**Review & Author Interview ~ Lightpoints ~ Peter Kassan**

Lightpoints
Title: Lightpoints
Author: Peter Kassan
Release Date: March 24, 2013
Source: I received an ecopy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Synopsis:
What if you suddenly discovered you had a sense-and powers-that almost no one else in the world did? When Amanda Lindner Nichols, a 24-year-old graphic artist living with her husband in Queens, New York, is revived from a near-death experience, she discovers she perceives everyone around her as points of light-but not with her eyes. She soon learns she can not only perceive the life energy of others, but she can give and take it. With the help of others like her, she brings her husband Chris to the brink of death and back to bestow on him the same remarkable faculty, and they're the happiest they've been. But not for long. All over the world, people who've been revived from their own near-death experience at just the right moment discover themselves with these same unusual powers. They find ways to use them-some for good and some for evil. When Amanda and Chris encounter a ruthless group of gangsters with the same faculty, tragedy follows-and Amanda faces the greatest challenge of her life.

Lightpoints is an intriguing look at how differently people react to, view and use a 'talent' given to them following a Near Death Experience (NDE). The majority of the cast of characters has experienced an NDE, and an Out-of-Body Experience as well. Once revived, they can perceive, or 'sense' the energy, or lightpoints, of everyone around them. As this sense is explored, they discover they can also give and take energy.

Mr. Kassan spins many threads in this story, but not all are woven together. We are introduced to several characters and groups of characters who have the sense. I can only surmise these characters' significance was to reinforce the differences in how people of varying circumstances, be it social, religious, etc., handle having this ability. Of course, Mr. Kassan may also intend on giving these characters their own stories - I rather hope he does. However, Lightpoints revolves mainly around Amanda Nichols and her husband, Chris, and Carlos Herrera. It is through the telling and the intersecting of their stories that Mr. Kassan illustrates the disparity between humans with this ability.

The sense, as I said, is the ability to perceive the energy emitted by a human. Through this sense, a person can identify much about other people, such as whether a person is cheerful or agitated. Once the sense is honed, they can even sense a person's nature. It seems as though a person's use of their sense is dependent upon their moral compass. Amanda, for instance, explores her sense gradually, and uses it to accomplish good. Carlos Herrera, on the other hand, only seeks ways to use it for personal gain.

Amanda is an incredibly strong and resilient young woman. It was fascinating to watch as she navigated life with her new sense. It was also fulfilling to see she and Chris connect on a completely different level, once they both are sensitives. She had begun to withdraw from him and couldn't share her new ability. However, things decline rapidly when Herrera finds them. He's out to collect sensitives, trying to create a way to use the sense against his enemies.

Lightpoints is a very cerebral read. There is some action and suspense, especially towards the end, but it's not a book that had my heart pounding. However, I was so intrigued by the notion of this sense and the power it encompassed, I was captivated. Lightpoints is very well written and beautifully rendered. My only real concerns are that I would have liked to have had the multiple threads woven together, and although I understand Amanda's actions at the end of the book, I felt her actions didn't quite mesh with her nature. Perhaps Mr. Kassan was making the point that despite being a good person, one never knows what they're capable of until tested by dire circumstances.

As I'm writing this review, I continue to wonder about Amanda, Lisa and the support group, as well as other characters introduced. I do hope this isn't the end of the line. If it is, Mr. Kassan has certainly provided an interesting topic to ponder.

Hi, Peter, and welcome to my blog. Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and chat with me!

Can you tell us a little about yourself? (like why you'd leave the exciting world of technical writing?!?)

I’ve always been interested in both the worlds of art and the world of science and mathematics. As a child, I wrote poetry and I studied acting, but I also subscribed to Scientific American and was obsessed with cryptography and number systems. I went to New York’s School of Performing Arts (that’s the one in the movie Fame) as a drama major, but in college I majored in math and took a lot of psych courses. When I graduated, I needed to earn a living
while I wrote the next Great American Novel (which, I’m now relieved to say, was never published), so I got a job as a computer programmer. It was a natural progression to combine my interests in writing and computers to become a technical writer. That led to a long career as an executive in the software products field.

Why are readers going to love Lightpoints?

Lightpoints imagines experiences no one has ever had and makes you believe they’re completely real. It’s very sensual.

Can you tell us about any research you did for the novel? Do you know anyone who has had a Near Death Experience? Have you studied art or did you do some research to be able to describe Chris' paintings?

I’ve long been interested in various aspects of psychology, including consciousness, near-death, and out-of-body experiences. I just did some quick online research as I was writing to refresh my memory on the usual elements of such experiences and their sequence. Regarding Chris’s paintings: again, I’ve long been interested in fine art (although I’ve never tried painting myself). I made it all up, and then I asked a friend who’s a trained artist to read it over. To my surprise, he told me not to change anything.

Is there a particular scene that you enjoyed writing? Or a scene that was difficult to write?

Writing about John and Lisa looking at Chris’s painting with him and Amanda was especially fun, because there were many layers to make real. First, how could I describe a sense that’s completely fictitious and no one has at all? Then there was Chris as an artist trying to conceive of making visual something that isn’t actually visualizable. Then Chris describes how he executed the paintings—I loved making that up, and it was very gratifying when my friend told me I had gotten it right. And then describing each of the character’s reactions to the paintings.

I also especially enjoyed writing the scenes of various people around the world with the sense using it in different ways. When I imagined this new faculty, I realized that people would react to discovering themselves with it would incorporate it into their lives in different ways, depending on their personalities and circumstances and beliefs. I wanted to show that the story I was telling—about a young American woman with the sense—was only one of many. Some readers loved these independent storylines, but others were disappointed that only one ended up converging with Amanda’s. But, really, if the sense I imagined was as rare as I described, how would everyone with it all over the world even know about each other, much less all come together at the end?

The climax was difficult. In this kind of novel, it’s pretty much a requirement that you put the protagonist into an impossible situation and then get her out of it. After drafting that scene, I had to go back to earlier scenes to make what happened at the end more plausible.

Do you have a favorite character from the book? Why?

Novelists tend to fall in love with their villains—that’s why they often avoid killing them off at the end. And I had fun with all the bad guys. But I love Amanda, my protagonist. If I didn’t love her, how could I expect readers to care about her?

Since this is your debut novel, do you have any advice to give aspiring writers?

Learn spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, and other conventions of written English. Every word, every punctuation mark matters. Pay attention to how you’re feeling about your writing: if you’re not enjoying writing it, no one will enjoy reading it. But if you’re having too much fun, you’re probably just being self-indulgent. Reread and edit your own writing again and again: no one will pay as much attention or give as much thought to your writing as you will, because no one cares as much about it as you do.  Finally, just do the work. When I was just starting to write, I put up a little sign: The elves that help the old shoemaker do not help thee.

What are you currently working on? Is there going to be a sequel to Lightpoints? (this I'd really like to know! ;)

I had gotten through about a third of a sequel to Lightpoints that continued Amanda’s story. But I wasn’t enjoying writing it (see my answer to the previous question), so I’ve put it in hold. I’ve just started working on the first installment in a projected trilogy that’s based on the same basic idea—people acquiring a new sense and new powers after they’ve had  a near-death-out-of-body experience—but taking it in a different direction. My protagonist is Alyssa (I like names that start and end with the letter A), a seventeen-year-old girl living in Topanga Canyon, California. The sense and the powers of the faculty are a little different from what I describe in
Lightpoints, and I introduce several new ideas.

Thanks again, Peter!

Combining my love of writing with my interest in computer programming, I became a technical writer for several software products companies, eventually becoming a minority shareholder and executive vice president of a small, privately held company. There, I wrote and managed the writing of everything from software design documents to marketing literature. Twenty-five years later, after it was sold to a large computer company with a three letter name, I became one of those celebrated risk-takers we’ve heard so much about. I started a company based on what I thought was a bright idea of mine. Within a couple of years, I’d crashed and burned, and discovered myself in financial ruin and without a job. Trying to find a job in my industry or to establish a consulting practice, I learned it was no industry for old men. Mostly to keep myself sane, I decided to write a novel based on the germ of an idea I’d had in my twenties. That became Lightpoints.

Oh, and along the way, I met the woman who would become my wife, married her, raised two children, and housed as many as five cats at a time. My wife and I now live in Connecticut. We’re down to only three cats.

Ruin by C.J. Scott
(A Summer in Winter Novel 1)
Publication date: August 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
Kate Bell isn’t perfect. Not even close. The things she got up to in college would cause her parents to fall off their pedestals in shock. Home for the summer vacation, Kate settles in for a long, boring break in the tiny backwater of Winter with folks who still treat her like she’s twelve.

Then Ben Parker arrives and suddenly Winter gets interesting. He’s hot, mysterious and good with his hands. Kate falls for him instantly, but her cop father warns her to stay away. But how can she stay away from someone as compelling as Ben? Someone who thinks she’s perfect just the way she is?

When Ben’s secrets catch up to him, not only is Kate’s heart in danger of being broken, but Ben’s entire future could be ruined.

"So Ben Parker, if I want you and you want me...what's the problem?"
"You don't like to beat around the bush, do you?"
"We don't have time for that. We only have one night."
"Yeah," he said softly. "Don't I know it."
I turned so that I was fully facing him, one elbow on the railing. "Is that why you're reluctant? Because you're leaving tomorrow?"
"No. Yes. Partly." He shook his head. "It's complicated. I'm complicated."
"You're a guy. You can't be too complicated." I smiled and he smiled back sadly. "I'm listening if you want to explain all your complications to me."
He shook his head. "I can't."
"Look," I said. "I get that stuff has happened in your past that you want to forget."
He straightened. "What makes you think that?"
"You're traveling around the country with only one bag and no money. Not only that, but you got off the bus in a place with no jobs. If I wasn't mistaken, I'd say you're trying to lose yourself."
He leaned on the railing again, his hands dangling over into nothing. He looked out to the garden, but it had grown darker in the last few minutes, and it was difficult to make out more than just shapes. "You'll make a great criminologist, Kate. I have no doubt you'll go far in whatever you decide to do."
"Thanks. That's very sweet of you. But it has nothing to do with the question at hand."
"The question?"
I leaned over until my lips were near his ear. My breath fanned his hair. "Will you kiss me, Ben?" It was the wine talking. It had to be. I'd never been so brazen with any man before. I never made the first move, never took a chance on being rejected.
But I knew Ben wanted me. I just didn't know why he pushed me away.

Unstoppable (Book #2 in the Fierce Trilogy)
Author: Ginger Voight
Release date: August 20, 2013

Book Summary:
His eyes were rimmed red when they met mine. "I die inside every time he touches you, and there's nothing I can do about it. You've made it clear that you're going to go on with this sham of a marriage, no matter who it hurts in the process. You lie to everyone, Jordi, including the people you're supposed to love the most. And I just can't take it anymore. This is not the way I want to live my life."

"I thought I was worth it," I mumbled.

"You have no idea what you're worth," he said softly. "That's the problem."

In book #2 of the Fierce saga, Jordi Hemphill has joined her true love Jace Riga on cross-country tour with Giovanni Carnevale and Dreaming in Blue. The star-crossed lovers anticipate the freedom to explore their burgeoning relationship, despite the continued complications of her ties to her tormentor Eddie Nix and Jace's new standing as a rock icon. Nothing is as it seems, which make the pair fodder for the rumor mill. Forces from all directions threaten to tear them apart, but it is Jordi's own insecurities that drive a wedge between the aspiring diva and her hero.

Author Ginger Voight further delves into the key issues that keep Jordi from defeating her demons once and for all. This sweeping saga unearths revelations that will rock Jordi's world forever... and set her on the path to the path to her story's epic conclusion.

If you haven't yet started this trilogy, Ginger is offering Fierce and Unstoppable bundled together for only $4.99.

My Review

In Unstoppable, Ginger Voight really turns up the angst! Between a narcissistic butthead of a husband, social media woes, lies, secrets, and more lies, it seems the world is conspiring against Jordi.

Unstoppable begins with Jordi and Jace preparing for the four month long tour with Vanni's band, Dreaming in Blue. Things seem to be looking up for Jordi. However, Jordi and Jace's relationship is still on the down-low until Jordi can divest herself of her worthless husband, and the possibility of a scandal with its potential effects on Jace, Vanni and Graham.

Over the course of the tour, things get very tense between the Fierce stars. Eddie makes is presence felt by all. Jace spends much of his time with Shelby, who is carrying a torch for him. This, along with Eddie's treatment of her, and the media and audience's demeaning of her does nothing good for Jordi's tenuous self esteem.

Jordi does everything she can to protect everyone but herself. Unfortunately, those around her still hurt. Some of the decisions and self-defeating actions Jordi makes drove me bat-shit crazy! But I reminded myself that this is Jordi - she's only 19, and her self esteem is usually scraping the ground. She's making the best decisions she's capable of.

Thank goodness she has Jace, Vanni and Andy, and Graham and Maggie. Although things are strained with Jace, Vanni and Andy, stand by her side. I didn't know it was possible to love or think more highly of Vanni, but he proves himself more and more worthy of my high esteem. He takes Jordi under his wing and is the big brother caretaker she so desperately needs. Maggie, who helps Jordi with her physical therapy after Jordi suffers a back injury and who acts as her dietitian, along with Graham have become Jordi's surrogate parents. Iris also makes an appearance as Jordi's publicist and helps Jordi navigate the waters of her new-found fame. Even Yael and Felix offer their brand of encouragement. I delighted in seeing all these characters I've grown to love.

In Unstoppable, Jordi finds herself on the brink of failure in so many areas. With the help of her friends, and especially Jace, she pulls herself back. However, Jordi is faced with the realization that there are things she needs to work through in order to move forward. The revelation at the end of the book had me gasping and at the same time, thinking things made a little more sense.

I'm anxious to read Epic, the conclusion to the Fierce trilogy. I'm really anticipating seeing Jordi grow and mature emotionally. And with Jace by her side, along with her new 'family', it looks like our girl will be unstoppable. :)

Excerpt

Vanni stood tall and imposing in the door frame. “If you’re going to keep skipping the encore, you’re going to need a doctor’s note,” he teased as he leaned up against the door frame.

“I’m sorry,” I started but he held up a hand.

“You don’t have to explain,” he said. “You just have to come with me.”

I shook my head but he wasn’t having it. He pulled me from the room and led me toward the elevator, ultimately to a car out front.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Home,” he said simply.

He took me back to the Brooklyn brownstone. Before we exited the car he handed the driver a hundred dollar bill and my hotel key card. “Bring her stuff,” he instructed before pulling me from the car and leading me up the steps.

“This is a little inappropriate, don’t you think?” I asked as I scanned the darkened street for PING reporters.

“Like I give a shit,” he said as he pushed open the door. He stared down at me with those deep, almost hypnotic eyes. “Inside, young lady.” I didn’t argue. I followed him into the living room like a good little girl.

“I don’t know what’s going on with you, Jordi,” he said as he pulled me down onto the couch beside him. “But I do know it won’t get any better if you’re left alone to lick your wounds. You’re staying with me the rest of the trip.”

“But Andy…”

“Already knows,” he filled in. “It was her idea.”

“But PING…”

“Is irrelevant,” he said, echoing what Jace had said. “Your problem is you’re worried way too much about how things look to people who simply don’t give a damn. They need you to fail. They need you to do something they can criticize. They are always going to find something wrong with what you do or say.”

He took my chin in his hand. “F#ck ‘em.”

It was such a Jace thing to say tears immediately sprang into my eyes. He pulled me into his arms and held me there, which caused the dam to break. He rocked me gently as he stroked my hair. “My poor, miserable Jordi,” he crooned. “How long are you going to carry your pain? There’s no shame in letting it hurt. But eventually you have to let it go or it’ll kill you.”

He held me until I soaked his shirt, his hair fanning around my face like a halo. I was mortified by my behavior, but when he tipped my chin so I could look at him, all I could see was total acceptance. It was like Jace, or Corey, or even my Dad.

He bent to kiss me slightly on the cheek. “Do you know how loved you are?” he asked. I shook my head.

No, I didn’t know. I don’t think I ever did. “Well, you are,” he assured. “I love you. Andy loves you. Even Renata and Grandma Lydia love you,” he added with a grin that made me laugh. “Everyone on tour loves you,” he continued. Then, finally, “Jace loves you.”

I shook my head. “I just make him miserable. Shelby’s a better fit,” I muttered. “They’re the perfect couple.”

“Don’t tell me that you’ve bought into the press about that.”

I shrugged. “It’s not press. I walked in on them in Philadelphia. They were in his dressing room and he was massaging her leg.”

“And why would that matter to a happily married woman?” he wanted to know as he brushed some hair away from my eyes.

I wondered what Vanni would do if I told him the truth. What could he do? What could anyone do? I was stuck and I knew it. I turned away from those all-seeing brown eyes. “It doesn’t matter,” I found myself repeating, as if I said it enough it would actually be true.

He pulled me from the sofa and sat me at his piano. His fingers danced along the keys, as if trying to find a melody. I watched him as he closed his eyes. Each note he played traipsed across his face until finally he found what he was looking for.

“She doesn’t know,” he sang. “She can’t believe… she’d find the person that would never leave.” He turned his head slightly to look at me. “She hangs onto the past and every ghost, all lies that hide who loves her most. She’s beautiful but she can’t see just how perfect she is to me.”

I placed my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes. Even after all these years, Vanni Carnevale was my guardian angel, throwing me a life line with that amazing voice.

Ginger Voight is prolific author, freelance writer and optioned screenwriter. Her fiction is diverse, with novels like the edgy, coming-of-age drama DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS, and the fun family adventure for kids of all ages, COMIC SQUAD.

Having grown up reading different authors like Danielle Steel and Stephen King, Ginger has always been drawn more to story than to genre. This shows up in her various stories. Titles such as MY
IMMORTAL and TASTE OF BLOOD are a delicious, heady mix of horror, suspense, and romance.Genre romance, however, has held a special place in her heart, ever since she read her first Harlequin novel when she was only eleven. As a result, Ginger is making a name for herself writing romances of her own, starring women who look more like the average American woman rather than those traditionally represented in the size-biased American media. Her Rubenesque romances were created especially for those heroines with fuller figures, who can still get the man of their dreams if only they believe they can. Such titles include UNDER TEXAS SKIES, LOVE PLUS ONE, THE GROUPIE TRILOGY,
FIERCE and PICTURE POSTCARDS.

Excerpt

“Are you okay?”

I sat on the cold tile floor of the break room with my head between my grease stained knees. The last person I expected to come back and check on me was Kai. In my frenzied cry I somehow managed to blurt out that I female problems and that got Jason to find someone else to do the sweeping. No guy ever wants to fight that one and Jason’s face turned red when I mentioned it.

“I’m fine." I sniffled, hoping that Kai would just go away. I wanted to be alone. How could my friends have done this to me? It was bad enough that I already lost my house, my school, and now some of my best friends since grade school. To top it all off I had some kid with hot pink shoes acting like I was the one with issues.

“Well obviously you’re not." He reached his hand out toward me.

I crossed my arms firmly over my chest. “I don’t need your help." It came out whinier than I intended. Instead of walking away, he just plopped down beside me and spread his long legs out next to mine.

“You can only try and make lemons into lemonade for so long before you just have to say, screw the lemons, and bail." He stretched his arms out over his head.

I couldn’t help but smile. “I didn’t think anyone but me actually used that expression.”

“Well looks like you were wrong." He slowly stood up and turned to face me. “Now c’mon and let me show you what else you’re wrong about.”

As I looked at him, I didn’t know what came over me. Maybe it was just my girl emotions working overtime or maybe it was his pleading puppy dog eyes, but for some reason I took his hand and followed him out the back door.

“So where are we going?" I questioned, letting go of his hand as soon as we got outside. I was really glad we exited out the back so no one saw us. I really didn’t want people getting the wrong idea. Kai was a nice guy and everything, but I knew the other co-workers would have a field day if they saw us together. Luckily it was just my little red mini and a giant orange car in the parking lot.

“Just get in and you’ll find out," He said conspiratorially and opened the passenger door of the giant orange thing.

“What is that?" I pointed at the car, tilting my head.

“This would be my car, a Ford Falcon." He motioned again for me to get into the car. Slowly I approached the car and got in as he slid over the hood of the car to the driver’s side.

“Isn’t that like something out of Star Wars?" I asked as he got in and started the car.

“No, that would be the Millennium Falcon, and that would be Star Trek." He smiled and pulled out of the parking lot.

“Sorry, I’m not up on my geekery." I laughed and I held out my palms toward him.

“It’s okay I didn’t really expect you to be." He slid his long fingers over toward me. I thought he was going to reach for my hand but instead he turned on the stereo, letting a loud screaming guy’s voice blast over the speakers.

“Ugh!" I put my hands over my ears and screeched, “What is that?”

Kai sighed and turned down the music. “It’s the Circle Jerks, you know Punk Rock.”

I shook my head. “Never heard of them, maybe you have something else that I might like."

I reached up into the CD visor and browsed through his CD’s. Bad Religion, The Misfits, Dead Kennedys —All these bands I had never heard of and sounded really depressing.

“How about we just turn on the radio?”

“You’re kind of demanding you know that?" Kai looked at me out of the corner of his eye and leaned back in his seat.

“Gee, you’re such a charmer," I mocked. “But seriously, where are we going anyway?”

“It’s a surprise,” he said mischievously, smiling as he turned down State Street.

“Okay," I said and pulled my uniform top over my head.

“JESUS, what are you doing?" Kai swerved the car and almost hit the curb in the process, causing me to almost bounce my head off the dashboard.

“Ugh!" I folded the shirt in my lap and then ran my fingers across the straps of my white tank top that I had on underneath. “I just didn’t want to show up to wherever we were going in my uniform; what did you think I was doing? Trying to strip down in the Star Trek car?”

“I don’t know." He shrugged. “I thought the Falcon had some magical powers or something.”
