Finding Lily by Lisa D. Ellis
January 22, 2013
Soul Mate Publishing

Synopsis:

Sometimes the ties that bind people together can also tear them apart. In FINDING LILY, first-time novelist Lisa D. Ellis explores that delicate balance that exists in all relationships and tries to find meaning in a world that is sometimes kind and sometimes harsh.
Her narrator Claire, who is reeling after the unexpected loss of a newborn baby Lily, walks the fine line between love, loss, heartache and healing. Unable to cope with her grief, which seems magnified by her husband Jim’s colder coping style, Claire leaves Jim behind and runs away to live in a lighthouse she had fallen in love with as a child.
At first all Claire wants is an escape but slowly, the lighthouse sheds new light on her situation and helps her reimagine her life in a new way, sometimes with her feet on the ground and sometimes lifting up beyond the boundaries of reality to help her reconnect with Lily. Claire’s memorable journey to the lighthouse — and back again — is a story of hope and of possibility.
Readers will fall in love with Claire and with the rich images and rhythmic tones that Ellis masterfully weaves from the very first page through to the satisfying conclusion of FINDING LILY.

My Review

Finding Lily is a tender and touching journey through a young woman's grief following the loss of her child.

Claire and Jim had been envisioning a happy and fulfilling future with their daughter. Instead, they are drowning in their grief. This puts a strain on their relationship, particularly as Claire feels Jim isn't grieving along with her. So she escapes to the lighthouse in an attempt to put her life back in order.

The lighthouse is a character in its own right in this story. Claire grew up visiting the lighthouse and its beach every summer. The lighthouse has played an important role in her life, so it seems fitting she stay there while working through her grief. The lighthouse seems to have a history is saving people. And it's here that Claire is able to see things in a new light and fight through the emotions that have been immobilizing her.

Finding Lily is an emotional read. As a mother, this story felt very realistic. I sympathized with Claire in her struggle to deal with Lily's death. I think Ms. Ellis was true to the plight parents would face with the loss of a child. I loved Claire's narration, loved getting to know her and Jim, and traveling the emotional ups and downs with her. In the end, Claire's story left me hopeful and very satisfied.

Summary from Goodreads:

Bryn McCaskey is young, naïve, and can talk to ghosts. Like her mother and grandmother, Bryn is part of a breed of witches called The Keepers of the Lost Souls, whose main purpose is to guard those spirits which are permanently or temporarily grounded in the world of the living.

Because Bryn is a witch, she’s fairly comfortable dealing with all sorts of threats, which she does with ease and confidence. Handling supernatural creatures is as easy to her as baking a pie. Dealing with people however, is something she is yet to learn how to handle.

Unfortunately, as her 18th birthday approaches, and the time for her to take on her first assignment finally arrives, Bryn is forced to confront her inability to communicate with others in an effort to save the one soul that can mean the difference between life and death for mankind.

Johnny Shaw is a lost soul with a personal vendetta against witches. A vendetta he has carried on even after death. However, as much as he might hate them, in order to stop a century old threat, he must join forces with one. When fate brings them together, not only will they be forced to learn how to work as a team, but they will have to depend on each other to stop an evil witch carrying a six hundred year grudge.

About the Author

I’ve always had a passion for writing but never had the opportunity do so until now. After trying out numerous options I realized that writing was what I loved the most so when I found myself with some free time on my hands, I decided to give it a shot. As it turned out, my very active imagination helped me achieve my goals of creating believable plots with some ordinary, and some not so ordinary characters that helped the stories move along in one way or another.

As I keep moving along in achieving my dreams of becoming a published author, I divide my time in between my four children and my very understanding husband.

My Reviews

Boyfriend From Hell
Boyfriend From Hell was a fun read! It does feature a little darkness...Satan does make an appearance, after all. ;) But I enjoyed the story and getting to know all the characters.

Megan Barnett has a pretty sweet life. She has an awesome mom, great best friends, and a hot new guy just joined her mathlete team. But things begin to change the day her mom decides she'd like to have a boyfriend. Wait. What? Megan doesn't even have a boyfriend.

So, as Megan's mom, Suze, embarks on her quest to get a date, Megan has to deal with her feelings about this. Particularly once she becomes suspicious of the man wanting to date her mom. Suze thinks he's great, but Megan thinks he just might be from Hell.

I found Boyfriend From Hell very engaging, well written, with nicely developed characters. It was very engaging with its realistic portrayal of teenage life with art and the supernatural woven in. I liked how Megan grew over the course of the book. She realizes what's important and I appreciated that. I also enjoyed the snarky humor. The friendships in the story were well defined too. Y'all know I love a great supporting cast and this book has one! I LOVED Matt! I know...but I did.

The mystery also kept me engaged. Overall, this was a very entertaining YA book.

Earth Angel
Oh my! Earth Angel is even better! It picks up where Boyfriend From Hell ended and doesn't slow down!

Megan, having dealt with the aftermath of defeating Satan, is trying to put her life back to normal. However, Erin is not speaking to her. And although Guy has declared his love, he reveals a secret that could destroy their budding relationship. And, as if that wasn't enough, Megan must also deal with the fact that she's being stalked...by a demon!

Earth Angel is a richer experience. We get to know the characters in depth and it is very rewarding. Mr. Lowe's paints the characters as much more complex in this installment. And that, coupled with the action of the story, made for a more satisfying read. Megan learns more about herself and about true friendship and loyalty. I also love that she attacks problems so logically - like a true mathematician. :)

Earth Angel is equally as tense and action-packed as Boyfriend From Hell, as Megan and her cohorts must figure out a way to deal with the demon stalker. And they must also deal with plain old high school drama.

Again, I liked the combination of realistic high school issues intertwined with the paranormal. Fallen angels, Nephilim, demons, plus the poplarati all combine for a great read.

Earth Angel was a deeper story and I think even more enjoyable. I'm anxious to read the conclusion to this series!

About E. Van Lowe

E Van Lowe was born in the Bronx a long time ago, back in the days when children were supposed to be seen and not heard. Fortunately for E, his parents allowed him to speak freely. Unfortunately for his parents and older brother, E had a lot to say. He was speaking quite freely until one day, while his mother was trying to watch her “stories” (which is code for soap operas), she suggested that instead of speaking freely, he write all his important thoughts down. E wrote down many important thoughts, such as: crayons melt when you leave them on the radiator, or toy soldiers melt when you drop them in the muffin batter before mom puts it in the oven. His brother thought he was weird, but E was only ten years old at the time. What did he expect, Shakespeare? E liked writing things down so much, he decided that when he grew up, he was going to become a professional writer.

E has gone on to write for many award winning TV shows including: The Cosby Show, and Even Stevens. He also co-wrote the Academy Award nominated short film, Cadillac Dreams. Never Slow Dance With A Zombie was his first teen novel.  Boyfriend From Hell is the first in the Falling Angels Saga.  The second novel in the saga, Earth Angel, will be coming out soon.  It seems E still has lots of important, and weird, thoughts to share with readers.

Especially now that her ex is back in town with his new woman, demanding custody of McKenna's favorite creature in the whole world--her dog. No effing way. McKenna's had enough of him, and she decides to even the score by finding her own hot young thing -- a Trophy Husband. Excerpt

I start the Craiglist search with the Personals section and type “trophy husband” into the search bar. I tap open the first entry.
Extreme satisfacktion for the rite woman. Hansome male seek to belong to the woman who need to have nothing but the finest at her cummand. If your fantasy is to be in the company of a beeuutiful, intelligent and discrete, sexy man than you is getting warmer.
Our public education system is much worse than I thought. After all, is it really that much to ask for one’s potential next mate to be able to make a noun and verb agree? The answer, evidently, is yes. I try the next entry.
“Let me be your boy toy. I will obey your every order and serve your every wish.”
At least his grammar is correct. And his writing has a nice rhythm to it, so I click through to his photo.
Ouch.
I am just going to pretend I didn’t see that.
I squeeze my eyes shut. I remind myself that I am not a prude. I am not a priss. I am not weirded out by sex, or sexy people, or public displays of affection. But I am pretty sure – and I wouldn’t have known this before because I have never seen one – that I am not into penis piercings.
So I move on to the next entry, trying my best to un-see what I just saw.
“I have a job, my own place in the city and am clean and well-kept,” the next one writes.
What, like a lawn?
I hit the home button on the browser, returning to the safe haven of Google, then lay my cheek on the edge of my desk, wondering yet again if I am out of my mind? Because clearly I am not cut out for a Craigslist match. As much as I’d love to end my streak, I also wouldn’t mind a bit more than a fling. I’m almost embarrassed to admit this because I’m supposed to be an independent woman – hear me roar – but I would really like to have a boyfriend.
The word sounds so high school, but I don’t care. I don’t want to be alone any longer. I want to be in love and carefree and have someone to talk to, laugh with, make fun of other crazy people in San Francisco with. Someone who would never even think of leaving me with two mixers and a vintage white dress.
I can picture it perfectly – a night out on the town, then we’d come home, turn on some torch music, he’d take me in his arms for a slow dance. Touch my hair in a way that sends sparks through me. Then a hand on the back of my neck, bringing me closer, lips meshing with mine. He’d slide his hand down to the small of my back, while laying a smoldering path of kisses down to the hollow of my throat.
We’d slow dance and sway, the kind of dance that’s not for anyone else to see. The kind that’s a delicious tease of foreplay, where every subtle move, every brush of the fingers, and dusting of the lips on shoulders, is the promise of what’s to come. That dress straps will be pushed down, that zippers will come undone. Clothes will fall in the floor in a heap, tugged off quickly, as the dance moves to the couch and shifts into something horizontal. Slow and tender and tantalizing, each move, each touch turning me higher, sending me further into a dizzying state of longing.
My breath catches at the thought. Not only the prospect of kisses that ignite goosebumps all over me, but the possibility of someone who wants only me. Who only has eyes for me. Who wants to look at me, longing and lust in his perfect green eyes, and then throw me down on my couch, strip me naked, and bury his face between my legs.
Okay, so evidently, I both want a boyfriend and the kind of oral plundering that makes you quiver, and roll your eyes in the back of your head, and grab the guy’s soft, shaggy hair, and shout his name over and over into oblivion.
Then curl up in his arms, safe and warm, and know he’ll be there the next day and the next and even then some
Is that so much to ask for?
Love, and a talented mouth?

My Review

This prequel novella is an excellent introduction to Ms. Ellisson's V V Inn series. It provides a lot of the back story and important details leading up to the start of the series. And let me tell you, I was hooked from the first page!

In Death's Servant, we are introduced to Jon, Dria, and Rafe, the main characters of the V V Inn books. Jon is a relatively new werewolf, having been turned in the last couple of years. Since he's an alpha, he was having problems in his adoptive pack, so he left. He returns to Virginia, his home state, and it's there he discovers a group of vampires who are abusing the local werewolf pack. In order to help, he got in search of a vampire who can assist him. He meets Dria, a vampire, and her husband, Rafe. The three band together top stop the "bad" vampires.

Getting to know Jon and how he became bound to a vampire, literally Death's servant, was fascinating. Watching his struggle with his alpha tendencies, his emotional reactions and his inner turmoil towards Dria made for an exciting read.

I adore this book! I love Ms. Ellisson's writing. It sucked me in with it's charm. This little story packs quite a wallop! It was exciting, and action-y, suspenseful, philosophical, heartwarming and humorous. I laughed quite a bit but this story is actually more serious than I was expecting. I can't wait to read the first full book in the series!

Favorite Quotes:

"Looks like I'm headed to Washington DC to find me a bloodsucker. The irony of such a statement regarding a town full of politicians is not lost on me."  -Jon
"'Being an alpha means I don't get to wear blinders when times are tough, right?'
'Yes, Jon'
'Well then, it's about time I face the world with my eyes wide open.'"  -Jon and Dria
"Peace courses through me and I realize I'd follow this woman into the gates of Hell itself. And fight with every ounce of strength and cunning in me to bring us back alive."  -Jon

EXCERPT

Antoine's camera is on Ronin's left, so Ronin's left hand begins to caress my foot with small circles, a touch so light it actually makes me squirm because my feet are totally ticklish. He takes the hint and slowly sweeps up my calf, which is just about the most sensual feeling I've ever experienced. I moan out a little and his bruising kisses are back, crushing against my mouth.

Just as Antoine takes his attention to our lips Ronin's right hand also begins at my foot, swirling his fingertips around the soft pad of my arch. I laugh into his mouth and he pulls me close, my hair hiding our faces for a moment, and says, "Shhhh, now. Be good, Gidge." And then his right hand sweeps up my leg and under my dress, caressing the same small circles along my inner thigh.

"Oh, shit," I whimper as I bury myself in his neck. Just a few more inches and I'm going to come undone. My neck tilts back as the sensations all crash together and he takes his kisses to my plunging neckline, his left hand, the one still out in the open, slips up to my breast just as the hidden hand drops down a little farther, just a flutter of a touch against my crease.

He reaches over, not with the hidden hand, and picks up a glass of wine and hands it to me.

My fingertips barely understand what to do with the glass because the only thing on my mind is where his other hand is. We each take a sip and then he bites into a cherry, taking half of it in his mouth, and spits out the pit.

Antoine barks something harsh in French and Ronin laughs. "It's a fucking pit, Antoine, it's not litter." He rolls his eyes at me. "Sit still now, Rook, and keep your mouth closed for a moment."

My mind is still on his fingers as they caress my inner thigh, but I do my best not to squirm.

He brings the cherry to my lips and I keep my mouth closed. This makes him smile and then he traces my lips, dripping juice as he paints them. I'm just about to let my tongue dart out and get the juice when Ronin's mouth reaches up and licks it off, stopping to suck on my bottom lip, and then gives it a little nibble that makes me cry out.

He bites into another cherry and again, to Antoine's disgust, woofs out the pit into the grass. Spitting is a skill only boys really acquire. They are so good at it. It might gross out Antoine, but not me. I think just about everything Ronin is doing with his mouth is astonishing right now. The secret hand under my dress appears again. He lifts my left hand and paints each fingertip pad with cherry juice, then sucks it off, nibbling them one by one, just like he did my lips.

I just stare at him and his eyes never leave mine. "What?" he finally asks.

"You—" I say.

He raises his eyebrows.

"—are bad."

He laughs. "If you were naked right now I'd drip this juice all down your belly and let my tongue—"

"OK, that's enough," Antoine says. "Excellent job, Rook."

Fucking Antoine.

I bite my lip as Ronin licks my fingertips one more time and then grins up at me like an idiot. "Want to come over and watch a movie, Gidget?"

I nod enthusiastically as Elise helps me up, and then Ronin bounces to his feet and puts his arm around me protectively. "You fell asleep pretty quick last time, are you sure you're up for a movie?"

I'm not sure if a movie is the code word for sex or not right now, but either way, I'm definitely up for it.
