My Review

One wicked night, indeed! One Wicked Night was a quick, well-written, and very sexy read. While it was short, it gave me just enough of a taste of what's to come in the Wicked series.

In One Wicked Night, we meet Angel Jones and Fernando Durante. These two have worked together for three years now. They have also secretly lusted for one another for almost as long. Since they work together and their company has an anti-fraternization policy, they haven't acted on their feelings. They haven't even broached the subject with one another.

Angel seems intelligent and very dedicated to her career. She also seems to have a good group of friends. Fernando also seems very smart and equally dedicated to his job.

We are also introduced to Angel's group of friends, as well as one of Fernando's. I'm hoping we'll learn more about these characters as this series continues.

In an attempt to help them get over each other, Angel and Fernando's friends offer them their invitations to an exclusive dating service. Both Angel and Fernando agree to use the service. As this dating service is quite unique in its approach to finding perfect matches, I was excited to see what would happen to our couple.

Do I wish I'd gotten to know both Angel and Fernando better? Yes. Do I wish I'd gotten to see their relationship develop more fully? Sure. Do I wish I'd learned more about the illusive figures behind Elite Classified Online Dating? Absolutely! But here's the thing...with novellas, I'm usually left unsatisfied - I always want more. I want more character development, more time for the story to unfold. With One Wicked Night, I would have enjoyed more. But I have to admit to feeling pretty satisfied.

While I will admit that some of the story was predictable, and of course, things moved along fairly quickly, I still enjoyed this entry into the Wicked series. I will definitely read the next book in the series. If you're looking for a light, sexy read, One Wicked Night should suffice. :)

About the Author

Hi, my name is Siren Allen. I’m a writer and lover of all things erotic and romantic. I reside in southern Mississippi where I write steamy romances that are guaranteed to make you blush. When I’m not listening to the characters in my head and jotting down their adventures, I am busy working as a Clinical Laboratory Technician.

**New Releases from Diane Rinella**

Hey y'all. Some of you may remember I reviewed Love's Forbidden Flower, by Diane Rinella, several months back. If you missed the review, you can read it here. It is a story that I truly loved, a story that broke my heart.

The sequel, Time's Forbidden Flower, is releasing August 19th. I'm quite excited to read more about Donovan and Lily.

An eternity of passion cannot be quelled by society.

Once upon a time Donovan assured Lily all of her dreams would come true. But how could he keep the promise of a fairy tale when her truest goals could not involve him, though her deepest desires did? Now, Lily has it all—love, passion, a family, and the career of her dreams—with Christopher. But something is lacking. She and Donovan have spent the last ten years living apart, and the soul mates are eager to reunite. Can Donovan keep his promise to give Lily all she desires, even with Christopher in the way?

For Lily and Donovan, the past is a mirror to the future that cannot be shattered.

Donovan is convinced Lily has been his love for all eternity. Determined to unravel the past, they embark on a journey to discover where it all began. For centuries Donovan has stolen Lily’s heart while forced to suffer for his love. How much can a soul endure before the breaking point is reached and a monster emerges? Can the demons of the past be combated to pave the way for happiness in the next life? Or has the abuse suffered in this life already turned Donovan hell bound? Time and again, one woman has destroyed their happiness. It’s time to silence her once and for all.

Diane has also written a novella for the series, Love's Erotic Flower. It releases TODAY. As you can tell from the title, it is intended for readers 18+ years of age.

*******************

Love's Erotic FlowerSociety’s torch only illuminates our path.

Very disturbing or somewhat intriguing? That is the question Donovan asks himself over his soul mate’s latest idea for bedroom antics. Undecided, he enters into a bet. If Lily wins, Donovan will become a willing participant in an unsettling new adventure. If she loses… Well, does Donovan really want her to lose?

Love’s Erotic Flower is an erotic, stand-alone, short story featuring the characters from the controversial New Adult Romance novel, Love’s Forbidden Flower. This piece is approximately 8000 words.

Warning: This title contains graphic language and raunchy sexual situations. It is intended for those 18 years of age and older.

In celebration of its release, for the next five days, July 29-Aug 2, Love's Erotic Flower is available for FREE.

My Review

I devoured this book! The Light in the Wound is utterly captivating. Isa's story is so touching and it's beautifully rendered. All the characters are deftly drawn. Isa's story resonates deeply with me.

"This was me. Cautious, methodical. Afraid of the unknown. Always."

Isa's journey toward self-discovery is a long and arduous one considering the obstacles she has to overcome. But it's a beautiful thing to witness her come into her own - for her to see how own worth and make choices based on what's best for her. Seeing her flourish when she chooses real love is breathtaking. Also seeing how every experience a person has - from dysfunctional family members to love - help to shape who we become.

"There is something to be said about a child's loyalty to her mother, no matter what the circumstance may be. There is unconditional love that forgives no matter how much hurt is thrown your way."
"I loved her, but I swore to never be like her."

Isa's relationship with her mother is not an easy one. When Isa's parents divorce, Isa is sent to live with her mother's parents. From that point on, Isa doesn't spend much time with her mother. Her mother tends to prioritize her many suitors and husbands over her children. And from a very young age, Isa has always been compared to her mother. Isa doesn't want to follow in her mother's footsteps where love is concerned.

Alex and Jesse, the two men in Isa's life, are vastly different men. With one, Isa always knows where she stands. With the other, she's constantly vying for his attention. One loves her for who she is. The other wants her to change for selfish reasons. They do each love Isa in their own way though. I don't want to say a lot of either man because I can't without being spoiler-y or swaying you with my opinions. I will say that, in my opinion, Isa made the right choice and although it took her a long time to get there, I understood her reasons.

"You're the first man that saw me and loved me for who I really am. You encourage me to be myself, you're happy when I succeed, you love my crazy family."

That Isa matured enough to realize the differences between the love of these two men was impressive. I think once she realized these differences, her decision was made. It wasn't an easy choice but she knew to which man her heart truly belonged.

But Isa's story isn't only about finding love. She must also learn to deal with the impact her parents' tumultuous marriage and subsequent divorce had on her. The fallout from the divorce had a significant effect on Isa, and her sisters. It affected her relationships with family and with boys. The divorce marked the beginning of her conflict avoidance and desire to make people happy - to make them love her.

"Somehow, the glimpse into my parents' truth had strengthened my resolve to never settle for anybody who didn't love me enough to make me a priority."

Obviously, this book made an impression on me. It was deeply moving. If you're looking for a complex story, rich with detail and finely crafted characters, I highly recommend The Light in the Wound.

**Sidekick Showcase #5**

Sidekick Showcase (previously known as Sidekick Saturday) is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

**********************************

This week, Jaclyn has chosen Cowboy as the theme. Once again, I was torn over whether to go literal or metaphorical with this theme. In the end, I went with...

Carter
from Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series

I chose Carter as a cowboy because he's a maverick. He's a greasy-haired, grunge-wearing, chain smoking, ____ drinking angel! He's best friends with an demon. He gets things done and he does things his own way. He's always so witty. And I love him! ;)

"Love is rarely flawless," Carter pointed out. "Humans delude themselves by thinking it has to be. It is the imperfection that makes love perfect."

"Georgina, sometimes I think you might be worth following around, just to hear what you'll say next."

"Even new vampire hunters wise up eventually."

"I forget, Georgina rushes in where angels fear to tread."

"Love doesn't make angels fall, Georgina. If anything, love can have quite the opposite effect."

"No one is beyond being loved."

**Blog Tour Review ~ Bait ~ K.C. Blake**

Bait (Order of the Spirit Realm #1)
Title: Bait
Series: Spirit of the Realm #1
Author: K.C. Blake
Genre: YA Paranormal

**I received an ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis from GoodReads:
At sixteen, Bay-Lee Bishop is not a typical girl.  The last thing she wants is to be popular, but flying under the radar is nearly impossible when you’re the tallest kid in the eleventh grade.  She works hard to maintain a steady C point average, never raises her hand in class, and avoids extra-curricular activity of any kind.  The other students would be shocked to learn she’s living under an alias, relocating at her uncle’s whim, and hiding from monsters who want her dead because she’s Van Helsing’s daughter.

Life is weird.  Then everything changes.  A reaper uses her closet to cross over from the Spirit Realm right before her father whisks her away to a new school.  This is the school she was born for, the school where she will learn to hunt and kill monsters, but it isn’t what she imagined.  Students hate her, her mentor refuses to help her, and wraiths are murdering hunters on their birthdays.  She is laser-focused on training.  Love is not an option for her, but try telling that to her heart.

*******************************************
My Review

Bait is an excellent introduction to a new YA paranormal series. It has action, suspense, well developed characters, monsters that really do hide in closets, a possibly world-ending prophecy, and a little romance. :)

Bay-Lee is a wonderful heroine. She's outspoken and fierce even though she's always trying to blend into the crowd. To say she's had an non-traditional upbringing is an understatement. She's constantly moving and changing her name because there are monsters who want her dead. All because she's Van Helsing's daughter. But everything she does in life is done with a single-minded goal...

Nick Gallos, a.k.a. Tyler Beck, is everything you'd imagine a rock star to be. He's arrogant, attractive, talented and brash. He's been living under an assumed identity as a way of hiding who and what he is. But now he's having to figure out how to be himself. And he blames all his woes on Bay-Lee.

Ms. Blake created an interesting cast of supporting characters as well. I liked what they each added to the story even if I second guessed some of their motives. Keisha, for example, kept me guessing. As a fellow student and roommate to Bay-Lee, I was always wondering if her intentions were altruistic or driven by competition. And Alec, Nick's brother, is another character I liked if only for his adamant dislike of Bay-Lee.

I adored this story built around the legend of Van Helsing. (He's the original vampire hunter, for those of you who haven't read Dracula.) It's original and fun. It has all sorts of monsters but we don't see many of the most common kind. One of the things I liked most about Bait was the mystery and suspense. Ms. Blake managed to maintain the same level of suspense throughout the story and I really never had a clue as to how things were going to play out. Ironically, I found myself vascillating between different theories. And that ending?!? Whoa! Didn't see that coming.

The reason my indecision was ironic is because that tendency was one of the things that annoyed me about some the characters. They didn't seem capable of sticking to a decision once they'd made it. There were also a few places where I felt the story dragged a bit as well as places that gave me whiplash it moved so quickly.

Overall, Bait is very entertaining and novel. I liked all the characters -- well except for Jordan. ;) And Ms. Blake captured and held my interest. I will await Hunter, the second book in the series, with bated breath.

**Feature & Follow ~ #28**

Happy Friday and welcome to the Blog Hop!

Feature & Follow is a weekly blog hop hosted by the talented ladies behind AlisonCanRead and Parajunkee's View. The intent of this blog hop is to get out there and meet other bloggers and gain new followers yourself. What sets this blog hop apart is the Feature. Each week, two blogs are featured, one at AlisonCanRead and one at Parajunkee's View. So make sure to hop over to those blogs to check out this week's Features.

This week's Features are:
Paradays
Once Upon a Coffin

This week's question is:
What do you do with your books once you're done reading them?

My answer:
Well, it depends...if it's a book that's part of a series, or by an author I adore, and if the book was just outstanding and I think I'll read it again...it goes on my shelves. This way I can re-read it when the mood strikes AND I can share it with friends.

If, however, the book didn't trip my trigger, I donate it or take it to a local used bookstore.

Here is one wall in my library...so you can see that most books end up here in my own little slice of heaven. :)

What about y'all? What do you do with books once you're done reading them?

Nearly Broken
by Devon Ashley
Release Date: 06/04/13
New Adult Romantic Suspense / Realistic Fiction
Recommended for 17+ for mature and disturbing situations, language and sexual content.

Summary from Goodreads:
We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?

Nineteen year old Megan Smith has spent the past year working in a small town diner in the middle of nowhere. Life is quiet, simple, safe. Then comes the news that her look-a-like has gone missing.

Claire.

Still damaged both physically and mentally, Megan's not looking to be noticed. Wherever she goes from here, it's a road she needs to take alone. But when Nickolas Ellis takes the job as the new nightshift cook, it scares her how easily her defenses crumble down, down, down for him. But there are secrets she can't bear to share with just anyone, unspeakable acts that continue to haunt, and when the similarities of Claire’s abduction couples with the fear of an unwanted visitor in town, the urge to run before it all happens again intensifies, threatening the only happiness Megan's ever found.

*********************************************
My Review

Amazing, disturbing, heartbreaking, yet hopeful...all words to describe this book! Nearly Broken deals with a subject that's difficult to wrap my brain around. It discusses the horrors suffered by the victims of abduction and their families. And it does so through a well written story woven around a true survivor!

Megan Smith is a survivor. She's brave, strong, resilient. The one thing about her that was her saving grace and her downfall is her spirit. She refused to be broken. I'm rather in awe. I know she didn't escape her experience without damage but she escaped. And it was awe inspiring.

The emotional suffering Claire's family has endured since she went missing is unfathomable. Her sister, Thea, has worked tirelessly to keep Claire's abduction relevant. Thea has suffered more acutely because of a secret she's been carrying since the day Claire went missing. Claire's family has never given up hope that she'd be found. This love and support is something Megan sorely missed.

And Nick...well, I can't say a whole lot about Nick without being spoiler-y. He does evoke a lot of feelings from Megan. Feelings that scare Megan since she's worked so hard to be as invisible as possible. The intensity between Nick and Megan is powerful. He wants to be Megan's rock. He wants to protect Megan and save her from her demons. But Nick has demons of his own.

One issue I had initially with Nearly Broken is that fact Megan seems so normal after her abduction experience. I didn't believe that time healed all wounds. And Megan had wounds, both physical and mental. I'm not saying she was 'normal' normal. But I was surprised by her ability to interact with humans at all. Then came the last quarter of this story and I understood. It became clear to me that Megan wasn't healed - she was functional. I think Megan's most defining characteristic is her unbreakable spirit.

It's hard to say everything I want to say about Nearly Broken without giving away pieces of the story. And that would be a travesty. Ms. Ashley kept me guessing, biting my nails, and sweating as my adrenaline was pumping like crazy. I felt like I'd been through the wringer when I was done. I think the writing is excellent and the story was well paced. Ms. Ashley created lots of suspense and evoked tons of emotion. And this is just the first book in this series. The next book can't be released soon enough.

EXCERPT

“I’m afraid I’m going to have this hanging on my conscious all day now.” he teased.

“That only seems fair.”

“Yes it does, but I have a better suggestion.” his voice slid over my skin like silk.

“Better for whom?”

“Go out with me.”

His proposal stunned me for a second and then I found my voice.

“So better for you?”

“I like to think of it as a mutual enjoyment.”

“I fail to see how.”

He shifted, and his breath hit my face in warm puffs. “Go out with me and I’ll show you.”
