Genre: Adult, Dystopian, Romance

Goodreads

Synopsis
D.H. Nevins hurtles you into a world of half-angels, demons and tormented love in this driving, dystopian sequel to Wormwood.

Half-angels, known as Nephilim, have all but destroyed the surface of the Earth. Yet for Kali Michaels, her life is now much more complicated than simply surviving. Grappling with her own powerful identity, she worries her connection to the world of Shadows could destroy those around her.
And what if she hurts Tiamat Wormwood, the Nephilim outcast who has given everything to save her?
Tiamat and Kali know hey have no future - not when outside forces and Kali's own power push both the humans and the Nephilim to the brink of extinction.
As she fights to stop the inevitable, she is led to question who her real enemies are, and whether the ultimate threat may actually be herself.

To say I'd been anxiously awaiting the release of Angel of Shadow is an understatement. Wormwood made much an impression I couldn't wait to see what Kali and Tiamat did next. But wait I did. And fortunately, Angel of Shadow was worth the wait!

Highlights
  • Characters
Of course, Kali and Tiamat are the central characters of the story but Nevins also further developed characters we'd previously met as well as weaving in some new ones. All the characters, particularly a demon named Richard, added complexity to the story overall as well as creating tension, suspense, and providing comic relief. I'm a fan of character growth and watching Kali in particular grow, change, and mature was a pleasure.
  • Action/Suspense/Gritty Setting
Angel of Shadow didn't skimp on action or suspense. Now that the Nephilim are split and no one is quite certain what the new missions is, I waited and watched with bated breath to see what was going to happen. Also a revelation concerning Kali had me biting my nails as the repercussions slowly revealed themselves. And of course Richard had to keep stirring things up for all involved.
Nevins adeptly paints a post-apocalyptic landscape. I could almost taste the dust and ask, feel the crunch of dirt and small pebbles being walked on, feel the oppressive darkness of the caves. And the battle scenes had me gasping for air.
  • Thought-provoking Elements
Nevins had Kali, Tiamat, and other dealing with accepting new roles as well as accepting themselves when new characteristics/traits were realized. It was interesting and exciting to witness characters learning to deal when things went against long-held beliefs, when they reached deep and found inner strength they didn't realize was there, and try to understand that genetics don't make a person, it's the choices the person makes and the actions the take that make them who they are. Kali and Tiamat are also exploring love - what it means to love and to be loved.
And all this was delivered in Nevins' beautiful prose.

The future is uncertain for Kali, Tiamat, and their friends. Whatever comes, they'll face it together. I'm eager to see where things go from here.

Cover Reveal Event & #Giveaway Day #3 ~ Angel of Shadow ~ D.H. Nevins

We've made it to DAY 3 of the Cover Reveal event for D.H. Nevins’ upcoming release, Angel of ShadowHere’s why I’m so excited to be one of the exclusive host blogs for this reveal and giveaway:

First of all, the book cover is STUNNING. You’ll have to trust us on this for now… you’ll know what I mean when you see it!

Secondly, did I mention there’s a giveaway?!?

Lastly, I read Wormwood, the first in this series, a few years back and it was phenomenal! You can read my review here and check out an interview I did with Ms. Nevins here. I've been anxiously awaiting the release of Angel of Shadow (seriously, you can ask Ms. Nevins about how many times I emailed her ;) so I'm thrilled it's finally (almost) here! Speaking of which, you can get a copy of Wormwood for free right now. Wednesday's Fun FactThe Wormwood series has been referred to as “religious” by some and “anti-religious” by others. How confusing! In fact, both arguments are wrong. This series isn’t intending to make ANY statements on religion at all, and is about as religious as the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. So, yeah… not religious. Various mythologies from a range of world religions simply serve as a loose basis for this story.

**Review ~ Angel Bait ~ Tricia Skinner**

Angel-Bait-800 Cover reveal and Promotional
Angel Bait
Angel Assassins #2
by Tricia Skinner
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Release Date: October 31, 2014
Source: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Rating: 4.5 Bookworms

 Synopsis
He's not that kind of angel.
Jarrid is a “Bound One”: half angel, half human, trained from childhood to enforce Heaven’s laws on earth. An assassin with no remorse. And no choice. When he discovers an ancient ritual called Ascension, which might give him a shot at freedom, he can’t resist his lifelong dream. He only needs to find one last Renegade angel and take him down…using a certain woman to flush the angel out of hiding.

She's not what he's expecting.

News reporter Ionie Gifford has no clue an outlaw angel wants her dead, much less why, but she does know one thing: the enigmatic Jarrid, with his penetrating silver eyes and his worship-worthy body, is her ticket to the city's supernatural underworld, where she might finally be able to locate her mother's killer. For that kind of information, she's willing to risk everything...

They can't be together -- but can't keep apart...

Blindsided by Ionie's beauty and tenacity, Jarrid finds the millennia-old glacier around his heart melting. But when he's faced with a choice, will he sacrifice Ionie for freedom from his brutal servitude—or agree to be bound for eternity, to protect the life of the woman he's falling in love with?

From novelist Tricia Skinner comes a story that will have fans of action-packed love stories applauding. Seamlessly combining elements of paranormal romance and gritty urban fantasy, the Angel Assassins series is a heart-pounding spin on angel mythology.

I was once again impressed with the world Ms. Skinner created and the unique ways in which she created an angel mythology all her own.

Angel Bait focuses on Jarrid, the broody of The Bound. He's tasked with solving the mystery of multiple charred corpses. When he learns a Renegade, or a fallen angel, may be involved, he's eager to take on the case as he has a plan which would result in Ascension for himself and his brethren. All he has to do is find his bait and his plan will fall into place.

Ionie, a smart, plucky, and beautiful reporter happens to be said bait. Oh, and she's tenacious, too. She's been on the trail of a killer, reporting on these mysterious deaths. When her boss asks her to work with Jarrid, she sees an opportunity for an exclusive story. What neither she nor Jarrid planned on was falling for one another.

This was an exciting and action-packed installment. There was the suspense of Jarrid drawing out the Renegade as well as Ionie trying not to get caught in the crossfire. I'm still eager to see what the Renegades' end goal is - even though this particular Renegade's aim was shown. And the possibility of involvement at the top - Heaven - has me chomping at the bit for the next in the series. I'm guessing Ascension is what The Bound are looking for and I'm anxious to see how everything will shake out for them as well.

The world building just got better with more supernaturals introduced as well as how they fit into the mythology. And I enjoyed that the story was told in alternating POV between four characters. Although Ionie and Jarrid were the main characters, it was very exciting to see the action from the Renegade's and his lackey's POV.

I'm thrilled to have had the chance to continue in this series so quickly. I'm loving everything about it and can't wait for the next installment.

**OctobeRec Fest Review #1 ~ Angel Kin ~ Tricia Skinner**

Angel Kin (Angel Assassins, #1)Angel Kin
Angel Assassins #1
Release Date: April 28, 2014
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Source: Purchased ebook on Amazon
Rating: 4.5 Bookworms
Goodreads ~ Amazon ~ B&N

Synopsis
While channeling Robin Hood's "steal from the rich and give to the poor" attitude at a local politician's house, ex-con Katie Logan witnesses a forced suicide. Dirty or not, supernatural or not, he didn't deserve to die, especially not by his own hand. But with her record, stepping forward as a witness isn't an option. On the run from the police and the murderer, she turns to The Bound Ones for help.

When a beautiful woman comes to The Bound Ones, half-angel assassin Cain is immediately drawn to her. But when she fingers him as the killer, he can come to only one conclusion. The twin he thought was dead is very much alive...and trying to send him a message. Unfortunately, that message is: "You're next."

It's a race against time as Cain fights to save the woman he's falling in love with before his brother Abel destroys them both.

Whoa. The beginning of Angel Kin immediately drew me into this story. It was a great way to introduce our heroine, Katie, and the crux of the plot. I'm a sucker for angel stories, so I was drawn into this new world wondering what Heaven and Hell were up to.

Katie is the only girl in her firefighting family and a black sheep by her own admission. She got in trouble for having sticky fingers. But I quite enjoyed that Skinner made her a 'noble' thief. Katie was, after all, trying to get some loot to sell in order to save her friends. She is an extremely loyal and caring woman, which are traits Cain find very appealing.

Katie finds herself enmeshed in the latest battle between good and evil, after witnessing a murder. She can't go to the police because the reason she was in the position to witness it would cause her some trouble, so her brother takes her to The Bound Ones. They promise to keep her safe but sparks really fly when Katie meets Cain - partially because of an attraction and partially because he looks exactly like the murderer.

Cain is one of The Bound Ones, a Nephilim whose powers have been bound. He and the three other Nephilim, all have different powers, which they refer to as their Grace. They use these gifts to protect innocents. Cain has kept his emotions locked down for centuries, never allowing anyone, outside of his brethren, in. Katie, however, brings out his possessive and protective instincts unlike no one else ever has.

Ms. Skinner did a great job of world building, weaving biblical mythology - angels, Nephilim, and even Cain and Abel - with human and Others - demons, lycans, shifters, and vampires. It was fascinating to see how they lived among one another and fought for political dominance as part of the proverbial battle between Heaven and Hell. The history Skinner built around the Nephilim and The Bound Ones is unique and I quite enjoyed it. The explanation of the powers, or Grace, how it manifests, was interesting as well.

Angel Kin revolves around trying to find Abel, before it's too late, and understanding why he's not found Cain before. Of course, Abel's actions are part of a bigger agenda - that of the Renegades, or the surviving Fallen Angels, and others who've joined their fight against the Directorate, or Heaven.

In all, I'm so happy with this recommendation. With great world building and compelling characters, action, and a touch of romance, Angel Kin was an exciting start to the series. The only issue I had was with the pacing. I thought the beginning, despite a whopper of an opening scene, was a bit slow. But I'm eager for what promises to be the intriguing and possibly gruesome battle that is brewing between Heaven and Hell. I'm also eager to learn more about each of the other Bound Ones as the series continues, as well as what the Renegades are after and what the Directorate and Heaven intended when they started this.

**Author Spotlight, Interview & Giveaway ~ Wormwood ~ Danielle Nevins**

Earlier this year, I read and reviewed D.H. Nevins' Wormwood. If you missed my review, you can read it here. I really enjoyed Wormwood, so I asked Ms. Nevins if I could interview her. Thankfully, she agreed. Recently, Ms. Nevins had some exciting happenings around Wormwood. She had the talented cover artist, Derek Murphy, ask if she'd like to see some designs he'd been inspired to create after reading Wormwood. Now, Wormwood has a new cover (I liked the original cover but I have to say this new cover is much more representative of the story) and the sequel, Angel of Shadow, has a lovely cover as well. Ms. Nevins also had a musician from the band Orca Flights approach her with a song he'd written specifically for the book. It's called Leap of Faith. So along with my interview with D.H., I'm going to share Wormwood's new cover and Leap of Faith for your enjoyment. :) And because I think this is a fantastic read, I'm also going a giveaway. Enjoy!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in the Toronto area, but roughly 10 years ago, resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t a city person. So my husband and I moved into a log house in the woods—which is pretty much in the
middle of nowhere. We love it! We don’t have kids, but instead share our house with two cats. Now I don’t know where they got this idea, but they both act like they own the place.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I’m a teacher at a small, rural elementary school. The work keeps me very busy, but it’s gratifying. When I have some extra time—and I’m not writing—I tend to gravitate towards activities that get my
blood pumping: mainly hiking, canoeing, scuba diving and riding around on my motorcycle (which I’ve named Grendel). I’ve also tried white water rafting, hang gliding, sky diving, winter camping
(which was WAY too cold!) and zip lining. But that one thing that tugs at my soul more than anything else is travel, and true to that, my husband and I have dragged our backpacks around the world
twice.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

Diana Gabaldon, Jean Auel and Stephen King have all influenced me. The first two authors I mentioned have what I consider to be some of the best voices in writing, and they have both created very strong female protagonists in their books. As for Stephen King, I have always been in awe of the multi-faceted worlds and characters he’s created.

On to questions about Wormwood...

I loved Wormwood. Why do you think it resonates with readers?

First of all, thank you! I’m incredibly flattered by your question. However, I must admit it’s difficult to answer. Naturally, any writer would hope their book would resonate with readers. It helps that most of us write books we’d want to read ourselves and then hope that our readers have the same tastes we do. Perhaps in this case, I luckily enjoy the same sorts of stories as many other readers.

When I read, I need strong, visual imagery and characters who are not only believable, but likeable enough that I’m happy to throw myself into their world and experience it through their eyes. On top of that, I’m an action junkie, a romantic, a fan of conflict in writing and absolutely need to be surprised by plot twists. With all these elements in mind, I knew I had some work ahead of me if I was to pull this off. So knowing what I needed to do, I spent a year mapping out the story and scribbling extensive notes on the characters before I wrote a single word of Wormwood. Is this why it
resonates with readers? I honestly don’t know. In the end, all I can say for certain is I wrote a story I would love to read myself.

Did you always intend this story to continue?

No. In fact, in an early incarnation of the plot, I killed off the main character, Kali. But realizing that ending was a little too dark, I changed it. Within this change, I left it open for a possible sequel and by doing so, fell in love with some of the possibilities! Before Wormwood was finished, I had already plotted out my ideas for a trilogy.

Why did you choose this particular mythology and was it challenging weaving a story around it?

There are already innumerable apocalyptic scenarios that include viruses, natural disasters, aliens, nuclear war, rebelling technology and even zombies, and I knew if I wanted to write something fresh, I’d have to go a different route. When I started looking into religious mythologies, I was fascinated. There are detailed apocalyptic scenarios within literature from a wide range of religions, from Modern Christian to Hindu to Ancient Babylonian. I took various elements from many different religions, including some of the names of my characters—names which I wrote to have significant meaning within the story. Fortunately, it was time consuming but not particularly challenging. If anything, it enthralled me.

I liked that you made the Nephilim fallible. Why did you decide to do that?

Thanks! I got the idea from my husband, actually, and built the entire story around this first seed of discussion. Very early on, when I established that I wanted to base the apocalypse on a weaving of
religious mythologies, my husband said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if this angel had to do it—had to destroy the Earth—but he was incredibly conflicted and tormented about it?” Naturally, my answer was a resounding, “Yes!” So from that, I built the character, Tiamat. The other Nephilim were written to have very human emotions and weaknesses as well. It made them far more real for me.

Is Tiamat's grief over what he has to do part of that fallibility?

Absolutely. It is also his strength.

I love that Kali is such a strong heroine. Was it important to you that she be that way?

I don’t think I could have written her any other way. I would have been bored composing a story about a character who was weak-willed, selfish or whiney, and probably wouldn’t have finished
writing the book! No, she needed to be strong in order to drive both the story and the author!

Thanks, D.H.!!
