Synopsis
I'm writing this because you begged. You know how I love the begging. In fact, you probably know too many things and know them far too well. Who am I? Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I was a whore in my youth, a killer since my adolescence, and a monster as a man. I am the man who kidnapped Livvie. I am the man who held her in a dark room for weeks. But, most importantly, I am the man she loves. She loves me. It's quite sick, isn't it? Of course, there's more to our story than can be surmised in a few short sentences, but I'm at a loss for justifying my behavior back then. I assume if you're reading this, I don't need to make those justifications. You've already made your own. You're reading this because you want to know about the rest of the story. You want to know what happened that warm summer night in September of 2010, the night I met Livvie at The Paseo. It was the night my life changed all over again. It didn't happen exactly as Livvie said. She's been very kind to me in the retelling of our story. The truth is far more...complicated.

I just realized that I never reviewed The Dark Duet here on my blog even though I was blogging when I read it. I'm sure I had my reasons then but I can't fathom what they were. It's been almost 5 years now since I last visited Livvie and Caleb but I found their story just as riveting.

***

"I found redemption. I found forgiveness. I found love."
-Caleb
Epilogue was the perfect gift from Roberts to fans of her Dark Duet. Experiencing the HEA or at least the happy-for-now through Caleb's POV made his and Livvie's ending that much more touching. And I wouldn't mind more from this world if Roberts were ever to feel so inclined.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Dark Duet, Caleb is the antihero - sort of villain - being the man who kidnapped Livvie. But through those books we learned about him, his past, what shaped him into the man he is, willing to do what he does. We also saw that he was redeemable. That underneath all his rough exterior and volatile moods and scary actions is a man who is flawed, damaged...but worthy of redemption and love. I wouldn't have read Epilogue if I felt otherwise.

So having access to his thoughts, fears, dreams, and nightmares in this final installment only served to solidify my feelings about him. Livvie and his feels for her make him vulnerable - which is a position Caleb hasn't been in for a long time. It's a position he isn't comfortable with. But to prove to himself that he is a changed man, capable of love, and able to earn redemption and love even though I'm not sure he'll ever feel worthy of it, he'll allow himself that vulnerability.

He took her life only to end up saving it. She, in turn, saved his.
"Survival is the most important thing. It affords us the chance to live and to find all of the things that make living worthwhile."
Indeed.

Epilogue was sweet, steamy, and heartwarming. Caleb and Livvie's love didn't come about conventionally. But it's love nonetheless and their story is one that will stay with me.

Synopsis
Third novel in the With Ties That Bind trilogy. Final novel in the Broken Bonds series.

To protect the woman he loves, Detective Ethan Quinn defied the law he's defended and upheld his entire career. He turned his back on his honor and ethics with only one objective in mind: protect Avery at all cost. Now he's tangled in a web of deceit and corruption, no better than the killer he's hunting.

As Quinn navigates a treacherous maze, he senses a rat amid his department. He suspects the perpetrator is hiding in plain sight, using their shield within the law to disguise them.

Who is the real Alpha?

Having been framed for murders and crimes they didn't commit, a suspect is under investigation by not only the ACPD, but the FBI, and lead medical examiner Avery Johnson feels pressure from all sides as she guards the secrets within her lab. Quinn went to great lengths to save her, to protect her...and now it's her turn to be the hero for the man she loves.

A showdown is looming, the Alpha is ready to strike. No one is safe as the clock ticks down to the final moments that will test every member of the task force, leaving only one side left standing.

TWolfe has really found her stride with this dark and twisty series. Hmm, what does that say about her? *wink* I've been anxiously awaiting this final installment - to have all my questions answered, to see how it all shakes out and who is left standing. TWolfe did not disappoint. Watching as Quinn tries to protect Avery, as Avery tries to protect Quinn and Sadie, seeing pieces fall into place - it was so exciting I was flipping through the pages as fast as I could. I even stuttered over a familiar name - my own - having forgotten I was making a cameo. And the reveal - damn, TWolfe. You are good! I'd like to say I had it figured out but I'd be lying.

My favorite elements in this installment and the series overall:
  • Avery's strength and resilience. I loved seeing her embody the survivor she is and take a stand - fight back!
  • Quinn realizing who he really is and what he's capable of. I didn't feel his actions ever compromised his integrity even though he did. I felt his actions proved something most of us will never know about ourselves - what we're willing to do to protect the one we love.
  • The profiling/serial killer element. Whatever is says about me, I find it fascinating and TWolfe gave us insight not only into a serial killer but also into those who hunt them.
  • The introspection the series sparked - what would I do? How far would I go? What is my breaking point - the line I'd be leery of crossing for fear of becoming a monster? Do we all have a little darkness in us?
This entire series has been riveting. If you like dark romantic suspense with a side of mind f#ck, this series is for you. PSA: With Visions of Red, the book that started it all and where you'll need to begin the journey, is FREE. Just click the title. You're welcome.

Synopsis
I've never been afraid of the dark...but that doesn't mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can't have, but I should've thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.

Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.

Number Two is mostly gentle. But it's the other side of him I like best. The wild side.

Number Three is mostly reserved. He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.

It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That's it. That's all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.

I just didn't expect to like them.

I've read and reviewed every one of JA Huss' books and I have to say there comes a point where it's difficult to find different ways to extol her virtues in storytelling. I mean, her books almost always hit the mark for me. I know no matter what I'm going to get a well-crafted story, typically at least some suspense, a plotline that messes with my head and keeps me guessing, characters so well-wrought they feel like real people. And in Taking Turns she delivered all of that. But this story...this story was also more. And seeing as how I'm always impressed by Huss anyway, it's telling that with this story I was utterly captivated from start to finish...dazzled.

Taking Turns tells the story of four people - one woman, three men - who enter into an unconventional relationship. They each have their own reasons for doing so - the men having been doing so for years. While getting acquainted and comfortable in the relationship, they not only learn about each other but also about themselves.

The story is told from the POVs of each of the four and I appreciated this because it enabled me to get a solid understanding of each character - even if I wasn't privy to all their secrets. There is also a fifth character who plays an integral role in the lives of the four - one we never meet but learn a lot about.

There are secrets - of course there are secrets, this is Huss after all. And I can say in all honesty that I didn't guess what they were and they made powerful impacts. Taking Turns is also very sexy. Huss has written sexy before but not like this. I commend Huss for taking something taboo and making it so accessible. I also commend her for taking on a topic like female sexuality. I admire her saying that it's okay for a woman to be sexual, to own her own sexuality. It's so true - we should not feel shame for liking sex.

The characters, Chella, Bric, Quin, and Smith - they're all complicated and they're all searching for something. They all entered the game with a purpose. However, I'm not yet certain what all those purposes are. These characters, they're each flawed and yet perfect in their imperfection. I adore each of them and am eager for the continuation of their stories.

I don't see Huss making any less of an impression with her stories any time soon so I suppose I'll have to continue to search for creative ways to sing her praises.

Synopsis
*Dark erotic standalone that may have triggers

Here at Lark and Gannet, you'll work directly under the partners, being groomed by the most powerful, all-male partnership to handle an exclusive clientele. While within The Firm, your level of training goes deeper, requiring more...varied tasks, which you're obligated to perform to your Master's pleasing.

Are you nervous? You should be. Chase Larking has chosen you to be his submissive.

Alexis Wilde, will you submit?

All I wanted was to save my brother. Something my parents failed to do--and then, I failed him also. As an introvert, getting ahead in the cutthroat law firm required a level of ego stroking I didn't possess, and that meant my talents were overlooked. Until Chase Larkin noticed me.

My erotic fantasy come to life, Chase is all powerful, all man, all dominant. In one night, he changed my life irrevocably. Now I'm ruined, destined to crave him forever. His scent. His taste. His brutal touch...

If I never followed him to his office that night, then none of this would've happened. A stalker on the prowl. Our lives in jeapardy. And only a moment--one pivotal moment--to decide our fate. His life or mine.

*This is a full length, standalone dark romance with an antihero that may trigger uncomfortable feelings for the reader.

Wowza! TWolfe took a small departure from her dark romantic thrillers and went more towards pure erotic romance with this one but with Derision she still delivered a tight story with a suspense element. And it was riveting!

The way TWolfe intertwined The Firm with the firm was clever. When hiring Lark and Gannet for representation, no one would ever suspect all that goes on within or that the partners in the law firm are also partners in a wholly different kind of venture - The Firm. TWolfe did well in describing both - I was accompanying Alexis along the hallways of both.

Alexis is a paralegal at Lark and Gannet. She's hardworking, quiet, keeps to herself...meek, even. A true submissive. She's worked at the firm for a year now and other than performing her job, she's done little else with anyone at the firm. She has kept a close eye on Chase Lark though. In fact, he seemingly takes up some significant space in her mind.

Chase likes rules and order. He keeps all things in his life structured. So despite the fact that Alexis is being groomed for him, at his directive, he's not ready for the chaos she will bring into his life. However, a power play among the partners forces the issue.

I liked both Alexis and Chase. I could identify with Alexis and I felt her emotions acutely when others said hurtful things about her. Chase is unapologetic about who he is, and that's an attractive quality. Seeing how they mesh, how their personalities work together, and the power shift between them was fascinating. The relationship between Alexis and Chase, although it developed quickly, felt genuine. It is HOT - their chemistry is off the charts - and I loved the dynamics between them. I felt the intensity between them happened a bit fast but then these two knew a lot about the other going in - we just weren't privy to them gaining this knowledge. So despite my delight in the budding feelings, I wished for a bit more time for the development. That being said, they are clearly meant to be together...they fit perfectly. The suspense element was well done and even though I had my suspicions, I was only partly right. TWolfe managed to shock me with the reveal even if I thought things wrapped up a little too neatly.

TWolfe is proving to be a masterful storyteller. Her style makes for a smooth pace and concise execution. And her stories are captivating. Derision was her first foray into straight erotic romance and she delivered a gripping story along with smoking-hot sexy times - a *must* for me. I'd also like to not that while Derision does deal with a D/s relationship, no flogging, whipping, etc., occurred. ;) TWolfe writes complex characters in stories with depth and provocative topics - and she always delivers on the emotion.

Trisha, what's next??

Synopsis
This series is a spinoff of the Broken Bonds serial which must be read prior to beginning this first book. Contains spoilers to the Broken Bonds serial.

Detective Ethan Quinn has questions. The Arlington Slasher case is closed, the UNSUB no longer a threat--but Quinn can't quiet the suspicion he harbors towards his partner and the young, attractive M.E. Not only does he loathe his uncertainty, he's torn between doing his job and protecting his team.

But burying himself in cases no longer works. He's restless. On edge. And tired of fighting his compulsions. Quinn has always viewed the law in black and white. Only now his world is swirling with a murky gray that threatens to devour him.

When lead medical examiner Avery Johnson careens toward a dangerous path, she pulls the unwitting detective into a dark web of deception and lust, triggered by a spree of recent killings.

Is this new player linked to the Bathory murders, or is it another copycat?

Time almost took Avery from him once before. As the clock ticks, Quinn will stop at nothing to protect her, refusing to let Avery become a victim again. Against his uncompromising logic, Quinn can't deny his feelings. Avery forces him to acknowledge his darker desires, tempting his control--which weakens with every second he spends with the feisty M.E. as they hunt down the perpetrator threatening to tear them apart.

What a wickedly twisted mind Ms. Wolfe must possess!

With Ties That Bind takes us back into the ACPD where Quinn and Avery are investigating a possible link between two victims. The link they find, however, opens up a can of worms neither of them wanted open. And then the unthinkable...is Avery in danger again?

I like the mix of police procedural and romantic suspense Ms. Wolfe weaves into this dark story. With Ties That Bind lacked the criminal profiling element of With Visions of Red, but I'm hoping to see some in the next installment. The reason behind these latest crimes was interesting as was is link to Avery. And I really appreciate how Ms. Wolfe tied the crimes together with events from With Visions of Red. I'm sure that'll only add to teh suspense over the course of this part of the series.

The budding relationship between Quinn and Avery is an element I look forward to watching continue in its development, especially since it goes against Quinn's code. The pull between them is palpable and intensified with all that's happened to Avery. Quinn is hesitant and Avery is as well, but for different reasons.

The ending left me frantically processing and questioning. Who is this sick person? Do we already know him? I can't get any of the puzzle pieces to fit together yet and I'm biting my nails in anxiety wanting the next set of pieces so I can begin laying out the puzzle to see if I can figure out the picture.

#COYER Review ~ Spin ~ CD Reiss

Songs of Corruption #1
Release Date: March 10, 2014
Genre: Adult, Dark Romance, Contemporary Romance
Source: Purchased on Kindle
Rating: 5 Bookworms

Synopsis
***You do NOT need to read Songs of Submission to read Spin***

Mafia capo, Antonio Spinelli blew through my orderly life like a cyclone.

Gorgeous and passionate, with a breathtaking brutality, he put me under his spell the moment he touched me, drawing me into his underworld of risk, violence and betrayal.

And I found, just as this sophisticated savage didn't trust me, I didn't trust myself. Something happened to me. Some alchemy from the heat between us.

I discovered I was a savage, too.

I like a book that grabs me by the throat and throws me into the deep waters to struggle in the waves of the characters' story. Reiss does just that in Spin. In fact, she threw me into the deep, with waves crashing and sharks circling. In other words, the story was a roller coaster of emotions - thrilling and terrifying, where I watched as Theresa and Antonio found out exactly what they were made of.

Theresa, recently publicly humiliated by the betrayal of her now ex-fiance, is coping by continuing her work while trying to figure out how to deal with loving him still. She's very good at compartmentalizing. She's a girl who's always prepared. An evening out with her sister leads to a chance encounter with Antonio Spinelli. With one look, and a few words, she was a goner.
"His words had fingers, and as he spoke, they drifted down my body, fondling me and arousing me."
Antonio makes her feel things she's never felt before. This leads to an affair and Theresa learning far more about the mafia and herself than she'd ever anticipated.

Antonio sees Theresa and knows he wants her. Problem is, she's not a part of the life and therefore not privy to their ways. In many ways, Antonio prefers this. It may even be a part of the attraction. But as he and Theresa get more deeply involved, important choices must be made - life-altering choices.

Spin is dark - darker than Reiss' Songs of Submission, in my opinion. It's violent and yet sexy. Reiss always amazes me with her ability to take a raw, gritty scene and paint it in a way to make it sexy and beautiful. With Theresa and Antonio, this is quite a feat as the subjects dealt with their story are not always pretty.

After ruminating on this for awhile, I've decided that at its heart, this is a journey for both Theresa and Antonio. I think neither really know what's in their hearts. But with each other, they're learning.

***
Wasted Lust is a standalone full-length romantic suspense filled with lies, secrets, and the power of redemption by the New York Times bestselling author, JA Huss.

Although Wasted Lust can absolutely be read as a standalone, for the veteran Huss reader, it's a gift. It takes plot threads, characters and events and weaves them together - and I'm not talking about just tying up loose ends - to create this incredibly intricate, complex, and beautiful picture. Huss doesn't shy away from the ugly - and Sasha's story is anything but simple.

Little Sasha is all grown up. Of course, she was fairly mature at 13, when we first met her. Being a Company kid - a daughter at that - her childhood was unconventional. She learned things and saw things no child should. And it affected the person she's become despite being adopted and given the normalcy she didn't have with her dad. But at 24, Sasha is still searching - still trying to figure out where she fits after having the one thing she knew for sure she'd have taken away.

When she's met at the airport by Agent Jax Barlow, she thinks her past is finally catching up with her. He starts asking questions and he knows things about her he shouldn't. Most surprising is his certainty that Nick is back for her. Jax brings out the old Sasha - the one she's spent so much time burying. I loved seeing the Sasha she used to be shining through, threatening to break through the veneer she's perfected over the last 10 years.

Jax is intriguing. On the one hand, he's doing his job. But on the other, he's way too personally involved. This leads to many questions and we, as readers, learn right along with Jax that not everything in his life is as he thought.

Nick...Nick broke my heart. The things he did, the life he had led is uncompromising. He sees things as they are and although some may not agree with his methods, he does what he must to make things right.

I don't want to say too much more because I don't want to ruin any of the suspense, but I will say that, in typical Huss fashion, nothing is as it seems. She takes you down one road only to take an abrupt turn in a completely different direction. And anything I thought I'd figured out was wrong. As I navigated all these twists and turns, I had revelations about many things. Again, you can read this as a standalone but reading all the books makes for a much richer experience.

Huss once said she didn't think she'd write more about Sasha. I'm thrilled that Sasha kept stomping around in her head, as only Sasha could do, demanding her story be told. As I said, Wasted Lust is a gift - whether you've read the previous novels or not. But if you haven't read Huss, I implore you to start the journey. You'll never travel the route you're expecting, but it's the journey that makes the destination such a treat!

Synopsis
The UNSUB has made contact.

After a rapid string of grisly murders shakes the usually peaceful city of Arlington, Virginia, the sadistic killings of young women lull into a deceptive calm. Agent Sadie Bonds knows the terror isn't over; serial killers don't stop until caught.

And this sadist has targeted the profiler, revealing pieces of her dark past and weaving her secrets into each gruesome crime scene. Is the killer someone from Sadie's past, her present? Or is he part of a fated future she brought on herself? The answer lies withing the riddle of the copycat killings, ones mimicked after the infamous Blood Countess.

As tension brews in the department awaiting the UNSUB's next move, Sadie's more on edge--her deviant cravings for the possible perpetrator have ratcheted out of control. She needs the feel of Colton's ropes binding her, sheltering her from stark reality.

Only Colton Reed has his own twisted secrets that threaten to unravel not only Sadie as they come to light, but the UNSUB's carefully constructed web now entangling both the profiler and her sexy bondage rigger.

Is Sadie too close to this case to be objective, or is the UNSUB closer to her than she ever imagined...

This second installment was every bit as suspenseful as its predecessor. With the UNSUB silent for the moment, with the exception of text messages, new details revealed about Sadie and Colton, questionable behavior from characters, and an addition to the cast, the question of the identity of the UNSUB is every bit as muddled - at least for me - as it was.

I thrilled at learning a little more about Sadie and as these details where revealed I realized I didn't know her as well as I thought. The revelations about Colton were heartbreaking but I so appreciated getting some clarity about this enigma of a man.

Sadie and Colton make great strides in deepening their bond. The alternating POV once again added so much depth to the characters. Getting glimpses into their thinking enabled me to understand where they were coming from - and where they were headed - in relation to each other.

The tension created with the addition of Detective Carson to the task force along with Detective Quinn's odd behavior have me twisted in knots over what is going on and what's coming next. The UNSUB is getting brazen - well more so - in his actions and I'm worried for Sadie and Colton. As for who he is? Well, I have a few theories. We'll see if my theories pan out. I kinda feel like I might be off-base.

The only thing I missed in this installment was the profiling/procedural element. As I reflect, it was there but it wasn't as focal as it was in book one. However, I still couldn't put this down - I was enthralled. Ms. Wolfe continues to lead me down a dark, twisty path. How long do I have to wait for all the answers, Ms. Wolfe?!?

SASHA

I’m not a player. I know there are girls out there who do this kind of thing for a living. They scout out prospective husbands. Dress up, put on a show, try to hook one with the bait.

I have no bait. I’m cute—not sophisticated like my mom’s friend Rook, or badass like her friend Veronica, or even smart and sassy like my mom, but cute. A Smurf, they used to call me.

And those ladies are the only real role models I ever had growing up. That’s it. The extent of my wily ways with men come from half-ass copy-catting people who have more game in their pinky fingers than I have in my whole body.

So I’m at a complete loss here. Because Jax insists on treating me like a woman. And I’ve spent a good number of years trying to avoid this kind of scenario. The kind that sweeps you off your feet. The kind that jumpstarts your heart and makes it hum in a way you never thought possible. The kind that makes you doubt all those pledges you made to yourself through the years.

I will never love again. I will never give my heart to a man. I will never have to endure the crushing reality that comes after the only person I ever wanted to be with practically begged me to forget about him.

I tried it, it just didn’t work. I can’t just erase my first crush. I can’t just throw away the one thing I held onto after my father died. I kept the boys at bay all during high school. I didn’t even lose my virginity until my first year of college. Ford made sure of that. The memory of his crazy overprotective antics as I grew up make me smile.

So I don’t have much experience.

But Jax is a player, I can see that now. He’s got me wound up tight. My head is pounding with the possibilities he comes with.

Sex being one of them. I have not had sex in over two years. And I’m not one of those girls who go for a toy at the first hint of a dry spell. After two years though, I’m considering that option.

But now Jax is here. Kissing me. Making my whole body tingle. Awakening the desire I’ve pent up for so long.

“Are you afraid of planes, Sasha?”

I look over at Jax. “What?”

“Does landing bother you?”

“No,” I say, confused. “Why?”

“You’re squeezing my hand so hard, you might be cutting off my circulation.”

Cover Reveal ~ With Visions of Red ~ Trisha Wolfe

It is my pleasure to be a part of the cover reveal for Trisha Wolfe's With Visions of Red.

I think the cover is rather startling. What do y'all think?

With Visions of Red (Broken Bonds, #1)
RELEASE DATE: May 7, 2015

SYNOPSIS
Told from multiple points of view, this is a mature dark romance intended for adult readers.

Criminal profiler Sadie Bonds knows blood. Her affair with the gruesome, dark world of killers began long before she started applying her analytical skills to investigate gory crime scenes. She gets inside the killers’ heads, breaks them down, relates to them on an arcane level. She prefers it this way—because it’s safer to ally herself with the villain than the victim. At least, that’s how she’s coped ever since she was abducted and tortured as a teen.

She will never be a victim again.

Now, she’s honed her skills in order to bring justice to these ritualistic offenders.

Working alongside her colleagues, armed with sharp wit and a SIG, Sadie always catches her sadist. Until one ruthless serial killer gets inside Sadie’s head, turning the tables. He knows her secrets. Her obsessions. The darkest, most deviant part of her soul.

When she meets Colton Reed, dangerous stakes are raised as he threatens to unravel her control and reveal her darkest fantasies. The sexy-as-sin bondage rigger at an exclusive BDSM club pushes her boundaries, forcing her to acknowledge that side of herself she fears. Plunged into a realm of torture and suffering, pain and pleasure, Sadie balances on the razor-sharp edge of two intersecting worlds threatening to swallow her.

Passion and lust ignite. Dark and light battle. This explosive first installment of the Broken Bonds series sets the exhilarating pace for a cat and mouse game where no one knows who’s really pulling the strings.

From an early age, Trisha Wolfe dreamed up fantasy worlds and characters and was accused of talking to herself. Today, she lives in South Carolina with her family and writes full time, using her fantasy worlds as an excuse to continue talking to herself.
