Red & Wolfe: Part 1 by Ella James
Contemporary
Erotica 35 Pages

When Sarah "Red" Ryder loses her job as an art critic for a Boston newspaper, she's brokenhearted. Worse than that? She's broke. Her boyfriend recently left her - for a tatted-up hottie with a dick - so she's stuck paying her hefty apartment rent alone. After two months unemployed, there's no money left. With no immediate family to turn to, Red reaches out to her estranged grandmother, a reclusive writer living on an island off the coast of Charleston. Several days later, Red receives $30,000 and an invitation to visit.

James Wolfe is not Red's grandmother. But he beckons her. Red has the ability to give him something he needs. He won't take "no" for an answer, and he doesn't mind screwing her over. He lost his conscience six years ago, when he was tried for the murder of his wife. Since then, life is about him - and the paintings he does under the mysterious pseudonym "W."

Wolfe needs the island to keep painting. To live his life away from prying eyes. To keep up the anonymity of "W."

Once he sees Red, he finds that he needs her, too. And Wolfe will have her.
Any way he can.

**That's What HE Said ~ #10**

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies @Chapter Break. Here's the deal: every Thursday, post a line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. Keep in mind, these are direct quotes from dialog in the books. The quote doesn't have to be romantic - just something our hunky hero said to his lucky lady. Be sure to link up over at Chapter Break as well.

This week, since I'm kinda showcasing two books, I'm cheating and picking my That's What He Said from both.

**Blitz & Giveaway ~ Come Back ~ JA Huss**

Come Back (Dirty,  Dark, And Deadly #2)
by JA Huss
Genre: Erotic Suspense
Release Date: July 21, 2014

Synopsis
“Secrets keep the darkness alive,” Harper tells me. But that’s not how I see it at all. Secrets keep me alive. The truth is overrated. Honesty is never the best policy. And when your job involves killing the most dangerous men on earth, knowing more than you should, will get you killed.

"Death is a business deal," I tell her back. And I make that deal every chance I get. Secrets are currency in my world. I pay my debts with them. I feed on them. They ground me in the present and they promise me a future.

But Harper Tate is everything I've ever wanted. She is my promise, she is my past, she is my future. She can be mine. She will be mine. All I have to do is complete the mission.

There's just one problem.

I have no idea what it is.

Merc picks up on the second ring too. I love consistency. "Jasus fucking Christ, where the hell have you been?"

"Traveling. You think I have hidden wormholes I can pop in and out of to get places or what?"

"Yeah, well, Twifter is not happy, asshole."

"Twifter can kiss my ass. None of that shit this morning was me. But anyway, we're here. Thanks for the beer." I take a swig and let out a long, "Ahhh," trying to piss off Merc, but that's when I see the Smurf watching me from the jail cell up on the foyer terrace. "Call you later," I say, and then I press end on the phone. "What the fuck you doing up there?"

"Who the hell were you talking to?" she snarls back.

"Merc." I hold up my beer and give her a pretend cheers.

"Obviously that phone call was Merc. Before Merc, who the hell were you talking to?"

"My secretary." She stares at me and them gets up and walks to the jail cell door. That little shit was sleeping up in that jail cell. What a freak. "Why?" I ask her. "You got a problem with me making calls?"

She walks towards the steps and stops at the top. She's all sweaty and flushed from the heat, and her hair is still wet from her earlier shower. The scratches from the thorn run-in this morning are still there, but now that the dried blood has been properly washed away, they are not so bad. She looks better and worse all at the same time. She looks unstable.

"When you make a call to an associate from a phone that's supposedly not secure, a phone that had some cryptic message you tried to blame on me, then year. I have a big fucking problem."

"Watch your fucking mouth around me, kid. Or I'll smack the shit out of it."

She reaches behind her and pulls out a gun and points it at me. "Is that right?"

"You better shoot me right the fuck now. Because if you don't, I'll kill you just for pointing that weapon at me."

She reevaluates her target and decides on a spot above my head. Smurfette is clever. "Who were you talking to?"

I eye the diameter of the chamber on her weapon and guesstimate .40. "You sure you can handle that thing? It's got a nice kick to it. And if you miss me, I won't miss you."

"I don't miss. And I've been shooting this Glock for a while now. So I'll happily take my chances. Now, who were you talking to?"

"I already told you. My secretary, checking for messages. And Merc, returning a call."

"You were checking in. Who's running this operation?"

"I thought you knew?"

She thinks about this for a few seconds. Gives it some consideration before she answers. "I know who I'm working for. I know who sent you to get me. And I don't think we're on the same side anymore."

"That's too bad then," I tell her with a shrug of my shoulders. "I was just beginning to like you. I was starting to hope I wouldn't have to kill you."
"Funny," she says with a coolness that sends a chill up my arm. "I was thinking the same thing."

**Sidekick Showcase ~ #49**

Sidekick Showcase (previously known as Sidekick Saturday) is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type

• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

**********************************
Sorry, I've sucked this month at getting my Sidekick posts done. It's really sad considering I suggested some of the themes. :) Hopefully, this firecracker of a character will make up for my slacking.

July's theme ~ Patriot, Red-head, or Firecracker

My my pick this week:
Betsy
from Robyn Jones' Touched Girl Series

Betsy is Anna's 'little' cousin, as Anna calls her. But Betsy is big in personality. She's a pistol, full of piss and vinegar. She always has a snarky comeback or comment. It has to be hard to have a particular social standing at school only to have your cousin arrive to mess things up with her strange twirling and touching. But she's loyal and she loves Anna with her whole heart.

"The short one let out an annoyed sigh and walked into the house. 'She's still weird as ever.'"
-Betsy, Soul Walker

"No more comas, Anna. I didn't like that at all. Even Betsy was worried."
"Was not. Sleep, talk, walk, stand too close to me, who cares?"
-Sara and Betsy, Soul Walker

"So, who were the brooding hotties in Ell's driveway?"
"Peter's cousins."
"Good bloodline."
-Betsy and Anna, Soul Walker

"Um, excuse me. Wives are slapping their husbands, and teenage boys are tossing out their Playboys. Do you think you could not do this crazy hose-down-the-hot-body scene right here on Ella's front lawn?"
-Betsy to Anna, Soul Walker

"Fine, don't chat up the student body. You're eating with us at lunch. I'm not taking twirling for an answer."
-Betsy to Anna, Soul Bender

"I'll work my way up to the whole Ted/porch thing because I think you broke my brain, weird girl."
-Betsy to Anna, Soul Bender

"Yes, Anna, will you please make the girls at the table look good."
-Betsy to Anna, Soul Bender

"What about you, Betsy? Who are you going with?" She looked away.
"No one. I'm not going."
"What? That's crazy. You're so pretty and perfect and flirty. Who doesn't want to go with you?"
"All true words, Anna," Betsy said without her trademark deadpan expression.
-Anna and Betsy, Soul Twister

"The way you think is just out there."
-Betsy to Anna, Soul Twister

Soul Twister by Robyn Jones
Touched Girl #3
Release Date: July 21, 2014
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance
Source: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. And then I purchased my own copy today!
Rating: 5 Bookworms

Synopsis
Months into recovering from the bloody events that took place in Soul Bender, Anna Pierce is ready to get back out there and fulfill her self-crafted destiny. Sadly, no one in her life feels the same way. The emergence of buried memories and out-of-the-blue powers send her straight into regular sessions with the school counselor. If only she could talk about her overly protective vampire boyfriend or the real threat posed by former friends turned enemies or her new guide who makes her former guide look like a bowl of sunshine. Anna has a lot going on, but at least she's too busy to think about her first Christmas at Ella's.

Wow! What an amazing read. Ms. Jones uses the perfect blend of suspense, action, mystery, romance, and humor to create a riveting story that I didn't want to put down. In fact, I was rather shocked when I flipped the page only to realize it was over.

In my previous reviews of Touched Girl novels, I waxed poetic about Ms. Jones' use of words to convey the setting, characters, and emotions in such a way that it all is so visceral. Soul Twister is no different. While reading, I felt as if I could see every location, see every action, and feel every emotion. This, of course, leads to tight connections with the characters. I'm so invested and enamored with each of them - even the bad vamps - that I was glued to my kindle.

Soul Twister finds Anna learning to cope with the aftermath of Brad, while also learning more about the Touched Girl powers she continues to manifest. She must also learn to control those powers as she's facing new dangers. But she's also just an 18 year old girl. Witnessing Anna trying to balance both sides of her life - trying to pass her classes and decide on a college while hunting vamps and loving one - was touching at times and comical at others. I adore watching Anna - having been stuck in her own head for so many years - learn to be communicative through words and actions.

At Anna's side are a colorful cast of characters, both human and vampire. Peter, Anna's vamp boyfriend, continues in his quest to deal with all the interesting bonuses of being Anna's boyfriend along with figuring out how to protect her. Peter often says that they make each other more human and while some of his actions and reactions frustrated me, I relished the fact they were very human.

Ms. Jones does a phenomenal job of allowing us to know Anna's parents through flashbacks. It's incredible how present they are in the story, in Anna's life, despite Anna having lost them. Anna's grandma, Ella, cousins Betsy and Sara, baby Sam, the study group of Chuck and Trent, Cody/Eric, and even neighbor Ted, surround Anna in a cocoon of love that is so needed since the loss of her parents. Ella with her sex talks and Betsy with her snark, provide giggles when things are getting tense. Sara and Sam are good with the hugs. Anna's family is huge when you add in all the vamps and it proved Anna's words:
"You get to love as many people as you can. That's the trade for a short life. Love big and life seems long."
Forgiveness and redemption are important themes in this series and I enjoy watching as Anna works out an understanding that works for her. Anna sees goodness in everything (or tries to), is so forgiving of people, and wants happiness for everyone. But she's not afraid to take down a bad vamp. Even when hunting vamps though, Anna is looking to redeem them.

I'm not doing the story justice here. There's so much about Soul Twister, the vampire/Touched Girl mythology, the suspense in wondering if Anna will survive her latest battles, the interactions of all the characters, even the action scenes, that all combine for an enthralling read. I'm very eager for the next installment.

Hey Trent, thanks for dropping by my blog. I'll try to keep my questions as painless as possible. *grin* So, what were your first impressions of Anna?

Sad and beautiful with a hidden dose of attitude. Anna doesn’t remember, but I saw her Sara’s baby shower. She gave me a dirty look, sort of. She didn’t look at me, but I got the picture.

I have to ask because I need to know...Why did all those bad words come out toward Anna? Did you mean to be insulting or are you just "bad with words" like Anna said? I mean, I wanted to punch you sometimes with the observations that flew out of your mouth...

Anna would love this question. I go off what I see, but I’ve recently discovered there is a world beyond our seeing. Do you remember that she said I’m bad with my words and good with my mouth?

What was the point of continuing to hang around at Anna's when it seemed you stayed frustrated with Anna and only ended up upsetting her?

She’s addictive.

So, how did you feel when Anna stepped in front of Jason's fist? Did it hurt your ego at all??

I wanted to shake her and tell her to stop getting hurt! It pissed me off. It still pisses me off because she steps in front of fists in one form or another all the time.

How did you feel/what did you think about Anna's effect on your mom?

I don’t know how to put it. God, I want to hold onto her until she understands what she gave me, but she slips through my fingers. The girl is sand in the wind.

I was sorta impressed that you were so calm after learning some pretty scary stuff about Anna's world? Why didn't you run?

It was a relief for some of the pieces of the puzzle to finally fit together. And it feels good to know her this way.

Did learning about Anna's other world help you to understand Anna and her lack of honesty better?

Anna would definitely tell you my learning about her other world did very little to help me understand her. I get it all wrong. We’ll see about the lying thing.

What is it about Anna and her kisses? ;)

She gives you bliss wrapped in pure love, but that’s just the poetic part. The girl has no idea how insanely hot she is and when she kisses you, it’s never a show.

Thanks again, Trent! I really appreciate your candor. ;)
