**Sidekick Saturday #3 ~ Weird**

Sidekick Saturday
Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

This week, Jaclyn has chosen Weird as the theme. I had a hard time making a decision this week. I'm going with my first choice, but I'm gonna share my second choice with y'all as well. :)

My first choice for a Weird Sidekick is Alice Cullen, from Twilight. Alice is described as a pixie-like girl, tiny with tiny features. Her black hair is cut short with spikes going every which way. And she has her own well defined sense of fashion. ;) I always imagined Alice as flitting around, twinkling and tinkling, kinda like a fairy.

There are reasons for her weirdness, of course. She has visions  of the future and because of this, Edward kept Alice and Bella apart for as long as he could. Alice has a habit of saying cryptic things and Edward didn't want Alice sharing any of her visions with Bella - particularly those of Edward and Bella. Alice is also different from her family in that she has no recollection of her time as a human. And she was able to find her conscience, as a vampire, on her own.

Quotes:

"You do smell nice, I never noticed before. "

"It sounded like you were having Bella for lunch, and we came to see if you would share."

"It's been almost a century that Edward's been along. Now he's found you. You can't see the changes that we see, we who have been with him for so long. Do you think any of us want to look into his eyes for the next hundred years if he loses you?"

"For everyone else, the pain of transformation is the sharpest memory they have of their human life. I remember nothing of being human."

"Some things are more certain than others...like the weather. People are harder. I only see the course they're on while they're on it. Once they change their minds - make a new decision, no matter how small - they whole future shifts."

My second choice for today is Anna Pierce from Robyn Jones' A Touched Girl series. I love, love Anna. She is different...weird...but in such a wonderful way. Anna hasn't spoken since she was five, when she was offered nightmare-free sleep in exchange for her silence. Her silence came with the added benefit of the ability to see a person's future potential. Add her odd habits of touching and twirling, and well... Then, after 12 years of silence, a traumatic experience brings major changes to Anna's life, including finding her voice.

I ended up going with Anna as my second choice solely because if I hadn't read Twilight, I wouldn't have started reading paranormals, and therefore, I wouldn't have found the treasure of Robyn's series!

  1. I love the little fairy-vampire girl. She's my favorite in the series! I named my car Alice. She's a white Chevy, and the first time I saw her, Alice from Twilight and Alice from Wonderland popped in my head, so her name had to be Alice. Really love that you mention Anna as your 2nd choice as well because she truly is a strange and lovely bird too. These types of characters latch on to me and I want to keep them forever because their quirks make them so wonderful to me! Excellent picks :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. I love that you named your car Alice! I'm really happy to know I'm not the only one who names cars...mine's named Elphie...as in Elphaba from Wicked. Yes, I drive a green car. ;)

Alice and Anna are definitely the types of characters who stay with you forever. I'm forever indebted to Twilight for opening up a whole new world in books for me. And I'm indebted to you as well, for introducing me to Anna (and Robyn!). THANKS, Jaclyn!!

  2. My first thought went to Alice too! I love her. She has no reason to be so peppy, but there she is bouncing around bossing everyone around with a knowing smile on her face. And then you chose Anna! I love Anna. Can't help it. I'm working on a different series right now, but last night I had to dive back into Anna's world to check something. Then I had to tell myself to close the book because she draws me in. And she's strange for sure. I wonder how long it will take for my mom and sister to fire off with her as their pick for today. I'll be posting my sidekick tonight. Have a great weekend, Brandee.

    1. And that Alice is able to boss people around because of her quirks...love it! :)

Anna...yes, Anna kinda lives in my heart now, Robyn. I think about her and talk about her often. All her quirks are so endearing - and the way you write about them really drew me in. ;) I'm very much looking forward to seeing her story continue. Hmm, I feeling a re-read coming on... LOL

    1. Thanks, Andrea! I really credit Twilight for making me step out of my box reading-wise. And Alice is certainly one of my favorite characters from the series. :)

  4. I still haven't been able to come up with a weird sidekick :( But Alice is an excellent choice, Brandee. She is a little weird, in a cute and sometimes dangerous way.

Have a fantastic Monday and a beautiful week, Brandee!

    1. I had trouble too, Lexxie. But I talked about strange characters with my oldest daughter and she mentioned one from Harry Potter and that sparked my choices. LOL I loved Alice's character...she gets away with her cryptic-ness and bossiness, etc., because of her whimsical (ah, that's a great descriptive word for her!) personality. I hope you're having a fabulous week, Lexxie!
