'm once again stepping out of my box a bit with a science fiction read...and it was well worth the step! :)

The end of the world is coming in just ten days. The Council has enough power to rewind time in order to figure out the cause of the end and then try to circumvent it. They will do everything in their power to stop the end.

Ashara is placed on the Ethereal task force. The bizarre thing about it is that she didn't know she had power to manipulate ether. She accepts her position in order to play her role in saving the world, of course. She wasn't planning on having her ex-boyfriend as her new leader, however.

Rey, Ashara's best friend, is a Breather. He has the ability to manipulate air. He also is on a task force assigned with preventing the end of the world. Rey gladly accepts the responsibility and believes in his noble cause.

Loken, Ashara's ex-boyfriend and new leader, believes strongly in the Council and their goals. So strongly, in fact, he gave up Ashara to pursue those goals. He has good intentions though. He's trying to protect the girl he loves. And when push comes to shove, love trumps all.

This was such a fascinating book. It takes place on Earth-Two, which is similar to Earth-One. It has similar social structures and communities. I admired the reason behind the initial migration to Earth-Two. A group of people disgusted with humans' destruction of Earth-One, the pollution, and their reliance on technology. There are similar social structures based on abilities and affluence. The Council is at the top, serving to govern the populace. The elemental practitioners follow - the Breathers, Benders, Movers, Burners, Flooders, Seers, and Ethereals. Outside of these levels, people were of not much importance. There are also the Believers and the non-Believers. The Believers are the original colonists of Earth-Two who worship the two suns as gods. I found this structure to parallel not only our society as a whole, but teen social structure as well.

Echo also has religious undertones - those who believed in the gods of Earth-Two and those who don't. Those with faith who also manifested elemental abilities believed their faith improved their abilities. I also found this to parallel self-confidence - more confidence equals better ability (at least perceived).

The race against time kept the pace of the story moving and there was always something happening. There were also a few mysteries to solve such as the mysterious manifestation of Ashara's abilities. The only issues I have with Echo are the reasoning behind those that are threatening the end of the world, and the reasoning behind the Council's belief of Ashara being a threat. I felt that it wasn't explained in depth enough to be really plausible.

All in all, Echo was well paced and exciting to read. It also provides a positive message to readers about the power of conviction and self-confidence. I really enjoyed it.

About the Book

Some are destined for greatness . . . others for pure unadulterated misery.

After catching her boyfriend with another woman, Laura struggles with beginning again, knowing
deep down that she is destined to be unhappily out of love for her entire life. Needing some time to
recoup and formulate a game plan, she decides to visit her notoriously wise grandmother. But once
there, a curveball in the form of a deliciously attractive stranger has her falling again.

Brooks is another story altogether. He is quite content with his life until his father forces him into a
business decision that will ruin the rest of his life. As if his relationship with his father isn’t tumultuous
enough, his new fiancé is making every waking moment a living hell and loving every manipulative
minute of it.

When Laura stumbles upon her mother’s old journal, she opens a door into a long forgotten past. A
past that somehow leads both Laura and Brooks into unfamiliar territory and changes everything they
ever knew about fate.

Destiny is ever-changing, after all.

***********************************

Excerpt - Brooks' POV

I never would have pegged Laura as the type of person that would get sheer enjoyment from holding me as her naked hostage. Quickly wading over to the bank, I grab my rumpled boxers and step into them—with my back to Laura, just in case—forcing myself to suppress the images of her staring at my backside. I must also mention that having an undergarment caked with wet sand on the inside is quite an undesirable feeling. At first, I don't know how to react to such an interesting turn of events, but I currently have only one reaction in mind . . . revenge.

Watching her walk ahead of me, I notice that her drenched khaki shorts and thin lavender t-shirt are clinging to her skin in a glorious way, accentuating her tapered waist and curvy hips. Her dripping hair is hanging in disheveled chestnut waves down to her midriff, and she doesn't seem at all concerned that her tresses are out of place. I love that about a woman. But more importantly, her unwavering confidence and witty charm are driving me wild.

After my strategy for vengeance is swiftly calculated, I execute my stealthy, surprise attack.  Sneaking up behind her, I scoop her into my arms and bound back into the water, taking her under with me. Shockingly, she doesn't go down without a fight, and we wrestle and splash until we both collapse onto the soft sand.

Rolling over on my right side to face her, I have to stifle a gasp because the tousled look that she sported earlier is much more prominent now: not even a trace of makeup, wild hair, and tiny water droplets clinging desperately to every visible inch of her light bronze skin. I have never seen a woman more stunning.

As fate would have it, I spot a minuscule white seashell in her hair next to her eye, so I inch closer. "Hold still," I say as I free her hair of the tiny hitchhiker.

Her glistening emerald eyes watch me intently—a look that I could only describe as adoration. No one has ever looked at me that way; no one has ever made me feel this way. Overcome with a desire to touch her, I take her hand and place it on my chest. That one simple touch is all it takes to send me into overdrive. My heart is about to explode from my chest, I don't feel like I can catch my breath, and I have fire coursing through my veins. I have always heard people describe "love" in this same manner, but is that even possible? As soon as that thought crosses my mind, my soaring exhilaration crashes and burns.

What am I doing?

About Tasha
Tasha Ivey is a literature fanatic, whose love for the written word fostered her development into the writer she has become. A lover of an extremely erratic mixture of literature, she has been influenced by authors from Jane Austen and E.M. Forster to Charlaine Harris and Alyson Noel. But her biggest influence and literary hero? Nicholas Sparks. Aside from writing, since she doesn’t have anything other than a shriveled up prune on the left side of her brain, she prefers to spend her time being creative in other ways like painting, cake decorating, and various types of crafts. That is, if the constant voices streaming through her head allow her to stop making up stories for a while. Lucky for her, she has a huge supportive family, including her amazing husband and two kids, who doesn’t complain too much when she hangs out with her characters more than she does with them. She is currently working on her second novel, Every Breath, which is due to release this year, and she also plans to start a sequel to her first novel, Destiny Ever-changing, this summer.
