Scary Modsters… and Creepy Freaks by Diane Rinella
Release Date: March 25, 2014

Synopsis
A fantastical romance involving a girl, the music that fuels her, and her Ouija board.

Rosalyn possesses a sunny personality that is laced with quirks. Although she seeks acceptance in a world where she lives out of time, what she gets is ridiculed for her eclectic wardrobe and unconventional music collection.

One fateful night, Rosalyn bewitches Niles, a stylish man whose offbeat character perfectly complements her own. Unfortunately, he possesses a critical flaw that means relationship suicide for him and pretty much anyone.

While under the influence of insomnia-impaired judgment, Rosalyn summons Rock ‘n Roll deity Peter Lane back from the dead. Not only does he spin her hormones into a frenzy, Peter is also the precarious puzzle piece that brings sense into her world. When Niles learns that he can overcome his life-long challenge by helping Peter avenge his death, how far will he go to secure Rosalyn’s heart?

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
You know, I think this is the most difficult question you could ask. When you come right down to it, I’m a girl with a short attention span who makes up stories and puts them on paper. To get more
complex, I’m an open-minded individual who advocates for free speech and equal rights. I also happen to be addicted to old school rock and roll. My true passion is acting. I love making indie films.
Before I wrote my first book I had my own business making high-end wedding cakes. You may have seen some of my work on TV.

Tell us about Scary Modsters. Why are readers going to love it?
Readers of my Forbidden Flower series who loved the soul mate concept will be intrigued by how the three main characters in Scary Modsters relate. (Hint, it’s based on an obscure theory.) I tried to
find another book that uses a similar storyline and couldn’t. Another thing that makes it different is that there is no true alpha male. If there were, Rosalyn wouldn’t give him the time of day. Now, I know the rock star thing has been really popular, but Peter’s experiences and the generation he came from gives him a different perspective on the world. Also, I seem to have hit at the beginning of an emerging trend. Peter was a mod. This spring Rimmel, Target, and Sinful Colors all have Mod campaigns. I could not have planned it better. Truthfully, I just wrote about the things that were close to my heart.

I've been reading about how Ian Somerhalder serves as a muse for you. Can you talk a little about that?
Wow! So you are the person who reads my blog! :) You know, people really misunderstand the role of the muse. A muse isn’t someone you copy; it’s someone who plants seeds in your brain. Most often it seems they have given you a seed for a daisy bush and you get an orange tree. Actors are very vulnerable people. Something in Ian helps me see past his character and into his personal vulnerability. It’s like I can hear his inner monologue (one of the most powerful tools an actor uses.) When I saw The Rules of Attraction and The Tournament his characters gave me a seed of an idea that evolved into Niles from Scary Modsters. Even if you are familiar with all of these you probably won’t notice the connection because Niles developed into someone vastly different. The same thing happened with Donovan in Love’s Forbidden Flower. Ian has given me three more character seeds that are currently sprouting. Add in the fact that he is on a personal quest to change the world, and that I’m doing the Scary Modsters World Improvement blog tour in a few weeks, and you can see his influence has crept into my personal life.

Is there anything in particular that served as inspiration for this book?
There were several. This goes back to the muse part. In The Tournament we see where the lack of emotions can take a person. What about people who have other types of emotional restraints?
Emotions are pesky little creatures that drive us to do strange things. Having too many emotions can be as damaging as having too few.

In Scary Modsters, who was your favorite character to write and why?
I should preface this with saying that Scary Modsters is written from three points of view, which was really challenging. I have to go with Peter. He’s a little on the sarcastic side and a lot of the banter with him and Niles came easily. However, Niles was the toughest. He’s got a unique personality, and I used a lot of alternating between regular and deep point of view with him. (That can be tricky, because doing that can easily make someone sound psychotic.) He also rambles on internally about stuff that is seemingly random but always leads down a very intentional path, sometimes humorously so.

What is your current favorite book and what about it makes you love it so much?
Shell Shocked is the autobiography of Howard Kaylan, one of pop’s musical geniuses. He gives an honest, humorous, and heart breaking account of his experiences in The Turtles and how manager after manager screwed them. Sadly, a lot of artists have nothing to show for their mammoth success. The book makes you look at the music industry though a new set of eyes. Plus, Howard has a great gift for storytelling. It opens with a tale of him being in the White House and doing blow off of Lincoln’s desk. It’s a wild ride!

Speaking of which, you make an interesting comment in the introduction to Scary Modsters about the record industry and the problems artists had. What is the story behind that?
Peter Lane is based on both everyone and no one. While Scary Modsters is purely fictional, I did my homework and used real accounts as a catalyst for Peter’s tribulations. Some of the stories I found were so outrageous that they pushed the bounds of plausibility. One of my betas was shocked to hear the actual stories that fueled Peter’s creation. The fictional Peter may have stolen fruit off of trees so he could eat, but a very similar story happened to one of England’s most revered artists. Some artists were even tricked into signing contracts that made them employees, so they got a modest salary instead of royalties. A chart-topping album meant nothing to them financial because they made the same amount of money if it flopped.

Is there a question you’ve ever wished someone had asked but never been asked?
I’ve seen a lot of readers comment about how they wish they could talk to an author but they are afraid to approach them. Some readers even say they’d like to help us promote. Most authors are pretty approachable. If you truly want to help, interact with us. Follow or friend us on Facebook and engage in conversation. For every 1000 followers only 20-350 tend to see a post. The more
interaction a post has, the more visibility Facebook gives it. Plus, we authors LOVE to talk with you. Some of my biggest fans have become my dearest friends. I have a likeable Facebook page, and I
accept friend requests on my personal page. Come tell me your thoughts on the world.

**I need to learn to be a better Facebook user - so I can chat more with you, Diane!!**

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I’m nothing without them. Seriously, what good is a book if no one reads it? Even if someone hates my work, I am grateful that they gave it their time and attention. Readers and bloggers make my career, and I am incredibly grateful for all that they do.

ROSALYN
A brunette, a raven-haired beauty, and a girl looking like a peacock all walk into a bar. No, it's not a joke; it's my not-so-mundane life that generally feels like the setup for a wisecrack.

No matter how many times my friends and I claim we are going to do something new, every Friday night we find our tushes planted at Mulligan's. However, today our weekly Friday night venture truly
seemed out of the cards since my friends were originally too tired from their workweeks to consider anything short of collapsing. When you are in your early thirties and single you should be embracing life, not rotting on a sofa. Thus when my friends bailed I detoured into Warped Records which is both a second home and how I envision my little corner of Heaven. Some would call the smell of old album covers a dank stench, but to me it's a musky perfume that seeps into my pores and comforts me with the knowledge that no matter what fails me I always have my sanctuary.

Among the bins of paradise and the blaring Siouxsie the perfect gem captured my gaze and held it for ransom. Before me was a pair of eyes so unlike any other that they were nearly indescribable.

Piercing? No. That implies they shot through my skin and reached my heart; however, these somehow reached my soul. Captivating? Again that was misleading. While they did hold my attention they also kept me at bay. Perhaps haunting? Yes, they did indeed haunt me. They also seemed to follow me to wherever I stood. A true description was so elusive that the color wasn't easily defined. They were deep blue, yet also flannel grey with a hint of green. In a certain light they seemed black with specks of gold.

All of these emotions and colors were brought forth by just one picture—a picture on an album that had been slipped into plastic and unceremoniously tacked to the wall, yet somehow it jumped out at me and begged for worship.

“Who are those guys?” I asked Shane, the store's clerk. Shane's tight black pants, white Split Enz T-shirt, black suspenders, and short, curly brown hair made him look like a skinny, nineteen eighties teenager in a forty-something-year-olds body. His hot pink English Beat button sold the outfit. In an odd way our obsessions make us kindred spirits. It may be like we are third cousins, twice removed, but kindred nonetheless.

“Not a clue.” Shane absent-mindedly tapped a pencil on a note pad while his hazel eyes sat on a ragged copy of Rolling Stone that was decades out of date. “How is it you don't know? You're the super genius that no one can stump.” He sighed, conceding to the call of duty. “I suppose you want me to halt my important work and show it to you.”

“If it's not too much of a bother to pull yourself away from that fascinating article on INXS that is so old it will soon disintegrate, then yes, please. I would appreciate your struggle of removing the tack for a lady.”

With the flick of his wrist, Shane sent the magazine spinning across the counter. “Geez, you practically live here so I thought you would be more at home yanking the thing off yourself.”

“Glad to see that chivalry is alive and well at Warped Records.”

The album was presented with a bow. “Milady, as per your request.” Shane's smugness made me grin.

“Anyway, it arrived with some other records from a recent estate sale. Rob seemed to know who they were.”

My eyes honed in on the price tag. “Six dollars? That's a lot for a potentially crappy band no one has heard of.”

Shane's view floated from the magazine to the notepad. “Yep. Six bucks is what this says. I hung it next to the two hundred dollar, Jagger-signed, Goat's Head Soup to be funny.”

Four men, who were partially obscured by a golden overlay of paisleys and swirls, stared back at me. Their clothes were colorful, slightly Edwardian, and accented with fur. It was all very fashionable for the nineteen sixty-eight copyright printed on the back of the cover that held no liner notes. Three of the men felt so insignificant that they were but mere blurs. All I noticed was the cute one with the sandy blonde hair and magnetic eyes whose signature started with the letter P.

My fingers glided over the autograph whose ink felt as if it were luxurious azure velvet. It also gave off an energy that put a beat in my head. What really caught my attention was a spot of what appeared to be dried blood. When I touched it, a fuzz reminiscent of the thrill I get when hearing a vintage guitar effects pedal vibrated through. I had to have that album!

Enjoying San Francisco as a backdrop, the ghosts in Diane’s 150-year old Victorian home augment the chorus in her head. With insomnia as their catalyst, these voices have become multifarious characters that haunt her well into the sun’s crowning hours, refusing to let go until they have manipulated her into succumbing to their whims. Her experiences as an actress, business owner, artisan cake designer, software project manager, Internet radio disc jockey, vintage rock n’ roll journalist/fangirl, and lover of dark and quirky personalities influence her idiosyncratic writing.

Fall into Forever by Beth Hyland
AGE GROUP: NA
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
RELEASE DATE: March 10, 2014

Synopsis
Some girls may find guys like Jon exciting and charming. Some are even naive enough to want to date them. But guys like him can harbor dark, dangerous secrets. Secrets you don’t want to know or be involved in. How do you think they got this way in the first place? It’s best to follow your head and stay as far away from them as possible. Trust me when I say this: Guys like Jon Priestly are nothing but trouble.

Ivy McAllister had it all. Perfect boyfriend. Perfect life. Perfect future. Or so they tell her. Because one night, on a dark country road, a fiery crash changed everything…and Ivy can’t remember what happened.

Now, two years later, at a new college far from home, she tries to regain control of her life, but her plans don’t include a tattooed, motorcycle-riding, indie music-obsessed guy with his own sorority girl fan Jon Priestly is the hottest guy at Pacific State University. Just ask his groupies. But with a dark past he must keep hidden, he shuts himself off emotionally and trusts no one. That is…until he meets a broken girl with haunting green eyes and secrets of her own.

Ivy shouldn’t be attracted to Jon. They’re wrong for each other in every possible way. Yet as they spend time together, something about him—everything about him—feels so right. But when threats from her past make her question what little she does remember, Ivy must decide whether to run again or trust the one person she can’t live without.

**Interesting Facts about Fall Into Forever**

• Jon’s last name (Priestly) popped into my head at the same time I heard him saying, “I’m no angel.” I thought the contrast was perfect!

• At the party where they meet, when Jon falls at Ivy’s feet during the fight and when Ivy climbs out onto the roof, I knew the word Fall had to be in the title.

• When Cassidy tells about her little brother visiting her and passing out in public wearing only leopard print underwear, it was based on what happened when my little brother and his friend visited me in college. We still laugh about it.

• The book that Ivy references at the beginning about people being constructed from the parts of others is the YA book UNWIND by Neal Schusterman. It’s awesome!

• I got to attend the photo shoot for the cover. The female model had the funniest expression on her face when the photographer told her to climb onto the guy’s lap, because the two of them had just met.

• When I got an email reply from Christopher Poindexter saying he’d be honored to have his poem in my book, I fangirl-cried, took a pic of the email, and texted it to my daughter. (She and I both love his poetry.)

• The fictional Pacific State University is located approximately near Aberdeen, WA (where Kurt Cobain grew up), and is mixture of the cool elements of Western Washington University (to the North) and Oregon State University (to the South).

• I became concerned with issues about online safety when a Seattle police officer from the Internet crimes unit spoke to parents at my daughter’s school. The depravity of some people is sickening.

• PSU Net, where students vote for the movie being shown free around campus all month, is based on Oregon State’s Beaver-Net.

• When everyone meets outside Explorer Stadium before the start of the zombie race, I was envisioning a similar atmosphere (minus the zombies) outside OSU’s Reser stadium when I ran in the Corvallis Half Marathon last year.

• I got the idea for a zombie race on campus because 1) I’ve always wanted to run in one and 2) they have a Humans vs. Zombies event on the OSU campus, pitting humans against zombies. You’re never safe. You must always be on guard.

Dear Tabitha is the second book in the “Forever Family” series.

***Note: Dear Tabitha is not standalone. There may be minor spoilers of Dear Emily in my review.**

Trudy Stiles has written another achingly beautiful story. Tabitha and Alex's stories are heartbreaking in the tragic details yet inspiring as they overcome their pasts to reach for their forever family.

In Dear Emily, we got some details about Tabitha's past but not much about Alex's. In Dear Tabitha, both of their pasts are described in haunting detail. That either of them survived is nothing short of amazing. It's been about two years since Tabby made a mistake and Alex walked away. Two years in which they've each grown up and have become much stronger individuals. Although we're not present from most of that growth, it was incredible to see the changes - particularly in Tabby. She's strong enough to tell Alex everything, even if it causes him to walk away again.

Alex is astounded at the changes he sees in Tabby. He's so proud of the woman she's become - the woman he knew she could be. He can't seem to read her though and is hesitant to let her know how he feels. Once Tabby shares all her secrets, Alex is uncertain he can forgive her. When a turn of events leads Tabby back to Portland, the place where she lived through hell, Alex decides that enough time has been wasted between them and he'll be there for Tabby in whatever capacity she'll allow.

I adored seeing how much these two broken souls heal. They weren't fixed but healed enough to move towards forgiveness and family. I'm not sure why Tabby and Alex's story resonated with me so much. There was such a pull between Tabby and Alex. They'd each suffered so much and could relate to one another on a level no one else could comprehend. The honesty they shared - it evoked so much emotion in me. I'm grateful to have read their story. And I'm eager for the next in the series.

**Review ~ Secrets of the Dark ~ S.A. Archer & S. Ravynheart**

Secrets of the Dark

Secrets of the Dark by S.A. Archer & S. Ravynheart
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: December 2, 2013
Source: I received an ecopy from the author in exchange for an honest review
Rating: 4 Bookworms

Synopsis
Dangerous and magical in ways she never imagined, Simon sweeps into Tia's life one stormy night and single-handedly shatters her reality. Her friends insist Simon is a threat, and even though Tia know they are right, his passion and magic draws them together. Could it be that she and Simon are truly soul mates, like he claims? Or is he just using her to increase his magical powers? Simon's enemies believe so, and they are determined to keep them apart, even if it means killing them.

Secrets of the Dark was an engaging story and what I hope is an introduction to a series. :) The world building was nice and the character development was well-done. I don't know what's in store for Tia and Simon next, but I'm interested to see where the story goes from here.

Tia is a strong-willed and independent heroine. Although only references are made to the fact, she was raised by a military dad and she knows how to take care of herself. When she meets Simon, some of the choice in her situation seems to have been taken away. She rebels against this somewhat, which is understandable.

Simon is an enigma. As we begin learning more about him, his past and present, I liked him more and more. Simon is a good guy and he did his best to give Tia the choices he felt she deserved.

Team Archer/Ravynheart did a find job with introducing new (to me) paranormal beings while mixing them with the more familiar fae. There was a lot of world building to be done as the story includes separate planes of being alongside the world we know. There was also the creation of Rei'ta and Llyanni, beings who feed off psychic energy but as one is Dark and one is Light, they have different sets of moral codes. There are several other characters introduced, whom I liked. I'm hoping for the chance to get better acquainted with them. Secrets of the Dark incorporated political intrigue as well. The bond between Tia and Simon was instrumental in setting these things in motion and it was exciting to watch as the political drama played out.

I think my only complaint about the story is that because of the requisite world building, the action was a little slow in developing and I didn't get to know some of the side characters as well as I'd have liked. Otherwise, the pacing was well-done. The worlds and beings presented in Secrets of the Dark have captivated me and I'm hopeful there's more to Tia and Simon's story.

I have dual citizenship. I live in the world of the Sidhe almost more than I do in reality. Lugh, Donovan, London and the rest are more than just characters to me. I live through them. I fight along side them. I celebrate with them. I've danced all night in The Glamour Club. I've experienced the Sidhe Touch and I am addicted to it. I want to share my excitement for this fantasy world with you.

I'm blessed to have an awesome writing partner, S. Ravynheart. Together, he and I have created the most amazing world of magic, danger, and adventure.

**GUEST POST**

Brandee wanted me to write about ‘nailing the male point of view’ in my books. I’m flattered that people are loving the guys in the Tragic Series and I think it’s because I hung out with a lot of guys in my life. Most of my best friends were guys growing up. I always had a best girlfriend, but for some reason, there were always guys in the friend zone with us.

Guys are so different than girls. One time I was with my best friend Dena. We lived in Anaheim at the time and we were meeting these hot guys at this game center – a miniature golf place, arcade, go-carts and shit. So Dena and I hung out with these two friend-zone guys named Mike and Danny. Mike and Danny were not boyfriend material. They were just goofball friends we did lots of questionably legal things with. Mostly it involved drinking lots of beer on the beach and smoking pot. So we brought Mike and Danny with on this freaking date with these two hot guys and we told them to just stay in the car. Smoke their pot and be good. We’ll be back later.

Yeah. Needless to say, the date ended abruptly when we caught the friend-zone guys driving the car around the parking lot yelling at girls from the window. We never got second dates with the hot guys. But Danny, Mike, Dena, and I stayed friends for a long time. ;)

So I think I “get” the “guy” POV and my characters talk like the guys I know. When I started this series I had a very specific goal for each character and I tried to stay true to those traits in each book. All three of the guys are very different. Ronin is calm and patient. Ford is controlling and mysterious. And Spencer is protective and funny. So I think there is room for everyone to find a favorite.

If these guys were real and I had to choose, I’d pick Ford. I like that he can be funny, even when he’s not trying, and I like that he just takes care of things without telling people. He’s got a lot of rules, but if you’ve read Taut, you know the rules don’t apply to Ashleigh. She’s running that show even though he doesn’t realize it.

Thanks so much for being part of the GUNS tour and having me on your blog, Brandee!

**Please note: Do NOT read GUNS if you have not read the Rook & Ronin trilogy. GUNS is not a standalone.**

*sigh* I truly hate that this series has to end - but I couldn't have asked for a better ending. J.A. made me giggle, made me swoon, and made me cry. I've loved every minute of this ride with Rook, Ronin, Ford, Ashleigh, Spencer, and Veronica. GUNS definitely went out with a bang!

In GUNS, J.A. give us more intrigue with some interesting plot twists, as well as lots of feels. I stated in a previous review that Spencer is 'the muscle' of the Team. This point is really illustrated in GUNS. With the trial approaching, tensions increased as Spencer, Ford, and Ronin worry over protecting their girls. And since Spencer's job is to keep everyone alive, the weight of this task falls heavily on his shoulders. We're made aware of all his reasons in treating Veronica the way he does as well as seeing his struggles in his treatment of her. But more than that, we get to see how protective and loyal he is to everyone on his Team. Although he would put one above the rest, Spencer would do anything to save his friends.

And then there's Veronica. She's a pistol! She's tough - she knows how to throw a punch and shoot a gun. But when it comes to Spencer, well, she melts into a puddle of goo. She hates not being a part of Spencer's Team. But mostly she hates not being a part of Spencer's life.

I so love all these characters. I particularly enjoyed learning more about how Spencer initially wooed Veronica. I am, first and foremost, a Ford woman. But I will admit that Spencer would have free-reign with his airbrush and paints. :)

J.A. did an incredible job of tying up this story and leaving me absolutely fulfilled. It was fun, exciting, tense, swoon-worthy, blush-inducing and evoked such emotion from me. As raw as this story is, I appreciate all the details. I adore that J.A. incorporates things such as Rook and Veronica's feelings about one another, Ashleigh, and themselves. I laughed so hard at Ronin and Ford thinking they know their women so well...that they're the bosses in the relationships, when that couldn't be further from reality. And the epilogues...yes, two! Seriously satisfying!

I could go on and on with the fangirling. :) It's been such a pleasure getting to know these characters and live in their world, if only for a brief period of time. I've delighted in watching them grow, mature and 'figure it all out' on their own terms.

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Synopsis
The Team is growing. It’s no longer just Ford, Spencer, and Ronin and the three new additions have Spencer Shrike off his booze, off his bikes, and paranoid to the extreme. Every Team member has a job, and every job is important—but only Spencer’s job keeps everyone alive.

Veronica Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—completely distant and moody—and his fascination with weapons has turned into an obsession.

Now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. And she’s ready to jump ship. The last thing on Spencer’s mind is a relationship, and Veronica Vaughn has had enough.

But what if Spencer has a reason to keep Veronica at arm’s length? What if her life depends on his painful indifference? And what if… a very dangerous man with a very real vendetta sees through his ruse with killer clarity?

GUNS brings the entire Rook and Ronin series full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only thing standing in the way… is Spencer Shrike.
