I've been watching her for awhile. She's beautiful. And she's funny but she's also smart. I can tell. She seems like the kind of woman I could connect with. She intrigued me from the start but I had to be ready before making contact. I'm not sure I'm ready but it's time. I don't want to wait any longer. I'm quite nervous. I've never done this sort of thing before. What will she think? Will she like what I have to say? Will she care? Will she like...me? I bite my lip and wring my hands in anxiety. I take a deep breath. I have to be brave. I have to pluck up the courage or I'll never know. Right? Right. Another deep breath. And I push the button.

This challenge is pretty straight forward - read three romantic suspense books this next week, one book that you've bought, one you've borrowed - either from the library or a friend, and one you've received for free - either a gift, or an ARC.

We both love romantic suspense, because there is a little bit of angst to go with the romance, and sometimes, the suspense parts are so good we just can't wait to flip to the next page. Plus, having romance in those books just makes everything a bit more bearable, are we right? 

And since we love our romantic suspense, we have something we hope will be fun for y'all. It's a little romantic and a bit suspenseful. Starting tomorrow, we'll give y'all a bit of a story leading up to something we have in the works...and if you can guess what that something is, you get an extra entry in the giveaway.

Travel by the Book ~ Rock Stars, Surf and Second Chances/Ocean Beach

Welcome to Travel by the Book. I know for most of us, reading is an escape. One of the things I love about reading it getting to travel. And I'm sure I'm not the only reader who has wished to take a trip inspired by a place I read about in a book. I've been fortunate in that my Hubs is kind enough to indulge me and take me to said places. This is where I share those vacations that were inspired by a book.

***UPDATE***

So, I know you haven't seen a Travel by the Book post in quite a long while. This is mostly because I wasn't thinking ahead when I started doing these posts and after ONE year, I'd run out of places I'd traveled to because of a book! LOL But I got to thinking about how to resurrect this feature and I decided to continue sharing these posts - quarterly? - and switch it up a tiny bit when necessary. 

I hope you'll enjoy these posts!

***The Book***

You may have recently read my review of Michelle Mankin's Oceanside. I've been reading Ms. Mankin since 2012 and there's a lot to love about her stories. Her characters are always well drawn, the romance is always compelling and swoon-worthy, her stories always deal with a relevant social issue, and she does an incredible job at conveying the look and feel of her setting. From the gritty streets of Seattle (yes, they do exist) to the honky-tonk feel of Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth to the eccentric town of Ocean Beach, she's continually made me feel as though I've been there. So when I got the opportunity to travel to Ocean Beach to tour the locations and establishments that inspired Ms. Mankin's Rock Stars, Surf and Second Chances series there was no way I was going to pass it up! 

This series revolves around a group of guys who grew up in Ocean Beach, love surfing, and also happened to be the band known as The Dirt Dogs. I loved the Ms. Mankin gave each of the couples a unique backstory, compelling stories with tragedies and triumphs, and romances I believed in. This group of characters is so well developed and feel so genuine - and part of the genuineness is due to Ms. Mankin making their environment so realistic.

***The Travel***

My friend, Denise, who frequently travels to book event locales with me, was my traveling companion for this trip. We stayed at the Ocean Beach Motel and y'all, the beach was right across the street! We got to see the beach, surfers and surf shops, restaurants, buildings, and houses that served as inspiration as well as the murals that are all over the town on the sides of buildings and in alley-ways. Here are a few photos:

This is the bar that inspired The Deck Bar featured in all the books.

This is the house that served as inspiration for Ramon's house in Riptide.

There were tons of surfers out on this day. The Ocean Beach pier is in the background.

I took lots of pictures of the various murals around town but decided to feature this one because of the surfers. =)

This is the sub-pump structure where Fanny and her sister Hollie were living in Oceanside.

The building you see here is the building where Ash makes his home as well as the Dirt Dogs' recording company, Outside.

It was such a treat to get to spend time with the Misters and their Missuses - all together at one time, in one place. And no one was in any real danger if you didn't count the pigs...or the kittens...or the stallion...or those island kids! LOL Seriously though, Mr. & Mrs. was a lot of fun.

It's been almost a year since the Misters dealt with all that Mister business and now they're all getting down to the business of living. Of course, they want to really start things with a wedding. And if one Mister is going to do it, they all will. Getting to see what everyone is up to now was a pleasure. I mean, each of the couples came together under strenuous times so it was nice to see them just be "normal" - worrying about being couples and/or parents, etc. I was also a joy to see the camaraderie between them all - the family they've created outside of family, how they are all there for one another. And then there were the surprises. Naturally, Huss had to throw a few twists in and for these particular ones, I'll always be grateful.

Mr. & Mrs. was the pretty, sparkly bow tying up an already fantastic series.

Thursday's Fun Fact: I’m extremely lucky to have a stunning office overlooking a lake, with a cherry desk and cherry bookshelf (complete with a rolling library ladder) that my father built for me. Because he’s AWESOME! However, I wrote most of Angel of Shadow on my laptop while sitting on my couch. Go figure!

Yet again, Lain delivers a fell good story about finding yourself and embracing all you discover!

We've all done it. Pretended to like or dislike something hoping to increase our odds of getting someone's approval or catch their eye. However, even if you earn that approval or catch that eye, eventually things fall apart because we can only pretend for so long, right? That's exactly what happened with JJ and Ryan.

JJ LaRousse is 6' 4" of lean muscle, sparkling wit, and fluttering hands. He's seriously a sweetheart and he's worked hard to accept who he is. But upon learning hunky Ryan Star prefers "manly" men, JJ sets about pretending to be just that.

Ryan Star is a recent transplant to Laguna via NYC. He works hard and is good at his job but he experienced a situation at work in New York that has him less that willing to live out in his new job. Meeting JJ, this tall, delicious guy who looks like he could be a football player makes him want a relationship. They'll just have to keep things on the down-low.

Lain deftly combines humor, character development, action, and a relevant social message and creates an engaging story. From page one, I could feel the tension in JJ's body when he got wound up and his hands started fluttering. I delighted in watching JJ and Ryan fall for one another. And even though JJ was projecting a false image of himself, he was still himself at the most elemental levels. I also though it ironic that Ryan balked at finding out JJ didn't like football and beer because he was living closeted and that in and of itself is a for of pretending to be something you're not, right?

At any rate, I was entertained by their story, rooting for them all the way, and cheering in the end.

Wednesday's Fun Fact: The Wormwood series has been referred to as “religious” by some and “anti-religious” by others. How confusing! In fact, both arguments are wrong. This series isn’t intending to make ANY statements on religion at all, and is about as religious as the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. So, yeah… not religious. Various mythologies from a range of world religions simply serve as a loose basis for this story.

Tuesday's Fun Fact: One of D.H. Nevins’ Angel of Shadow beta readers contacted her a short time ago with this unbelievable screenshot of an online scrabble game she was playing. Holy smokes!!! It seems to me like this is a crazy coincidence.
The first word was "saved". Then look at the tiles she has left. It spells the very unusual name of one of the main protagonists, Tiamat. Too cool!

Synopsis
