TBR Pile Reading Challenge

Hey y'all! This year I have had the privilege of discovering so many fabulous blogs/bloggers and thereby discovering so many talented authors and phenomenal books. However, this has left me in a bit of a "situation". My TBR pile has grown to ginormous proportions! :) So, in order to whittle down the number of TBR books on my shelves, I've decided to participate in the 2013 TBR Pile Reading Challenge hosted by Fiktshun, Bookish Evie, Justin's Book Blog, Doodles Book Blog, Escaping One Book at a Time, and Words at Home. (Click here to see the guidelines for the challenge and to participate.)

This challenge requires that I read books that have been on my TBR pile prior to 2013. And folks, that's quite a few books, I must admit. :) I'd like to say this won't be difficult at all. I simply need to stick to reading books and ebooks I already own. However, this would mean that I'd need to refrain from reading blogs and thereby avoid seeing all the shiny new books out there...and that is an absolute impossibility for me. :) So I'm gonna be realistic about challenging myself and go for A Sweet Kiss which means knocking off 21-30 books from my TBR pile from 2012 and earlier. This would really be quite an accomplishment!

So, who's with me?!?

Oh, That Boy!

That Boy (That Boy, #1)
Title: That Boy
Author: Jillian Dodd
Series: #1 That Boy
Genre: New Adult

Synopsis from GoodReads:

You know, being friends with two cute boys does have its benefits.

There's Danny. Danny is a golden boy in every way. He has dreamy blue eyes and blonde hair that always looks perfect, even when it’s windblown or been stuck under a football helmet. He’s the boy every girl crushes on. The boy I get into trouble with, the boy I fight with, the hot quarterback no girl can resist, not even me. Being with Danny is like being on an adventure. He has a bright, contagious smile and abs to die for. He’s pretty much irresistible.

Equally crush worthy is Phillip. Adorable, sweet Phillip, who I have known since birth.  Phillip has dark hair, a perfect smile, brown eyes, and the sexiest voice I have ever heard. He’s the boy I talk to every night before I go to sleep. The boy who rescues me, the boy who can read my mind, the boy who is always there for me, the boy who tries to keep me out of trouble, the boy who irritatingly keeps getting hotter, and whose strong arms always seem to find their way around me.  And when he gives me that grin, I can never say no.

One boy will give me my very first kiss.
One boy will teach me to make out.
One boy will take me to prom.
And finally, one boy will ask me to marry him.
They will both be my best friends.
But only one of them will be the boy I fall in love with.
Only one of them is That Boy.

Another review in my continuing quest to read every TFEiC author! =)

This is such a great read! Jillian Dodd has created extremely lovable characters...the kind you feel like you've known your whole life...the kind you've watched grow up. It's a pretty amazing feat to write the ever-changing perspective of a girl as she matures. And Ms. Dodd does it with aplomb and great humor.

The beginning of the book is set in the present and then we are taken back through the lives of the three main characters. I have to say that Ms. Dodd kept me guessing through much of the book about which boy "That Boy" actually was...I was gratified with the reveal. :)

The story isn't all fun & games...J.J., Phillip, and Danny go through trials and tribulations, J.J. in particular. But the way they weather those times is testament to the strong community upbringing they've had (not unintentional I'm sure, since Ms. Dodd grew up in Nebraska as well ;) The way in which these three revolve around each other and stay entangled in each other's lives is incredible. I hate to use the word "sweet" but it is a sweet story. In the end, I think this story illustrates the strong bonds of friendship and love formed between a girl and her two boys next door. I'm looking forward to the next chapter...That Wedding!

A Shade of Vampire

A Shade of VampireTitle: A Shade of Vampire
Series: A Shade of Vampire
Author: Bella Forrest

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

From GoodReads:
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's 17th birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.

An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

******************
I'm so very grateful to Bella Forrest for offering me the chance to her book. I love vampires...I loved vampires way before it was cool to love vampires. So I'm always intrigued by vampire stories with new twists. When I read the synopsis for A Shade of Vampire, my interest was definitely piqued. But could Ms. Forrest deliver a vampire story in a fresh and innovative way? You betcha! And I'm so thrilled I took a chance. :)

A Shade of Vampire is very fast-paced. It's told from both Sofia's and Derek's POV. I think the dual POV added to the story. I appreciated getting to see into both MC's heads. This is really only a novella in length, but the world building and character development Ms. Forrest accomplishes in such few words in incredible! Plus, she throws in a bit of mystery and lots of suspense...and some vampire romance! :)

Sofia is kidnapped on the evening of her 17th birthday. When she meets Derek, the reason she was kidnapped, she feels fear but also something else. Derek, upon seeing Sofia, feels an uncontrollable urge for her blood. But he somehow does control himself and this sets the stage for a relationship with a human unlike any Derek's ever had.

The synopsis makes it seem as though there is a competition of some sort between Sofia and other girls to win Derek's attention. However, no competition occurs. Sofia captures Derek at first sight. However, although Derek is immediately taken with Sofia, Sofia has to work up to her feelings. And she's no wilting flower. This girl stands with her head high in the face of adversity. Another reason Derek's attracted to her. :)

This book is seemingly setting the stage for books to come with it's world building. We are introduced to the Blood Shade, a sanctuary built by Derek for vampires. We get glimpses of Derek's history, the shadow hunters who are out to destroy the vampire race, and prophetic visions and prophecies which Derek and Sofia are meant to fulfill.

I don't want to give anything away but I will say that watching the relationship between Sofia and Derek blossom was fascinating. And I cannot wait to read further about this world Ms. Forrest has created. A Shade of Vampire has set some high expectations for me.

Take a trip to Blood Shade...you won't regret it!

Pushing the Limits

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits, #1)Title: Pushing the Limits
Author: Katie McGarry
Received ARC from NetGalley

From GoodReads:
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

*****************

I have to put some lighter reading at the top of my TBR pile y’all! Pushing the Limits wrung me out emotionally. But in a good way. :)

Echo and Noah are two prickly characters. Yet, I ended up loving them both. They’ve both endured unspeakable tragedy. Making their circumstances even more tragic, Echo can’t remember the details of the night her life really changed and Noah’s life keeps punching him in the gut again and again. Neither wants anyone to get close because that can only lead to hurt. So Echo tries to be invisible and Noah lives up to his pothead/love ‘em, leave ‘em reputation. However, as they get to know one another they find allies and confidants, plus an undeniable attraction.

Ms. McGarry covers a lot of topics in this novel. There is bipolarism, the war in Afghanistan, death, and issues within child protective services. She does so beautifully. I was drawn into these characters’ lives and felt emotionally invested in them. I cheered for Echo and Noah. In each other they’ve found a person they can trust which enables them to move on with their lives. I was happy that Echo found her truths and survived them. They were some extremely difficult truths and memories. I was also pleased with the resolution between Noah and his brothers. I think what resonates with me most is Echo’s and Noah’s willingness to endure so much, even the unknown, to feel normal and to know love.

And, of course, I can’t go without mentioning the supporting cast of characters. Even though they weren’t all likeable, they were all well developed and added a lot of depth to the story. I will definitely read more of Katie McGarry’s work.

I Got Slammed!

Slammed (Slammed, #1)Title: Slammed (#1 Slammed)
Author: Colleen Hoover

From GoodReads:
Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.
Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.
Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.

****************

Before I get to my review, I want to say that I've had this review sitting around on my computer for awhile now. I felt I needed to really spend some time on extolling the greatness of Colleen Hoover. But in the end, I can only tell you how much I loved this book and that you should run right out and get it if you're one of the remaining few who haven't already been Slammed!

And now my review...

Let me start off by saying that Slammed first caught my eye when it started popping up all over GoodReads. It’s actually through Colleen Hoover that I found out about TFEiC. Anyway, I finally caved to the peer pressure =) on GoodReads and read the synopsis of this book. I was immediately hooked. And once I downloaded and began reading it, I was so in love after only reading the dedication...why? Colleen Hoover is a huge fan of The Avett Brothers (whom she dedicated Slammed to and she also quotes their lyrics throughout!) I also happen to love The Avett Brothers...so I felt it was just kismet that brought me and Ms. Hoover together. =) The way Ms. Hoover intertwines the lyrics with the story is brilliant!

And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!

I found the idea of a book revolving around/ involving poetry very appealing. The poetry slam was brilliant way to include poetry in this book. Let us not forget, "the point is not the points, the point is poetry". However, when I finished reading Slammed, I realized the word had many connotations when it came to its use in this book. Obviously, Slammed is referencing poetry slams, which play an important role throughout the book. Slammed also refers to how events slammed into Layken and Will’s lives as well as how those events slammed Layken and Will together. Intrigued yet?

The circumstances around Layken and Will’s meeting and subsequent relationship are so very compelling. I can’t imagine going through the things they go through so early in their young lives. And that they each met another who could relate, completely, to the struggles they were living through...well, that’s amazing.

I know y’all are probably noticing a theme in my reviews about supporting characters...they are oh, so important to me! And Slammed didn’t let me down.

I don’t want to go through the plot of the book much more than the blurb and I have already...you MUST read it.

Iced

Iced (Dani O'Malley, #1)Title: Iced (#1 Dani O'Malley Trilogy)
Author: Karen Marie Moning

From GoodReads:
The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.

Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.

When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.

Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

************************

Wow! I’d forgotten how much energy goes into reading a KMM novel. There’s always such exquisite detail. She’s constantly weaving threads through to be picked up later (much like the Seelie Queen) and adding or shifting layers and twisting plots. I have to sticky note, underline, highlight, and make notes to refer back to when starting the next KMM novel...or rereading one. :) And her writing is so very eloquent and yet so entertaining.

*grin* Yes, I’m gushing like a fangirl...I’m a loyal Moning Maniac!

Iced, the first in KMM’s new Dani O’Malley trilogy, picks up where Shadowfever left off...AWC. Dublin has suffered terribly in the aftermath. And now, a new threat has surfaced and it’s up to Dani “Mega” O’Malley to determine what the threat is and how to stop it in order to save the world.

I’m gonna try not to be spoiler-y here. This is such an incredible read but one you really should experience for yourself! :)

Dublin has suddenly come under siege by something that ices its victims seemingly without warning. No witnesses have survived, so it’s up to Dani and her cohorts to figure out who or what is causing the deep freeze of Dublin, and then determine a way to end it before it’s too late.

Besides solving the mystery of the latest threat to Dublin, Dani has several other obstacles, threats and people to contend with. First, there’s Ryodan. Dani’s working for him now and he’s attempting to take care of her in his own way, which, of course, chafes Dani because that care invariably involves rules and Dani’s not so good with rules. Their relationship leaves me quite confuzzled I have to tell you. I’ve read many other bloggers’ opinions of KMM’s endgame between these two and I’m just not sure what to think. The biggest issue giving me pause is Jo. I mean, WTF? (please, once you read Iced, let me know what you think...)

Next, Dani is contending with Christian, his transformation into an Unseelie Prince, and his professed love for her. He’s always showing up at opportune times to save her and a true tug-of-war ensues between Christian and Ryodan...but I’m only truly certain of what Christian wants from Dani. As he says:

“You get a shot at something like her once in a lifetime. And if you screw it up there’s a special place in hell for you.”

“He (Ryodan) knows she’s worth waiting for. And when it’s time, he intends to be the one. That’s why he’s keeping her close. To those of us who live forever, a few years isn’t long to wait. Not for something worth waiting for. Not for a once-in-a-lifetime girl.”

Dani is also struggling with her friendship with Dancer. Dancer is her closest friend and ally and Dani puts his superbrain into overdrive trying to solve this mystery. Dancer, though, tries to get too close at times and this causes Dani to pull away. She tries to examine her feelings for Dancer but doesn’t have to the time to dedicate to it since Dublin is an icebowl in the middle of June. Plus, I’m not sure Dani knows what to do with her feelings for anyone. Ryodan points out:

“By your own definition you don’t love anyone either. An argument could be made that you only ever do one of three things to the people closest to you: make enemies of them, kill the people they love, or get them killed.”

Another obstacle Dani is dealing with is a group calling themselves WeCare. They’re posting Dailies and seemingly trying to discredit Dani and her daily missives. WeCare are trying to lull Dubliners into coming out into the open and Dani is livid because it only puts them in danger because of the unknown icing threat.

Of course, Dani is eternally avoiding Mac. The guilt Dani is carrying around over killing Alina (Mac’s sister) is a great weight. That, along with believing Mac is out hunting for her, is an enormous amount of emotional baggage for Dani to carry around.

And finally, there is the threat of a newly released fae, the Unseelie Princes hunting her, and Jayne chasing her trying to liberate her sword.

Gosh, that’s a lot to avoid...good thing Dani can freeze-frame! :)

I appreciated the insight into Dani’s childhood provided in this book. It went a long way to explaining some of Dani’s behaviors and circumstances. I also love when Dani has epiphanies. She really is a brilliant, 14 year old superhero! However, another layer to Dani was added when her “alter-ego” (I can’t think of another term for it) is revealed. Definitely made me say, hmm...

So, obviously I loved this book! It did take me awhile to read but all KMM’s books do because I’m always trying to read between the lines. And the stuff between the lines is always so thought provoking for me.

I’d really enjoy having a discussion with any of you who read or have read Iced about what you think it going on between the lines. I definitely have some ideas and opinions but as usual, I really have no idea where KMM is going. So I'll be (im)patiently waiting for Burned!!!

Best of 2012 - Swoon-Inducing Quotes

The Top 10 Best Swoon-Inducing Quotes
From Those Hunky Heroes

Today's Top 10 is blogger's choice, and I had a hard time deciding. But eventually I decided to go with some quotes that make me swoon - the reasons I love those heroes. :) FYI - some of the quotes are PG-13 for language. :)

Tod Hudson - Before I Wake
“You're not lost, Kaylee. You can't ever be lost, because I'll always know where you are. And if I'm not there with you, I'm on my way, and nothing standing between us will be standing for very long.”

“I love you, Kaylee. More than I've ever loved anyone. More than I will ever love anyone. If I could freeze this moment in time and never have to let you go, I would do it without a second thought.”

Kaidan Rowe - Sweet Evil
“What do you want from me, Kai?”
“For starters?” His voice lowered to sexy, dangerous depths. “I want to introduce myself to every freckle on your body.”

“I felt you come alive when we kissed, and I know you’re afraid of that. Afraid to
unleash that other side of yourself. ”

Jake Wethers - The Mighty Storm
“I’ll never be good enough for you, I know that. But I’m no good without you, and if that makes me a selfish bastard for wanting you as badly as I do then so be it because I can’t live a life that doesn’t have you in it.”

“I’ve only ever loved one girl, Tru – and that’s you. It’s always been you. I loved you from the moment I knew how to love.”

Deuce West - Undeniable
“I damn well know a good thing when I see it and babe all I’ve ever been able to fuckin’ see is you. Not many chances a man has in his lifetime to do right, to earn the love of a good woman, and to get a taste of true freedom. And babe, for me, you’re all fuckin’ three. Have been for a good while now.”

“Cause when it comes to you, darlin', I got no fuckin' sense. You fuckin' pull me in until you're all I can fuckin' see. Suddenly, I can't fuckin' breathe, but I don't care 'cause you, babe, you're you. And I ain't ever met anyone as fuckin' perfect as you.”

“Can't fuckin' live without you. Want you on my bike and in my bed. Want my kids inside you. Want you by my side babe for as long as I got left”

Kellen Kyle - Thoughtless
“If I'm yours and you're mine...then I will take you, wherever and whenever I can.”

“He spoke rapidly in-between his tender kisses. 'I love you. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. The women...I was so scared to touch you. You didn't want me...I couldn't take the pain. I tried to get over you. Every time with them, I was with you. I'm so sorry...I love you.'”

Gideon Cross - Bared to You
“I’ve always seen you, angel. From the moment you found me, I’ve seen nothing but you.”

“You forget who submits, Eva,” he said gruffly. “I’ve given up control for you. I’ve bent and adjusted for you. I’ll do anything to keep you and make you happy. But I can’t be tamed or topped. Don’t mistake indulgence for weakness.”

“I'm an animal with you," he murmured. "I want to mark you. I want to possess you so completely there's no separation between us.”

Daemon Black - Onyx
“With my name on her lips and with barely anything separating us, I felt the last of my control slipping. Whitish-red light radiated off of me, bathing Kat in the warm glow. There was nowhere that my hands didn’t explore, and the way her body arched into the slightest touch, I was awed and consumed. Kissing her and drawing her deep inside me, I never wanted this to end. She was perfect to me. She was mine, and I wanted her more than I wanted anything in my life.”

“Air punched out of my lungs. I held her tight, and I knew right then I would burn down the whole universe for her if I had to. I would do anything to keep her safe. Kill. Heal. Die. Anything. Because she was my everything.”

Will Cooper - Slammed
“And life definitely doesn't want me
To just let it tell me
that the girl I met,
The beautiful, amazing, strong, resilient girl
That I fell so hard for
Should only come in third
Coming SoonLife knows.
Life is trying to tell ne
That the girl I love
The girl I fell
So hard for?
There's room for her in first.
I'm putting her first.”

“I love you, Lake," he smiles as he presses his forehead against mine. "You deserve to come first.”

Adrian Ivashkov - The Golden Lily
“I tried to be a better person for her– but it was to impress her, to get her to want me. But when I’m around you, I want to be better because… well, because it feels right. Because I want to. You make me want to become something greater than myself. I want to excel. You inspire me in every act, every word, every glance. I look at you, and you’re like… like light made into flesh. […] You have no clue how beautiful you are or how brightly you shine.”

“He shouldn't have said that," repeated Adrian, eerily serious. He leaned his face toward mine. "I don't care if he's not the emotional type or the complimentary type or what. No one can look at you in this dress, in all that fire and gold, and start talking about anachronisms. If I were him, I would have said, 'You are the most beautiful creature I have ever seen walking this earth.”

Braden Carmichael - On Dublin Street
“I know you love me, Jocelyn, because there’s no fucking way I can be this much in love with you, and not have you feel the same way. It’s not possible.”

“I feel like I'm missing something really important when you're gone. So important I don't feel like myself. I've never felt like someone was mine before. But you're mine, Jocelyn. I've known that from the moment we met. And I'm yours. I don't want to be anyone else's, babe.”

“You're afraid. I get it," he bent to murmur comfortingly in my ear. "I know why you ran today, and I know why you're running now. But shit happens, babe, there's no protecting against it. You also can't let it take over your life and rule your relationships with people. We need to enjoy the time we have, however long it's going to be. Stop running.”

Ethan Blackstone - Naked
“You hit me the instant I saw you." he said, gruffly. "I couldn't look away. I wanted you immediately. Excessively. Almost violently.”

He tilted his head and spoke softly. “I want to be with you so badly right now. I want to take you home with me, and put you in my bed and have hours and hours with your body wrapped up in mine to do with as I wish. I want to have you there in the morning so when we wake up I can make you come, saying my name. I want to drive you to work and pick you up when it’s time to leave. I want to go to the shops with you and buy food we can cook for dinner. I want to watch some crap TV show and have you fall asleep against me on the couch so I can watch you and hear you breathing.”

“And even if you hate me for what I did, I'll still love you. If you won't see me, I'll still love you. I'll still love you because you are mine. Mine, Brynne. In my heart you are, and nobody can take that away from me. Not even you. E”
