Synopsis
DEAD HOPE is the new thriller by Nicky Wells, bringing you a delicious cocktail of crime, suspense, and romance.

Cat Hope doesn't want to go to prison. She needs a job, and she needs it fast; judge's orders.

Kay Mahon, office worker by day and hacker by night, is on the run from a past life that he'd rather not remember.

When their paths cross, they begin to investigate the truth behind the deaths of Cat's parents, the successful rock star couple Jackie and Adam Hope. Little do they know that their quest is putting Cat in grave danger.

I had the privilege of reading Dead Hope early and while I've read Wells before, this was something different. Wells took a new path with Dead Hope - that being the path of a thriller - and she delivered the goods. Dead Hope is compelling with great character development and although you know whodunit throughout, she keeps you turning the pages needing to see how it all shakes out.

Cat Hope is the daughter of a famed rock duo, one who has it all with, the exception of her parents who died tragically, and she's found herself in a bit of trouble. Her punishment, as strange as it is, is to be relegated to a new life - as a "normal" person. That being having no access to her trust fun - working for a living.

Cat starts out as a self-centered, spoiled woman - Wells seems to have a talent for creating heroines that have to win us over - but over the course of the story, she grows emotionally and it was a delight to witness even if learning things about her childhood - the things that caused her to be how she was - were troubling.

Cat meets Kay in her new job and as their friendship blossoms, they come to find they have some things in common in their childhood. This brings about Cat and Kay investigating Cat's parents deaths, opening a whole new can of worms.

The character growth wasn't limited to Cat although she grew the most. Kay, a very smart and talented man, having skills useful to investigating on the sly, was also rather prickly - not allowing anyone in...that is no one until Cat.

Wells did a fine job in creating suspense throughout - what would happen? Would Cat and Kay get caught? Everything flowed together naturally, keeping the pace even, despite knowing who the villain was. There were a few instances where my suspension of disbelief was strained but all-in-all everything worked. There was, of course, a romantic element - Wells didn't completely ditch her roots. And the romance between Cat and Kay was sweet, building naturally from their friendship.

I was rather impressed with Wells' foray into suspense writing. The nods to Bourne and other was a nice touch. Wells laid a nice foundation, used her skills in crafting a good story with characters I became invested in, and succeeded in delivering a thriller worth reading.

Question: You’ve been a bit quiet this past year or so. What’s been happening? Where have you been?

Nicky: After the release of my last novel, the romantic comedy “Seven Years Bad Sex,” I decided to take a little breather and to allow myself some time to think about where I was going to go next, writing-wise. I took a whole six months off, and I spent that time with family and decorating a part of our house. Wouldn’t you know it, six months flew by, and I found myself brimming with ideas for not one but several books, and I got busy writing and planning and writing again.

Question: Tell us about DEAD HOPE. How did you come up with the idea?

Nicky: DEAD HOPE was born with the working title of “Deep Cover”. When the idea came to me, I was still planning to write a romance featuring rock stars, and the key nugget is: what would happen if you transplanted a world-famous rock star into an office job like you and me might hold down? Moreover, what would happen if you removed that rock star from their natural habitat, the glittering metropolis, and placed them into a sleepy rural town? Romantic and comedy ideas flowed galore.

Question: So, DEAD HOPE was going to be a romantic comedy?

Nicky: A romantic comedy-slash- suspense, yes. That was the plan.

Question: How did you get from romantic comedy-slash- suspense to thriller? That’s quite a leap.

Nicky: It might look that way, but it was actually a gradual progression. I’m an OCD planner. I can’t write if I haven’t got the book planned out in minute detail, so I sat down and started weaving all my wonderful ideas together. But there was one central question I couldn’t answer: Why. Why would this whole thing happen? What would bring the rock star to the office job in the middle of nowhere?

Question: And?

Nicky: I did a spider map of all the possible scenarios that could have got the rock star into his unusual circumstances, and I got a bit carried away. I allowed myself to really think out of the box, and suddenly one scenario jumped out at me that turned the plot entirely on its head. Funny how a small idea can prompt a cataclysmic change! My hero turned into a heroine, and while she’s the daughter of a famous rock star couple, she isn’t a celebrity in her own right. But at that point, the romance theme was still dominant.

Question: What happened next?

Nicky: I finished planning and started writing. And as soon as I started writing, the thriller and crime ideas just took off. This baby wanted to be something completely different from what I had envisaged, so I had to abandon writing and re-plan. I went deep on the logistics of my core crime, my mystery, and I learned quite a bit about court and police procedures and forensics, more so than is evident in the story but lots of stuff that’ll come in handy in my next stories. In this way, DEAD HOPE turned from a romantic suspense into a crime thriller with a strong romance subplot.

Question: But there is still some romance?

Nicky: There is still some romance.

Question: What about blood and gore?

Nicky: That, not so much. I don’t like blood and gore and while there is some—it is a crime story, after all—the novel is all about solving the mystery. I guess I’m trying to follow in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton, not that I could ever hope to aspire to match their genius.

Question: Go on then, sell it to me. What’s DEAD HOPE all about?

Nicky: All right… here goes the elevator pitch!

A unique and delicious cocktail of crime, suspense and romance, “DEAD HOPE” is a compulsive page turner.

Cat Hope doesn’t want to go to prison. Kay Mahon is on the run from a past life that he’d rather not remember. When their paths cross, they begin to investigate the truth behind the deaths of Cat’s parents, the successful rock star couple Jackie and Adam Hope. Little do they know that their quest is putting Cat in grave danger...

Synopsis
One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after...

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain't over 'til it's over or, in this case...it ain't over 'til the newlyweds sing.

Both witty and poignant in equal measure, 7 Years Bad Sex is a gem!

Alex and Casey make up half the band, Blue Heart. And they own each others' hearts. The story begins at the wedding - a beautiful affair. However, once their honeymoon begins they realize they have a problem...they seem to be having issues getting completely physical.

7 Years Bad Sex chronicles Alex and Casey's start to married life and their trials in intimacy. While neither believes in such things as curses, it's hard to deny that something wonky is going on. They try everything, and I do mean everything, to make it to the finish line. Luckily, they have a deep and abiding love because the lack of release keeps them both on the verge of blowing.

Wells cleverly relates this tale of woe with with both humor and compassion. I admired their courage and their mutual respect. I also admired the love and deep bond between Alex and Casey and I was anxious for them to reverse the curse. They were fortunate to have supportive friends and to have met and made a few new ones. It eased their struggle. The lengths this couple had to go to would push some over the edge. Alex and Casey, though, they fought hard and so deserved their HEA.

Hi Nicky! Thanks for stopping by!

I laughed over your *note* about 7 Years Bad Sex being a pure work of fiction - that it didn't happen to you. ;) Where did this idea come from?

No, it definitely didn't happen to me. If it had, I'd have had to have published it under a pen name, LOL!
The idea came to me at the awards dinner at the Festival of Romance in 2013.  I was at a table with nine other authors. We were all toasting each other and the award winners, and suddenly my table neighbour nudged me and said, "you didn't make eye contact with me while we were toasting, that's seven years bad sex for you." Of course I laughed. What else could I do? I'd never even heard about the superstition, but he went on to explain it in great detail. And there it was in my head, the complete idea, quite suddenly. What if you took a couple of newlyweds and inflicted that curse on them?
Obviously that was in 2013, so I let the idea stew for quite some time; plus I had "Fallen for Rock" and "Fairy Tale in New York" in my writing 'queue' at that point. But at long last, in January of this year, I sat down and wrote the whole thing in about nine weeks. It was an awesome (and quite funny!) experience!

Some couples might not make it through the difficulties Alex and Casey endured. What do you think it is about their relationship that makes them so strong?

Real love and a great sense of humour. Oh, and rock music. And their friends!
But seriously, I wanted to explore the whole idea of marriage, love, and sex. Are they ependent on each other? What if you take one away? As Casey and Alex have to acknowledge several times in the story, everyone has needs--but how do you cope if those needs can't be met? Obviously we're not expecting a marriage to be fireworks for all eternity, but what if the physical romance fizzles out completely? What do you do?
Alex and Casey have love and a strong friendship that preceded their relationship. When the sex goes wrong, they are able to laugh it off to begin with. It's only later, when there's no seeming way out, that the stress begins to wear them down. And yes, there's a real crisis point towards the end that gets resolved in perhaps a slightly unorthodox manner... but it gets them through, doesn't it?  So love, friendship, and laughter. And rock music!

I saw you did some research into British law regarding a few things about Alex and Casey's story...oh, and oysters! ;) It made me wonder whether there was any truth to the myth of the 7 Years Bad Sex curse?

Great question. It's a superstition held in many parts of Europe. Actress Keira Knightley (she of Pirates in the Caribbean) apparently believes in it. Is there any truth to it? *shrugs* I really couldn't say. Personally, I'm not superstitious by nature. I don't believe that breaking a mirror gives you seven years bad luck. I don't cross the road  when I see a black cat or throw salt over my shoulder to ward off evil. And obviously I didn't get afflicted by seven years bad sex after my own toasting faux pas two years ago.
I couldn't find any information on the origins of this superstition... So let's agree it's a myth and a superstition, but it makes for a great story!

Will be see any more of Alex, Casey, and their gang?

Ah. Hm.
You see, technically, "7 Years Bad Sex" was intended as a standalone. But you know the ending, right? So the obvious sequel would have to be "7 Years NO Sex" for reasons that you might guess, and that your readers can find out  about at the end of the book.
Have I written it yet? No. But I just might... *winks*

I really enjoyed their story, Nicky! I'm glad you put humor in there, otherwise it would have been really sad! *ha*

Thanks, Brandee! It was quite a different thing for me to write, and a bit of a challenge at times. I didn't want it to be sordid and a jumbled collection of random sex scenes, because that really wasn't the point... But obviously I had to put some kind of suggestion and action in there. LOL! Glad you enjoyed it! XX

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.

How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Fairy Tale in New York was a fairy tale - truly. It was sweet and magical...the perfect read to fill you with the holiday spirit!

I was thrilled to rejoin Jude and Carrie, whom I'd met in Spirits of Christmas, along with their baby, Maya. I'd been hoping Ms. Wells would continue their story and I'm thrilled she did.

When I first met Jude, he was learning the error of his ways. Now, just finishing a successful tour with his band, the Blood Roses, he and his girlfriend, Carrie, find themselves in New York waiting to go home for the holidays. Only while there, they find themselves in a position to offer a kind gesture to a stranger in need. It seems good fortune in that the stranger, a Mr. Whyte, has accommodations for them for the night. However, the next day, Christmas Eve, Mother Nature throws a monkey wrench into the plans with a snow storm that effectively shuts down New York.

What happens next, over the course, of two days, is heartwarming, fateful, and will renew your faith in humanity. The kindness and generosity shown to Jude, Carrie, and Maya, is endearing. And that Jude is humble enough to take it, and pay it forward, as it were, was lovely.

Fairy Tale in New York was such a charming read. It was uplifting and definitely put some holiday spirit in my soul.

Synopsis
‘A thrilling and delicious story of love and self-discovery woven around a broken romance that will make you turn page after page and cheer to the end.’

Love, life, loyalties. Nothing stays the same when Emily gets drawn into the world of rock.

Glossy and sophisticated professional high-flyer Emily has no time for nonsense such as the rock music her ex-boyfriend Nate adored so much. Yet when she unexpectedly comes into possession of VIP
tickets—access all areas—for new rock band phenomenon, MonX, she can’t resist the temptation.

The fateful gig turns into more than one night, and Emily finds herself strangely drawn to this new and unfamiliar glittery world. However, only weeks later, MonX and her own universe fall apart with devastating consequences for all. When MonX lead singer Mike appeals for her help, she reluctantly embraces a new opportunity. But she soon discovers that while she may be a rock chick after all, a groupie she is not... Or is she?

Just exactly where do her loyalties lie? And what direction will her life take now that she’s left behind everything she treasured?

Warning! Fallen for Rock contains some explicit content and strong language that may not be suitable for readers under eighteen years of age.

Fallen for Rock was such an entertaining read. Watching as Emily grew and matured was fascinating. And having a front row seat to witnessing the birth of a band? Awesome!

Emily Trenden is a brilliant career woman. She makes difficult yet smart decisions daily in her job at an investment bank. She didn't, she now realizes, make a smart decision in dumping her boyfriend. And she's also realized her focus on her career has left her rather lonely.

Enter Mike Loud and MonX. Emily - or rather her ex, Nate - won tickets to see the phenomenal new band, MonX. There are only a couple of problems - no Nate and Emily has this little issue of not liking rock 'n roll. At all. She attends the concert in an effort to win back Nate, and ends up meeting Mike. Mike Loud is the lead singer of MonX. He's an incredible musician and a charming, kind man, as Emily soon learns. And that's not all he teaches her. The fallout surrounding events in both their lives causes Emily and Mike to enter into a partnership. It's this partnership and spending much time with Mike that helps Emily learn a lot about herself, about love, and about the value of friendship.

Although Nate isn't actually present for most of the book, Emily really pines for him. He's described as a nice buy but I couldn't help rooting for Mike as I got to know him much better.

The journey Emily embarks on towards love, friendship, and fulfillment was captivating. She learns what's truly important to her. She finds her called. And she finds love. Seeing her blossom into the completely different woman - one who used the skill set she'd honed in a unfulfilling career AND found she adored rock music - was compelling.

Fallen for Rock was fun. But it also touched on some deeper topics. Ms. Wells does an excellent job of creating engaging characters along with a charming story. I don't know that we'll see more from Fallen for Rock but I wouldn't complain about getting more of Mike. ;)

Hi Nicky! Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself?

HI Brandee! Thanks for inviting me on your lovely blog today. My name is Nicky Wells, and I’m addicted to rock stars. I can’t help it. I have an incurable ‘thing’ for rock musicians. They just ‘do it’ for me. Bad boys and golden voices, tough men with long hair and soft hearts.... *swoon* That’s why I write the books I do. Particular faves include Jon Bon Jovi and Joey Tempest. I’ve recently discovered Myles Kennedy too!

What do you do when you're not writing?

When I’m not lusting after rock stars or writing books about young women who lust after rock stars, I’m a wife, a mother of two boys, a lobster eater and pizza lover, a cook, a trained teaching assistant, an occasional knitter, and a radio presenter at Siren 107.3 FM. I’ve got my own show now, too, which is called Books Rock!, and airs at 11 am on every third Saturday. Just saying!

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either while growing up or as an adult?

Where to start? I usually cite Enid Blyton at this point because she acquainted me with the delights of addictive serial reading. I remember picking up Famous Five books from the bookstore and the library from about Year 2 in primary school. I had to keep it a secret from the teacher because we had been told not to ‘work ahead’ in our official class reading book, but I’d finished the whole thing and got bored, so I started reading ‘proper’ books! I loved the feeling of getting immersed into someone else’s world, into adventures and excitement. Soon I branched out into reading children’s fantasy and sci-fi too and I read everything in my local library. So yes, I’d have to put the fault for my love for reading at Enid Blyton’s feet!

Why are readers going to love Fallen for Rock?

Fallen for Rock has something for (almost) everyone. It has romance and glamour, some hot scenes, and it is gritty and edgy in places and feels very real. I like to write books that are within the realm of the possible even though they feature illustrious, famous men. It’ll appeal to people who love their rock stars, but also to folks who’re not necessarily into rock but attracted to modern romantic fairy tales.

Fallen for Rock is a steamy, dreamy and realistic romance between a rock star and an ordinary mortal. At the same time, it’s a story of complete self transformation, carrying the message that your life can be whatever you want it to be. And last but not least, it’ll make you feel good when it’s finished, and that’s a promise!

Is anything in the book based on real life experiences or is it all purely imagination?

Fallen for Rock is purely a product of my imagination. However, that’s not to say that I didn’t do my research about the rock music industry and, more specifically for this book, about music publicity.

To the extent that my writing was informed by the research, it is based on real-life experience, if not necessarily my own.

Inevitably, the characters may have traits borrowed from real people I know or have observed, and they may experience one or few events that may or may not have happened to me. But nothing and no one is based on any one real life person or event. Rather, I take fragments of reality, re-cast them, repurpose them to suit my need, and mix them all together in a new combination.

Why rock 'n roll? What is it about music that makes you want to write about it?

I’ve already confessed to my ‘thing’ for rock musicians, so let me expand on that a little here. I am endlessly fascinated by the rock music industry. I love the rush of excitement that a rock gig brings, the power of the music to take you out of your everyday life.

Apart from experiencing rock gigs myself—in front of the stage mostly, but a few from behind the scenes—I’ve watched every rock movie—fictional or autobiographical—I could lay my hands on and read a stack of biographies to boot. The rock industry provides a fabulous setting for romantic novels, comedies and suspense thrillers alike, and it helps elevate the excitement of an ‘ordinary’ romance to another level altogether. The rock star injects an element of the fairy tale into the story—you know, the poor girl and the prince, today’s twenty-something single girl and the rock star, there’s a similar magic here. It’s a rich, fabulous and never-ending source of inspiration, and I have many more books up my sleeve yet.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

That’s a tough question, and I had to go away and have a cup of tea to contemplate it because I enjoyed the entire story from start to finish—from Emily’s initial disdain to her conversion to the tour and everything that happens afterwards. But there’s one scene that sticks out, now that you’ve prompted me. I do remember giving Emily a series of high-fives when she’s out talent scouting with Mike, and she wraps the hot-shot manager around her little finger. I hadn’t actually planned that scene in great detail at all. She was just kind of going to meet him in passing, but Emily had other ideas, and I found her putting in an elaborate subterfuge to arouse Iron Dave’s interest, get him to approach her (as opposed to the other way round), and really ‘own’ the conversation. I didn’t know she had it in her, and I was ever so proud. This was a really, really fun scene to write.

**I really enjoyed watching Emily 'do her thing' in this scene as well!**

What project are you working on now?

Lol, just one? I’ve got three in the queue, and that’s just the ones that have reached the planning stage! But for now, here’s the blurb of my Christmas novella, which is fully written and due for release in October or November 2014. While it is a sequel to last year’s ‘Spirits of Christmas’, it is also very much designed to be read as a standalone.

Fairy Tale in New York

When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet...

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. Today a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie and baby Maya are stuck.

How do you celebrate Christmas far from home, with no place to stay, no food, and no presents?

Join Jude, Carrie and Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Thanks again for inviting me to your blog today, Brandee, it’s such a pleasure to be here. I hope your readers enjoyed meeting me, and I’ll pop back again to answer any questions. Meanwhile... rock on!

But she soon discovers that while she may be a rock chick after all, a groupie she is not… Or is she?

Just exactly where do her loyalties lie? And what direction will her life take now that she’s left behind everything she treasured?
