Rock F*ck Club ~ My Interview with Author Michelle Mankin (@MichelleMankin)

Hey Michelle, I appreciate you taking the time to answer some questions I had immediately upon finishing Rock F*ck Club

BB: This is quite a premise. Did anything in particular inspire it?

MM: A number of events inspired it. The sexual empowerment for a woman theme in Rock F*ck Club came after I read a very thought provoking article by Lexxie Lin from Unconventional Book Views about romance being more than just Mommy Porn. (An aside: that term sets me off.) The Navajo details were inspired after a trip to Phoenix in November. The two best friends road trip aspect came after talking to two girls outside a club in Dallas. They were there early like me in order to be closest to the stage to see their favorite band.

BB: Was the mention of past drug use on Raven't part to establish something about her character?

MM: She is flawed by strong and resilient? Yes, for sure. She acted out in order to get attention from her dad. As the story unfolds she learns with a certain someone's help to handle that particular issue more maturely.

BB: Raven's close friendship with Marsha and Lucky's closeness with Sky and his bandmates added depth to the characters and story. Do you feel as they do in that family and friends are integral to a happy life?

MM: Friendships enrich life. There might be a quote about that in the story. It's something I truly believe.

BB: There was a certain irony to the circumstances Raven found herself in once RFC took off. Are you making a statement there? Or do you feel Raven proved/made her point even if she didn't have all the control?

MM: 0-0  Yes about our perspective being colored by the filter we view the world through. It's too spoilery to give the quote I want to, but if you do a word search for perception you'll find it.

BB: I was delighted with the inclusion of all the bands I've previously met in your books. Did you have fun with that element?

MM: Yes. I. Did. Once I owned up to the story I wanted to tell. At one time I considered a pseudonym for this story. But in the end I decided I had to be bold and brave like my heroine in the story.

BB: I enjoyed the Navajo/Native American element you wove into the story. Was it a starting point or did it come about while you were writing?

MM: It was a starting point. After talking to Aunt Eve who lives in Phoenix I knew I had to have a spiritual symbolic place in that region.

BB: The travel aspect - visiting all the locales with Raven and Marsha was fun. Have you been to all the stops along Raven's RFC tour?

MM: Hmm. Great question. Dallas check. NYC  check. Boston check. Chicago check. Detroit(No) Nola check. Atlanta check. Phoenix check. Kansas City check. LA check

BB: Will we see more from this set of characters? Please????

MM: Definitely. RFC will continue. More seasons. More power for women. More rock stars. I have ideas for novellas with some of Raven's ten guys and I even left myself some wiggle room to tell more with her and a certain someone.

Thanks so much for allowing me to interview you, Michelle!

Author Interview & Giveaway ~ Michelle Mankin ~ Outside

Outside, the latest release from Michelle Mankin, released on the 19th. If you missed my review, you can check it out here. Today, I'm sharing my interview with Michelle as well as a couple of teasers from the book. Oh, and I'm also giving away an ebook copy of Outside. ;) Enjoy!

Hey Michelle! Thanks for letting me get inside your head for Outside. :)

You said these were some of your favorite characters and I could feel your love for them as you told their story. Was there a specific inspiration for Mona and Linc?

As a couple together I love them the most of any I have written so far. My female narrator for my audio books inspired Simone. She sings and she has a beautifully strong steady spirit like Simone.

Can you tell us about your research?

I watched copious amounts of youtube videos and surf competitions, wrote the rough draft, then flew to Ocean Beach, went up and down the coast to map out the band's footsteps then took a surf lesson. My surf instructor and I really bonded. And yes I have a new passion. Surfing. It is a very spiritual thing.

I adored your surfing lingo and surfing metaphors that were interspersed throughout the story. Did you do research on surfing and then write the story OR did you have the skeleton of the story and then do research to fill it in?

The Outside term I had from the beginning. The word is interspersed throughout the novel. Here let me show you.

Outside, she drew in a deep breath of air. “I love this time of day. The salt from the ocean smells so good. I don’t know how you stay away.”

But if I was going to venture outside my comfort zone was he the guy I wanted to take a chance on?

Once outside the gate, I hooked a sharp right my feet automatically leading in the direction my heart wanted to go.

“Come outside and talk to me a minute.” His voice was deep and tempting. “I want to ask you something.” The warmth of his breath tickled against my skin making me shiver.

I took her hand after we stepped outside into the humid air. The steady churn of the ocean was our music now.

When two girlfriends close ranks that usually puts us guys on the outside.”

I couldn’t protect her when she was in there and I was outside.

Leave the rest of the world and their expectations outside.

All metaphors for their relationship that he summarizes...

... You were like the perfect wave but instead of turning around and swimming toward you with all I had in me I went the opposite way, the wrong way.”

I really liked the way you presented Mona and Linc's story. Was there a particular reason you chose to use the Present-Past-Present, as well as Dual POV format?

I wanted to have the mystery of what broke these two people up who have such obvious chemistry carry you threw the story... as one reviewer said reading with her hand over her eyes knowing the bad is coming...

Music plays a big role in your creative process and your books. Since Mona and Linc's musical styles differ, I was wondering if there is any specific music that served as inspiration or helped you get into your creative place for writing their story.

My audio team is writing the music right now. Kai Kennicott is bluesy ...Wen Ross is the rocker.
The music I listened to while writing is on spotify.

After combining music and surfing, I'm curious as to whether the ocean now speaks to you in the same way music does.

The ocean has always spoke to me. They say the throne room of God is surrounded by a crystal sea. That's where I will be snorkeling with underwater speakers playing rock music.

Chulo...I would be remiss if I didn't mention him. ;) He has so much personality and he's adorable! What made you decide to include him in this story? And what does his name mean?

I have been waiting for a place to fit him in. He and Simone are a natural fit. Chulo is slang for cute in Spanish.

What's next from this series?

Riptide
Patch and Karen
Present Past Present
Present where Outside left off, Past beginning where Simone left the band
More surf, more Ash, Ramone, more ocean beach. more Chulo!!!

Thanks again for taking time for this!

Happy to. You ask great questions. You just reminded me that I love this story.

Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Goodreads ~ Amazon ~ B&N

Synopsis
When handsome California surf god Lincoln Savage suddenly rolls into Ocean Beach like a rogue wave, shy beauty Simone Bianchi's foundation is shaken. No longer under the thumb of her domineering father, she's made a simple quiet life for herself and her fluffy fourteen pound Havanese pup running a surf shop in her hometown of OB. Long ago she gave up her dreams for a future with Linc.

But now the notorious lead singer of the Dirt Dogs has returned, and Simone is reluctant to admit that she's still vulnerable to his killer dimpled smile and easy charm. She finds that although she's stowed away the mementos, it hasn't been as easy to erase the memories of their epic summer love.

It seems he hasn't forgotten, either.

Is the recording contract he's offering merely a pretense?

Or does he have something more in mind?

Does he really believe that they can just pick up where they left off, despite all the bad luck and heartache?

And is she willing to risk everything again for one last chance at love?

***Teaser***

The walls vibrated as soon as the spotlights hit them. Feet stomped. Fans yelled. Some even stood on their chairs. Camera lights clicked on and so did Lincoln. Brightly. He strode to the center of the stage. Confident. Compelling. Controlled. A cosmic force.

He plucked the mic from the stand, glared at the audience daring them to come along with him or get the hell out of the way, before he and the guys launched into a cover of 'Satisfaction' that kicked ass as righteously as the original.

It went uphill from there. Ramon on guitar flashing his flirt. Ash slamming sexy on his drums. Patch firm and steady on bass. And Linc my gorgeous warrior with depths of worth that he still failed to recognize eclipsing them all. The Dirt Dogs might still be a bit rough around the edges but they were undeniably on the ascent. What had started out as something to occupy their time when the surf wasn't up had transformed into a magical melange of Pacific saltwater, California sun and hard rocking in your face attitude.

Blog Tour Review & Author Interview ~ 7 Years Bad Sex ~ Nicky Wells

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Nicky Wells' 7 Years Bad Sex. My stop includes all the details on this fun read, my review, and an interview with Ms. Wells. Enjoy!

7 Years Bad Sex7 Years Bad Sex
Release Date: May 14, 2015
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Source: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review
Rating: 4 Bookworms
Goodreads ~ Amazon ~ B&N

Synopsis
One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after...

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain't over 'til it's over or, in this case...it ain't over 'til the newlyweds sing.

Both witty and poignant in equal measure, 7 Years Bad Sex is a gem!

Alex and Casey make up half the band, Blue Heart. And they own each others' hearts. The story begins at the wedding - a beautiful affair. However, once their honeymoon begins they realize they have a problem...they seem to be having issues getting completely physical.

7 Years Bad Sex chronicles Alex and Casey's start to married life and their trials in intimacy. While neither believes in such things as curses, it's hard to deny that something wonky is going on. They try everything, and I do mean everything, to make it to the finish line. Luckily, they have a deep and abiding love because the lack of release keeps them both on the verge of blowing.

Wells cleverly relates this tale of woe with with both humor and compassion. I admired their courage and their mutual respect. I also admired the love and deep bond between Alex and Casey and I was anxious for them to reverse the curse. They were fortunate to have supportive friends and to have met and made a few new ones. It eased their struggle. The lengths this couple had to go to would push some over the edge. Alex and Casey, though, they fought hard and so deserved their HEA.

Hi Nicky! Thanks for stopping by!

I laughed over your *note* about 7 Years Bad Sex being a pure work of fiction - that it didn't happen to you. ;) Where did this idea come from?

No, it definitely didn't happen to me. If it had, I'd have had to have published it under a pen name, LOL!
The idea came to me at the awards dinner at the Festival of Romance in 2013.  I was at a table with nine other authors. We were all toasting each other and the award winners, and suddenly my table neighbour nudged me and said, "you didn't make eye contact with me while we were toasting, that's seven years bad sex for you." Of course I laughed. What else could I do? I'd never even heard about the superstition, but he went on to explain it in great detail. And there it was in my head, the complete idea, quite suddenly. What if you took a couple of newlyweds and inflicted that curse on them?
Obviously that was in 2013, so I let the idea stew for quite some time; plus I had "Fallen for Rock" and "Fairy Tale in New York" in my writing 'queue' at that point. But at long last, in January of this year, I sat down and wrote the whole thing in about nine weeks. It was an awesome (and quite funny!) experience!

Some couples might not make it through the difficulties Alex and Casey endured. What do you think it is about their relationship that makes them so strong?

Real love and a great sense of humour. Oh, and rock music. And their friends!
But seriously, I wanted to explore the whole idea of marriage, love, and sex. Are they ependent on each other? What if you take one away? As Casey and Alex have to acknowledge several times in the story, everyone has needs--but how do you cope if those needs can't be met? Obviously we're not expecting a marriage to be fireworks for all eternity, but what if the physical romance fizzles out completely? What do you do?
Alex and Casey have love and a strong friendship that preceded their relationship. When the sex goes wrong, they are able to laugh it off to begin with. It's only later, when there's no seeming way out, that the stress begins to wear them down. And yes, there's a real crisis point towards the end that gets resolved in perhaps a slightly unorthodox manner... but it gets them through, doesn't it?  So love, friendship, and laughter. And rock music!

I saw you did some research into British law regarding a few things about Alex and Casey's story...oh, and oysters! ;) It made me wonder whether there was any truth to the myth of the 7 Years Bad Sex curse?

Great question. It's a superstition held in many parts of Europe. Actress Keira Knightley (she of Pirates in the Caribbean) apparently believes in it. Is there any truth to it? *shrugs* I really couldn't say. Personally, I'm not superstitious by nature. I don't believe that breaking a mirror gives you seven years bad luck. I don't cross the road  when I see a black cat or throw salt over my shoulder to ward off evil. And obviously I didn't get afflicted by seven years bad sex after my own toasting faux pas two years ago.
I couldn't find any information on the origins of this superstition... So let's agree it's a myth and a superstition, but it makes for a great story!

Will be see any more of Alex, Casey, and their gang?

Ah. Hm.
You see, technically, "7 Years Bad Sex" was intended as a standalone. But you know the ending, right? So the obvious sequel would have to be "7 Years NO Sex" for reasons that you might guess, and that your readers can find out  about at the end of the book.
Have I written it yet? No. But I just might... *winks*

I really enjoyed their story, Nicky! I'm glad you put humor in there, otherwise it would have been really sad! *ha*

Thanks, Brandee! It was quite a different thing for me to write, and a bit of a challenge at times. I didn't want it to be sordid and a jumbled collection of random sex scenes, because that really wasn't the point... But obviously I had to put some kind of suggestion and action in there. LOL! Glad you enjoyed it! XX

1. What made you decide to use Shakespeare as an inspiration for this series?

I had the idea for a girl who dressed up like a guy to get into a rock band. Originally Justin was going to die, but my youngest was reading Wednesday Wars in English and when I told him my story idea he said that sounds like Shakespeare and I remembered 12th night (I have some theatre background) and went with that instead.

2. I adore Mary's matchmaking antics. Will she (or Beth) get her own book?

A real life friend is my inspiration for Mary. She is a high school english teacher. She said no love scenes for her character BUT in the back of my mind I have an idea for a series of books using the 'older' characters like mary, brandee aprils mom, and bryan's mom--so I won't rule it out for sure.

3. Which guy, girl, or couple is/are your favorite in the series?

War and Shaina. Dizzy and April close 2nd

4. Obviously music is a big influence in your life. Do you have any personal experience which inspired the Love series?

I have always loved music. It has such transcendent power. lt is art just like a beautiful painting or a very good story. It can entertain, change your mood, and in some cases maybe even change your life.

5. Along those same lines, the scenes where you describe music, particularly playing it, are so well written. And your lyrics are amazing. Do you play an instrument and/or write music or do you have help with those elements?

My husband plays guitar, bass, and piano as a hobby. I am his biggest fan.
One of my biggest thrills as a writer has been my audio team bringing my books to life. They even wrote signature music for each Tempest guy. I swooned.

6. Which character(s) are most like you?

There is bits of my life in every single story. I think it brings some realism to put it there. Plus its definitely cathartic. Most recently we lost our George like April did in Relentless. When I heard the audio team act out some of those scenes it really made me cry.

7. Why did you change how Chris pursued/felt about Avery from the original Love Evolution?

Not intentionally. I just wanted to make the transition points smoother in my first story...to have fewer points of view...so when I rewrote it I gave Avery's take on him and his actions. He still wanted a sweet young thing, but you know Avery she thinks the best of people...

8. "Stories with subtext" - I love this element. Why did you decide to include those subtexts in your stories?

I was already doing it and Jay Crownover coined the term for me after reading Love Evolution. I like having layers in a story. I read for entertainment myself. I LOVE to read, and I like when there is just a little something extra to think about. I don't want to hit people over the head with subjects like teen pregnancy or depression but I think it's interesting to have them there in the context of the story.

9. When I met you at RT 2013, you said that Love Resolution was your favorite to write. Is it still?

No. Like any artist or writer I think my current project is always my favorite. So right now it is Strange Magic :)  <--Which is awesome!

Thanks, Michelle!!

**Spotlight Author Interview ~ Just Destiny ~ Theresa Rizzo**

I hope to have finished Just Destiny by the time this interview posts. I read rave reviews for it, so I one-clicked it, naturally, and asked Theresa if she'd mind doing an interview. Here is that interview and my review of Just Destiny will post soon. :)

Just DestinyJust Destiny by Theresa Rizzo
Release Date: March 31, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis
What would you do if your whole world fell apart?
Jenny Harrison made some poor choices in the past, but marrying Gabe was the best thing she'd ever done. They had the perfect marriage, until a tragic accident leaves Gabe brain dead and her world in ruins.
Devastated by grief, she decides to preserve the best of their love by conceiving his child, but Gabe's family is adamantly opposed, even willing to chance exposing long-held family secrets to stop her. Caught in a web of twisted motives and contentious legal issues, Jenny turns to best friend and attorney, Steve Grant. Steve wants to help Jenny, but he has reservations and secrets of his own.
When something so private and simple turns public and complicated, will Jenny relent? What is Steve willing to sacrifice to help Jenny?

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’ve raised four amazing kids while I learned the craft and business
of writing. I grew up in Michigan, but have lived in New York, Illinois, California and finally, Colorado. I adore reading and writing romance and while my stories might stray from strict definitions of that genre, my books will always have a romance in it.

What do you do when you're not writing?

I love to take long walks with my husband and pup, read, landscape, make mosaics, play a little tennis, watch favorite TV shows like Big Bang, The Voice, Dancing With The Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Downton Abbey—we watch a lot of TV.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either while growing up or as an adult?

Nope. When I was a kid, I loved the horse stories—Black Beauty etc and The little House on The Prairie, then as an adult I love romance—nearly all the subgenres, but I’ll stray outside romance a little to read Jodi Picoult and Harlan Coben occasionally, and of course, the Harry Potter series and Hunger Games were brilliant.

Why are readers going to love Just Destiny?

Because they’ll love Jenny and Gabe and sympathize with and root for Jenny—hopefully.

The 20s are tough years for a lot of us, filled with youthful mistakes—we’ve all been there, and anybody who’s loved another, will understand Jenny’s heartbreak when her beloved husband dies.

Also, the story brings up several interesting questions: Is it anybody’s business other than the wife’s, if she wants to have her dead husband’s baby? Should there be any laws governing that situation?

There are in other countries, but not in the US.

And More than 120,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants in the US. Though 90% of people support organ donation, less than 45% of Americans have joined their state donor registry. Do you believe in organ donation? Have you signed up—if you do believe in organ donation? I do and I have.

*I do and I have, as well. :)

Is anything in the book based on real life experiences or is it all
purely imagination?

Pure imagination.

My husband was on a business trip on my birthday, so my sister and brother-in-law took me out to dinner to celebrate and I’d cut out this article in the newspaper about a woman being sued by her deceased husband’s family to keep her from having his baby after he was dead.

The idea of having your dead husband’s baby seemed bizarre, but still it struck me as a frivolous, ridiculous lawsuit. I figured it wasn’t anybody’s business, after all once you get married, your body’s mine and mine’s yours, right?

My attorney sister got this puzzled look on her face and said, “Actually that’s a really interesting legal issue. I wonder if sperm is considered property . . .”

And then my brother-in-law looked at her, saying, “I’m not sure I’d want you to have my baby after I’m gone.”

So we discussed some legal and moral implications of the situation and what had initially seemed so incredibly simple and private suddenly became complicated and intriguing, propelling me to do some research into the legalities and morality of the issue.

I was so fascinated with the idea that I had to build a book around it.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

This is a really great question! Hmm . . . I think my favorite chapter
is . . . chapter 15—several months after Gabe’s death and Jenny agrees to accompany Steve to a work Christmas party. This is the first time Jenny seems to set aside her grief for even a few hours to have a little fun and remember what it’s like to be alive and happy—if even for a brief time. It’s an uplifting chapter that made me feel optimistic that sometime in the future, Jenny will be able to be happy again.

What project are you working on now?

Right now I’m finishing polishing the pre-quell to Just Destiny. It’s a shorter book (about 180pgs) about Jenny and Gabe’s romance. How met and fell in love and how they became friends with Steve—it’s the set up to Just Destiny.

Thanks, Theresa!

**Author Spotlight, Interview & Giveaway ~ Wormwood ~ Danielle Nevins**

Earlier this year, I read and reviewed D.H. Nevins' Wormwood. If you missed my review, you can read it here. I really enjoyed Wormwood, so I asked Ms. Nevins if I could interview her. Thankfully, she agreed. Recently, Ms. Nevins had some exciting happenings around Wormwood. She had the talented cover artist, Derek Murphy, ask if she'd like to see some designs he'd been inspired to create after reading Wormwood. Now, Wormwood has a new cover (I liked the original cover but I have to say this new cover is much more representative of the story) and the sequel, Angel of Shadow, has a lovely cover as well. Ms. Nevins also had a musician from the band Orca Flights approach her with a song he'd written specifically for the book. It's called Leap of Faith. So along with my interview with D.H., I'm going to share Wormwood's new cover and Leap of Faith for your enjoyment. :) And because I think this is a fantastic read, I'm also going a giveaway. Enjoy!

Wormwood by D.H. Nevins
Series: Wormwood #1
Release Date: September 26, 2011
Genre: Adult Fantasy/Post-apocalyptic
Rating: 5 Bookworms

Synopsis
Against a devastated, post-apocalyptic landscape, a legion of one hundred fierce half-angels is hell bent on purging the Earth of all humans. But one of them, the tormented Tiamat, struggles against his mission, and when he rescues a beautiful woman named Kali, he finds the attraction as troubling as it is dangerous. Can Kali trust the one creature who could be responsible for her ultimate demise?

You can hop over to D.H.'s blog to read an interview between her and Noah Coty, of Orca Flights.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in the Toronto area, but roughly 10 years ago, resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t a city person. So my husband and I moved into a log house in the woods—which is pretty much in the
middle of nowhere. We love it! We don’t have kids, but instead share our house with two cats. Now I don’t know where they got this idea, but they both act like they own the place.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I’m a teacher at a small, rural elementary school. The work keeps me very busy, but it’s gratifying. When I have some extra time—and I’m not writing—I tend to gravitate towards activities that get my
blood pumping: mainly hiking, canoeing, scuba diving and riding around on my motorcycle (which I’ve named Grendel). I’ve also tried white water rafting, hang gliding, sky diving, winter camping
(which was WAY too cold!) and zip lining. But that one thing that tugs at my soul more than anything else is travel, and true to that, my husband and I have dragged our backpacks around the world
twice.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

Diana Gabaldon, Jean Auel and Stephen King have all influenced me. The first two authors I mentioned have what I consider to be some of the best voices in writing, and they have both created very strong female protagonists in their books. As for Stephen King, I have always been in awe of the multi-faceted worlds and characters he’s created.

On to questions about Wormwood...

I loved Wormwood. Why do you think it resonates with readers?

First of all, thank you! I’m incredibly flattered by your question. However, I must admit it’s difficult to answer. Naturally, any writer would hope their book would resonate with readers. It helps that most of us write books we’d want to read ourselves and then hope that our readers have the same tastes we do. Perhaps in this case, I luckily enjoy the same sorts of stories as many other readers.

When I read, I need strong, visual imagery and characters who are not only believable, but likeable enough that I’m happy to throw myself into their world and experience it through their eyes. On top of that, I’m an action junkie, a romantic, a fan of conflict in writing and absolutely need to be surprised by plot twists. With all these elements in mind, I knew I had some work ahead of me if I was to pull this off. So knowing what I needed to do, I spent a year mapping out the story and scribbling extensive notes on the characters before I wrote a single word of Wormwood. Is this why it
resonates with readers? I honestly don’t know. In the end, all I can say for certain is I wrote a story I would love to read myself.

Did you always intend this story to continue?

No. In fact, in an early incarnation of the plot, I killed off the main character, Kali. But realizing that ending was a little too dark, I changed it. Within this change, I left it open for a possible sequel and by doing so, fell in love with some of the possibilities! Before Wormwood was finished, I had already plotted out my ideas for a trilogy.

Why did you choose this particular mythology and was it challenging weaving a story around it?

There are already innumerable apocalyptic scenarios that include viruses, natural disasters, aliens, nuclear war, rebelling technology and even zombies, and I knew if I wanted to write something fresh, I’d have to go a different route. When I started looking into religious mythologies, I was fascinated. There are detailed apocalyptic scenarios within literature from a wide range of religions, from Modern Christian to Hindu to Ancient Babylonian. I took various elements from many different religions, including some of the names of my characters—names which I wrote to have significant meaning within the story. Fortunately, it was time consuming but not particularly challenging. If anything, it enthralled me.

I liked that you made the Nephilim fallible. Why did you decide to do that?

Thanks! I got the idea from my husband, actually, and built the entire story around this first seed of discussion. Very early on, when I established that I wanted to base the apocalypse on a weaving of
religious mythologies, my husband said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if this angel had to do it—had to destroy the Earth—but he was incredibly conflicted and tormented about it?” Naturally, my answer was a resounding, “Yes!” So from that, I built the character, Tiamat. The other Nephilim were written to have very human emotions and weaknesses as well. It made them far more real for me.

Is Tiamat's grief over what he has to do part of that fallibility?

Absolutely. It is also his strength.

I love that Kali is such a strong heroine. Was it important to you that she be that way?

I don’t think I could have written her any other way. I would have been bored composing a story about a character who was weak-willed, selfish or whiney, and probably wouldn’t have finished
writing the book! No, she needed to be strong in order to drive both the story and the author!

Thanks, D.H.!!
