Synopsis
Duet: a performance by two.

But who is acting, and who is devolving?

A buried past is unearthed, and Grayson Sullivan - AKA The Angel of Maine - retaliates against the system who made him, deploying psychological warfare on the woman who initially set him free. Dr. London Noble probes deep into the mind of the killer she's fallen for, searching for answers, as a copycat killer threatens their unity. Are they partners, lovers, or enemies? One final trap will reveal all.

"Even the vilest of monsters deserve to be loved." -London

That quote pretty much sets the stage for the finale of London and Grayson's story. Do we really believe that everyone deserves love?

TWolfe dove into the minds of a killer, a criminal psychologist, and two law enforcement officers - I can't imagine the research she did for this story - and delivered a tantalizing, thought-provoking, mindf*ck of a story that couldn't have been a more perfect ending for London and Grayson.

Highlights:

  • Characters
London, having experienced the revelations brought to light in Born, Darkly must now learn to accept who she is in light of what she suffered and how it impacted her. And she must also deal with a new revelation about herself.
Grayson is so self-aware it's almost scary. However, he's unsure how to deal with the emotions London elicits having never experienced them before. Even Foster and Nelson, the law enforcement officers on Grayson's trail are so well developed that I wanted to crawl inside their heads to figure them out.
  • Thought-provoking
If the quote didn't already clue you in, this story makes you think. It's still rattling around in my head - things like nature versus nurture and fate. Whether criminals can be rehabilitated. If a killer deserves love.
  • Psychologically thrilling
TWolfe kept me guessing throughout. I was never certain what either London's or Grayson's next move was going to be. And the moves they made were often perplexing and chilling. There are many things that never would have occurred to me. That London and Grayson were in each other's head so deeply that they could seemingly feel each other's need was mind boggling.
  • Romance
London and Grayson's romance is so far from conventional that unconventional doesn't cover it. As Grayson said,
"We're inexorable. Inescapable."
"We're connected on some deeper level... Through bars and cages and prisons...in the physical sense and the mind. That's why you could never be expendable to me. You're my match."
Born, Madly rather blew me away. It's a story that will stick with me for a long while as I attempt to puzzle out the how's and why's. I'm still questioning whether I'm smart enough to figure it all out. I knew TWolfe would make this finale worth the wait. She didn't disappoint!

Synopsis
He challenged her sanity.

She shattered his reality.

They dared each other...to the brink of madness.

A dark and twisted maze awaits criminal psychologist London Noble when she falls for her patient, convicted serial killer, Grayson Pierce Sullivan. As she unravels the traps, her sanity tested with each game, she's forced to acknowledge the true evil in the world around her.

Oh, Ms. Wolfe! I've loved everything I've read from TWolfe so far and it's all had at least a little dark...but may I say how utterly thrilled I am that she's gone completely to the dark side? *shudders*

Okay, I have to say this wasn't really a shock, even though it was kinda a shock, that Wolfe went psycho...er, psychological thriller full on with Born, Darkly. She took most of the elements I've loved most from With Visions of Red and amp'd them full throttle. If y'all enjoy getting into the mind of a killer...well, one-click this baby RIGHT NOW. (Go ahead, I'll wait.)

In Born, Darkly we get to examine the mind of a killer, the mind of a doctor who enjoys digging around in killers' minds, doctor/patient relationships, and, well, the human condition. Omigosh, y'all! This is dark and lovely...well, mostly. I floved it!

In London, we have this renowned psychologist who's attempting to disengage the part of her practice that deals with criminals. But she agrees to take on one last challenge. She's brilliant really. She knows how to delve into a criminal mind - prides herself on it really - but she may have met her match in Grayson.

Grayson is referred to as The Angel of Maine. While he is a convicted killer, his victims are *not* good people. London is to help him with a new trial in a different state. Grayson's genius level intelligent and right off the bat he had me scratching my head over who had control in his sessions with London. He likes puzzles and he sees the ultimate one in London.

I can't explain what a mind f*ck this story is...in the very best of ways. It really is more of a psychological suspense story than a romance. *gasp* I know! I was hanging by a thread through most of it and it's gonna be a challenge waiting for the conclusion. However, I'm absolutely certain Wolfe will make it worth the wait.

**OctobeRec Fest Late Review ~ Consequences ~ Aleatha Romig**

I one-clicked Consequences after reading Braine @Talk Supe's review awhile back. (seriously, I one-clicked this on March 6, 2013!) Braine talked about what a "mind fluck" this book was. So I was intrigued. I started reading Consequences right before heading to Cincinnati for the Queen City Indie Con, because Aleatha Romig was attending. I got to meet her and she's sooo cool! I had to laugh when I was at her table as she had button swag for us and she picked up one that said "I Love Tony". When I told her I was reading Consequences, she said, "Oh, then you don't love Tony right now" and handed me a "I Hate Tony" button instead.

Braine, I can't thank you enough for turning me on to this series. I can't wait for the next "mind fluck"!

Synopsis

Every action has consequences.

Waking in an unfamiliar bedroom in a luxurious mansion, Claire Nichols is terrified to discover that a chance encounter led her into the cruel hands of her abductor, Anthony Rawlings. Claire has no understanding of why she's there, but it's been made abundantly clear - she is now his acquisition and every action has consequences.

Learn the rules to survive.

Facing incomprehensible circumstances, Claire must learn to survive her new reality - every aspect of her livelihood depends upon the tall, dark-eyed tycoon who is a true master of deception. Driven by unknown demons, he has no tolerance for imperfection, in any aspect of his life, including his recent acquisition. Anthony may appear to the world as a handsome, benevolent businessman, but in reality Claire knows firsthand that he's a menacing, controlling captor with very strict rules: do as you're told, public failure is not an option, and appearances are of the utmost importance.

Captivate the captor.

To fit together the pieces of the puzzle, Claire must follow his rules. Will her plan work, or will Anthony become enthralled by Claire's beauty, resilience, and determination, changing the game forever? If that happens, will either of them survive the consequences?

Nobody ever did or ever will escape the consequences of his choices. - Alfred A. Montapert

I think y'all know I appreciate twists in stories. Honestly, the twistier the better. Consequences - well, I don't think I've ever read more of a "mind fluck" than this. I've never finished a book with a WTF?? feeling like I had when I finished Consequences. And I loved it. I never knew what was coming. Oh, I knew something was coming, but I didn't know what. I was on edge for so much of the book just waiting for the other shoe to fall. And when it did, it was completely unexpected.

I like villains - those characters you love to hate. I have a new appreciation for villains like Anthony Rawlings. I despised him, the I warmed to him little by little. It never reached love or admiration - but when that shoe finally dropped, I felt duped. The I did admire him - for his evil ways. Tony is sooo good at being bad. I never could figure him out even though we got snippets from his POV. I didn't...couldn't understand his motivations. Although I now know, I still don't understand.

Claire - I did admire her resilience. At times, I felt she'd lost some of the inner strength she'd possessed. I couldn't comprehend how she didn't see how Tony was changing her. But truly, she was resilient in her coping. She managed the best she could - while being taking in by Tony's softer side. I feel under his spell, too. I wanted to believe. I smiled at the return of her backbone and dignity though.

The quotes at the chapter beginnings were masterfully used as clues. This was an incredible psychological thriller...dark and oh, so twisty. I did think it was clunky at times. Perhaps I didn't need all that information. Once I finished, I realized it was all necessary. It was needed to set up that WTF moment. Ms. Romig has now placed herself on my favorite authors list.
