That's What HE Said #78 ~ Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #72 ~ Shine ~ Dannika Dark

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies @Chapter Break. Here's the deal: every Thursday, post a line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. Keep in mind, these are direct quotes from dialog in the books. The quote doesn't have to be romantic - just something our hunky hero said to his lucky lady. Be sure to link up over at Chapter Break as well.

Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts is a weekly meme hosted by my blogger wife, Lexxie, @(un)Conventional Bookviews. It's a way to highlight a book using quotes that revolve around food or drinks. Every Thursday, post a line or two...or heck, a whole paragraph, that spoke to you in some way using food or drinks. *wink*

I cannot explain to you how much I adore Logan Cross. He's a total alpha male and so absolutely far from being an alpha-hole. If you haven't met him, you *MUST* rectify this immediately. Then come tell me how much you love him. *big grin*

***

"I will never let you go if you keep me in your heart, Little Raven. I will never leave you as long as you hear my voice whispering in your ear. No one lives forever. It's not what you take from this life--it's what you give. When it's my time--whenever that may be--I want to know that I left you with hope. You gave me that gift on the night we met, when I watched hum a song in the kitchen while heating up enchiladas for a stranger at your table. Pass it on someday to someone who needs it more than you."

I re-read Joker and Carissa's story in my quest for reading KA's books in the order she recommends. I loved them just as much as I did the first time. Maybe more. :)

***

"I don't know where this will lead," he stated. "You and me and your boy. I know what we got. I know I like what we got. I know I wanna keep that strong and make it stronger. Shit happens. I hope like fuck it happens to us, we'll fight through to the other side. But I know this and you gotta know it too. No matter what happens, I will never, not ever, not fuckin' ever, Carissa, regret ridin' down that shoulder to help you and your boy. It's the best decision I ever made in my life, and I know that in a way I know I'll feel that until the day I fuckin' die."

***

I love this exchange between Carissa and Joker. And it gave me a hankering for some chili, too. :)

"Do you like chili?"
"Yeah."
"Chili," I declared and started to grab cans of beans.
"You know, a list helps," he remarked.
"I have a mental list," I told him, tossing kidney beans in the cart and going back for black.
"Was chili on it?" he asked.
I looked at him. "Don't you want chili?"
"What I want is not to wander every aisle so we're here for an hour rather than bein' here for twenty minutes gettin' shit from a list."
"If I stick to a list, inspiration can't strike, like the fact I suddenly have a craving for chili," I told him.

He shook his head, grinning and muttering, "Whatever."
He wasn't annoyed.
He was easy.
So I turned back and grabbed black beans. Then I got some chili beans. I finished up with pinto.
Four-bean chili. The best.

Earlier this week I did some swooning over Logan Cross so I thought I'd share a little glimpse of why he's so swoon-worthy. Enjoy! *winks*

"I was made to protect you, female. I've claimed you, whether you accept it or not, and it's an honor that I take very seriously. If any male lays an unwanted finger on you, I will break it. If you hunger, I will feed you. If you're cold, then I will warm you with my body. If you're taken from me, then I'll track you. Never doubt my devotion to you." He gripped my head firmly. "I once gave a woman my heart, because that's all I had to give. But you, Silver, you're the pulse that keeps me alive. I was a soft man once, but no more. I don't know if you can accept the man that I've become, because all I have to offer you is my life..."

"I love your son. And I'll break you if you ever even look at him sideways again. Your 'not normal' son is the most talented untrained artist I've ever seen. He's intelligent, an amazing skater, has a great sense of humor and is the kindest, most humble person I've ever met. I'm so in love with him I can't even think straight. Which is fine since obviously I'm not straight. And neither is he. Anyway, I'm rambling. I do that sometimes. Hard to shut me up. The point is..."
...
"Your opinions on... everything really, are not welcome here. Michael's fine. I'm taking care of him now. Shoo."

"I got a lotta friends I watched go down for the count and stay down because they like the feel of bein' stuck. And what I mean when I say that is they went down to the women they decided to spend their lives with. Watched that, dug that for them, straight up wanted it for myself. But I know the man I am and knew what that would take for it to happen to me. And never, not once, Justice, did I ever find one I even considered havin' this conversation with so the shit I'm tellin' you, baby, you gotta know up front not to take it lightly. And I'll share what I mean by sayin' that I don't want a future with you. Where I'm at right now, after seein' those cruisers at your house, is that I can't imagine a future without you."

*~*~*~*~*~*

This particular quote resonated big with me because my Hubs used to make fried bologna sandwiches for me when we were in college. :D

It was dinnertime and I was sitting cross-legged on his couch, watching him in his tiny kitchen frying bologna and making toast.
Frying bologna and making toast.
The girls had brought huge amounts of food. So much of it, some of it was taking up what little counter space Deke had. They hadn't prepared us for a few nights hanging at Deke's trailer. They'd prepared us for a three-month-long seige.
And he was making me fried bologna on toast, the American cheese slices out and at the ready.
Just like I'd told him I liked it.

The restaurant was lit with white Christmas lights outside, and the smell of frying dough invaded the damp air.
"Whatever that smell is," Sophie said as we went inside, "that's what I'm having."
"Churros," Noah said. "It's a dessert."
Sophie tucked her short blond hair behind her ears. "I don't care. That smell is crazy."

"You're a force, Sutton. I felt it from the moment I laid eyes on you when I walked into the crisis center. You just radiate this--I don't know what to call it--but it's like a confidence I've never seen before. You love life. It's a little intimidating, but it attracts me all the same."
...
"Because you turned your life around. You had a shitty start and yet you conquered your past. You used it to give you strength and resilience, and you in turn give others strength and resilience. You make me look at things differently, and apparently I've found some joy for things that I thought were long dead and buried for me."

"But let's get some dessert first, then I'll tell you all about it."
"No, thanks," she says just before wiping her mouth and then putting her napkin on her plate.
"No, thanks?" I say with an eyebrow cocked at her. "This is Cafe Lina. They make your favorite dessert--chocolate ten-layer cake."
"I know but you're always plying me with chocolate. I'm going to look like a hippo if you don't stop."
An image comes to my mind of Sutton pregnant, her tummy round and her walk bordering on a waddle. It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and I hope she wants more than one kid. But no time to think of that now. I have to get Sutton back on track with my plans today.
"Baby," I say as I lean in close to her ear, my voice dropping low so the waitress can't hear me. "One slice of your favorite dessert in the world isn't going to kill you. Besides, I"ll help you work it off tonight. You can be on top."

Kaleidoscope by Kristen Ashley

"Emme, I'm lying in bed lookin' at your kaleidoscope sittin' on my nightstand, knowin' you've been with me every day for nine years. Which means I wanted you with me every day even when I didn't realize it. Which means you mean something to me and not a little something. You think I'd make that play tonight if I thought makin' it would fuck us up?"
...
"So, I made a decision and carried it out but I know what's at stake here and I'm gonna bust my ass to lead this careful, gentle so it doesn't get fucked up. I know this is fast, but from here we don't have to go fast. We just gotta go forward. And we gotta do it honest. So talk to me."

*~*~*~*~*~*

In this scene, Emme is making dinner for Jacob after not having seen him for quite a few years. I know there's no actual food eaten here but the scene is funny and swoony. :)

"I need to know if you don't eat anything," I lied.
Actually, it wasn't a lie. Although I remembered a lot about Jacob (most everything, in all honesty), I couldn't recall if there was something specific he didn't like to eat.
I could recall how beautiful he was, how tall he was, how strong he was. I could recall how smart he was and how funny he was. I could recall how cool he was with me. I could also recall how much I missed him. But I couldn't recall if he didn't like chicken.
But that wasn't the only think I needed to know. I needed to know something else too.
Much like last night, when he didn't make me feel like a psycho, in face, the opposite and sounded like he was happy to hear from me and would be willing to talk all night, he again sounded like my psychotically calling him yet again in a precursor to stalker way was no big deal.
"I don't eat it, I'll pick it off."
"You can't pick it off if I cook with it in it or if the mainstay of dinner on the whole is what you don't eat," I informed him.
"You makin' Indian food?" he asked.
"No. Don't you like Indian food?" I asked back.
"Love it," he answered.
'Then why'd you ask if I was making Indian food?"
"Cause I hoped you were."
I burst out laughing.
No, Jacob definitely didn't make me feel like I was being a psycho.
When I quit laughing, I told him, "Sorry, honey, I don't know how to make Indian food."
"Shame," he muttered, a smile in his deep, attractive voice, and if I was on an infrared scanner, specific parts of me would have shown up better.
...
"You haven't actually answered the question."
"I'll eat what you cook, Emme. Cook what you like."

"I love you, Luce," he continued. Clearly he wasn't going to stop until he said what he needed to. "And I'm sorry I ruined everything we had before I could admit it to you. Before I could admit it to myself. You didn't make me a better person, because no one can do that. You made me want to be a better person. You believed in me and stuck up for me. You cared for me when no one else would. You made me better, Luce. You're right---one person can make a difference. One person can change another person's whole world for the better," he said. "One person ruined my world, and that was my dad, and one person saved my world, and that was you." Raising his hands, he stroked my face. "The same tragedy ruined our families. The same tragedy brought us here today. Don't let it tear us apart."

*~*~*~*~*~*

I liked this particular scene of Lucy and her roommate, India, at a college party. Um, I'd be Lucy in this scenario. ;)

"God, I need a drink," she said, pulling me along behind her as she beelined for what I guessed was the beverage table.
"Just pour me something!" India hollered over the music at the guy manning the drink table. He made a shotgun motion with his hand before mixing something that came out looking too pink and too strong.
"Pick your poison, beautiful," he said to me after handing off India's drink.
"Got anything back there that won't make me shit-faced in two sips?" From the looks of the crowd, it was doubtful.
Another shotgun motion, and he popped open a cooler and twisted the lid off a beer.

There are so, so many wonderful things that Ren, the hero in this final installment, said. But one thing I've really enjoyed in this re-read is the family dynamics between the Nightingale's. And so I went with a quote from Lee to his little sister, Ally. They're talking about Ally's choice in careers, by the way.

"There are a million other things I'd want for you. It took me a while and Hank to lay it out, but the thing I should want most is what you want. So now I'm tellin' you, like yesterday with that ntoe, don't ever doubt it, anytime you need me, I'm there."

*~*~*~*~*~*

"You want me to make breakfast?" he asked.
Jeez.
Seriously?
This guy could also cook?
I tested the waters.
"Are we talking instant oatmeal or eggs benedict?"
That got another lip quirk before he answered.
"I was thinking croissants, eggs whatever way you want 'em, fresh strawberries, bacon and tater tots."
Did he say tater tots?
For breakfast?
"Did you say tater tots?" I asked in order to confirm.
"Baby." His hips pressed into mine. I bit my lip at how good that felt and his face dipped close. "Tater tots rock breakfast."
Ren Zano ate tater tots for breakfast and served them up to his fuck buddies.
He was a dream.
"I'm totally down for breakfast," I answered.
At that he smiled and my world ended.
Again.
Because I wanted that smile every morning right after mind-blowing sex and right before my tater tots.
And I wanted it for a lifetime.

"But then there's quite a lot you don't know about me, Mrs. Dews."
"Is there?" Her gaze skipped over his shoulder, and he knew she looked at his mother in conversation with Lady Beckinhall in the corner. "Such as?"
"I have an unnatural fondness for marzipan sweetmeats."
He felt more than heard her giggle, and the small, innocent sound sent a frisson of warmth through him. She hid her emotions so well usually, even the joyous ones.
"I haven't had marzipan sweetmeats in ages," she murmured.
He had the sudden urge to buy her a boxful just to watch her eat them. Her read lips would become sprinkled with the sugar and she'd have to lick them clean.

Harper laughed. It felt good to release some of the tension that had been building inside.
"I happen to love it, though I like black licorice better."
He pointed to the door. "That's it. Get out of my studio. Black licorice is one step from devil worship."
"Kind of extreme view, don't you think?" Holy cow, had she just heard herself giggle?

Uh-oh.
"What kind of salmon did she make?" Vance asked the wrong question, grabbing a Bavarian cream and sitting on the arm of Jules's chair.
"It was buttered and herbed and in this light as air pastry," Ava rhapsodized, even though Jules was now frantically shaking her head at Ava (who also didn't notice) and Daisy's face was getting pink. Ava went on, "And the potatoes were creamy and cheesy. Sliced so think, it was amazing."
Daisy glared at Ava, plonked down the coffee and stormed out.
"What'd I say?" Ava asked, glancing around in confusion, and Jules smiled at her and mouthed, "Later."
"Let me get this straight. Mace gets the girl who can cook?" Vance put in.

Anyone else have a favorite food that grandma makes?

Silently he snagged a small saucer from the cabinet, a spoon from the drawer, a knife from the wood block. Then he cut a large wedge out of the pie. The first bite of sweet-tart deliciousness slide down his throat, slow and easy.
Mmm, cherry! His entire body sighed.
One piece wasn't enough. He had to have two. A chug of milk washed down the third. Abandoning all etiquette, he scarfed down the rest and licked the pie pan clean. At long last, a warm, cozy satisfaction ebbed from this belly.
God, it's good to be home.

I spied the coffee ship and fairly shouted, "La-La Land!"
Tate's head turned to me. "Come again?"
"Stop. Park. Coffee. Orgasmic bread. Now," I demanded.
"Orgasmic bread?" Tate asked.
"Tate, you're passing it!" I cried desperately as we went past, my head turning to watch the shop through the window. "Park!"
Tate braked and swing into a parking spot three doors down from La-La Land. He barely had the ignition switched off before I had the door open, hopped down, slammed the door shut, and was motoring.
...
I ignored this, focused on processing my disappointment that Shambles had yet to hit on a chocolate theme at the same time surveying the case seeing lemon drizzle cake, lemon squares, and lemon curd-filled cupcakes and wondering what I was going to order.
I looked at Shambles. "What do you recommend?"
"Um...," Shambles mumbled, still eyeing Tate, still not quite certain how his judgment would come down.
"That's hard," Sunny put in. "Shambles is a master with lemon."
After she imparted this knowledge, I stared at her. Then, knowing what it meant, I ordered, "I'll take one of anything with lemon in it."

FYI, I loved this one y'all. So you may see quotes from it for a few weeks. ;)

"Two kinds of women get under your skin. The ones who do damage, they don't feel good there but once you're fuckin' stupid enough to let them in you got no choice but to take the time it takes to work them out. Then there are the ones who don't do damage, who feel good there, feed the muscle, the bone, the soul, not rip it or break it or burn it. The ones you don't wanna work out."

Can you guess which kind Lauren is?!?

*~*~*~*~*~*

This scene made me laugh. Lauren had been explaining her fondness for grape Kool-Aid to Tate and how her ex-husband didn't want her drinking it for fear of ruining furniture...

"What's funny?" I asked.
"I ain't a grape Kool-Aid type of guy either," he answered.
"That's funny?" I asked.
"But you want it, you shouldn't stop yourself from havin' it just because I ain't."
"Okay," I said softly.
"You spill it on my couch, babe, just sayin'..." He stopped.
"What?"
His neck bent and his face got close to mine. "I really don't give a fuck. My couch is shit."

That's What HE Said #61 ~ Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #42

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies @Chapter Break. Here's the deal: every Thursday, post a line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. Keep in mind, these are direct quotes from dialog in the books. The quote doesn't have to be romantic - just something our hunky hero said to his lucky lady. Be sure to link up over at Chapter Break as well.

"I'm alive, I've got my freedom, a job, two bucks in my pocket, and a beautiful woman who sees something in me. What else could I need?"

*~*~*~*~*~*

I thought this scene was cute. I liked watching Robin and Phoenix getting to know one another.

"Do you ever eat?" I asked her, eyeing the pathetic selection in her fridge. It ws mostly filled with condiments and string cheese. There were eggs, though, and a loaf of bread that when I squeezed it, felt a little stale.
"Of course I eat. I just don't cook. I eat simple stuff.""Do you have syrup?"
"Yes. For my frozen waffles."
"Those taste like cardboard," I told her, pulling out the eggs and bread. "I'll make you some French toast then."
"Really?" She looked dubious.
"Sure, why not?"
As I cracked eggs into a bowl I found in the cupboard, she poured out the coffee. "Do you want cream and sugar?"
