Sky & I Review ~ Ethan Frome ~ Edith Wharton

Ethan FromeEthan Frome by Edith Wharton
Release Date: 1911
Genre: Classic American Fiction
Source: Kindle freebie
Rating: 4.5 Bookworms

Synopsis
Ethan Frome works his unproductive farm and struggles to maintain a bearable existence with his difficult, suspicious, and hypochondriac wife, Zeena. But when Zeena's vivacious cousin enters their household as a "hired girl", Ethan finds himself obsessed with her and with the possibilities for happiness she comes to represent.

In of of American fiction's finest and most intense narratives, Edith Wharton moves this ill-starred trio toward their tragic destinies. Different in both tone and theme from Wharton's other works, Ethan Frome has become perhaps her most enduring and most widely read novel.

Sky was reading this for school and since it was something I'd always meant to read, I grabbed a free copy and read it along with her. And since we both read it, and loved it, we thought we'd share our reviews with y'all.

***My Review***

I immensely enjoyed Ethan Frome. Wharton eloquently describes the New England landscape - especially as affected by winter. She also describes life in New England - especially as affected by winter - with aplomb. New England is rather harsh and unforgiving during the winter, where people were forced into a solitary existence as the cold kept them shut up. Life was also affected by technological advancement - like the railroad - which hurt small communities economically and socially.

As for Ethan Frome himself, well, he broke my heart. He grew up in Starkfield, MA, with a family in farming and lumber. Sickness and life in general took its toll on the Frome family. Ethan was called back from college when his mom took ill and that one even changed the course of his life. Ethan had dreams that were smothered. And when he finally found a passionate love, it was too late...his life was already cemented.

Some might say that Ethan deserved what happened to him. I say he was a victim of circumstance - of life. As Mrs. Hale said,
"You've had an awful mean time, Ethan Frome."
He did have an hard time of it. And I'm sure he suffered til the day he died.

***Sky's Review***

Those of you who said The Book Thief would be too depressing for you… that book didn’t even touch the level of this one. Ethan Frome started from rock bottom and somehow managed to get lower. It’s the sobering kind of depressing that makes you want to go stare at a wall for a few hours. It’s very harsh and deeply sad.
Ethan Frome is set in a little town called Starkfield, which is rather appropriately named. The story is set in the middle of bleak New England, around the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when there was no electricity outside of big cities and rural farmers struggled to eke out an existence while their urban counterparts worked in debilitating conditions in factories.

The main character of the story, Ethan Frome, is a relatively young man who has been saddled with tragedy throughout his entire life. Born into a poor family, he was forced to return to the destitute farm and mill in Starkfield by the death of his father. The slow decline of his mother’s health resulted in his requiring the assistance of a girl named Zenobia, whom he felt obligated to marry following the death of his mother. Zenobia, it turns out, was a proficient healer due to her own condition, and Ethan quickly discovered her to be in perpetually declining health, as well. Thus, Zenobia’s cousin, Mattie Silver, was brought into the house to help perform the basic tasks that Ethan’s wife was unable to. Here begins the real tragedy.
Ethan falls in love.

In the dreary and bare world that Wharton has created, I can’t help but believe that she has intentionally forced a harsh reality upon her readers. In Starkfield, as in much of the world, there are no happy endings. Each winter slowly whittles away what could have been the happiness and the prosperity of the town’s inhabitants, leaving behind the empty shells of people who have been absolutely gutted of emotion throughout their lives. Not even love, that bright light that refuses to fail in most stories, can escape the relentless winter. These peoples’ youth, innocence, joys, hopes, dreams, fantasies -- all are stolen by the years of Starkfield winter. In this book, there is no freedom. The characters are trapped in their situations, and even if they tried, they could not escape. In this book, there is no hope. The centripetal emotion of this story is despair.
This book is beautiful. Wharton’s depictions of New England scenery, the glorious Mattie through Ethan’s eyes, the quaint and charming neighbors of the Fromes -- these are all intensely gorgeous bits of the book that provide tantalizing glimpses of love and wonder throughout the narrative. However, although Wharton seems to support the idea that there is beauty even within the darkest depths of despair, in the end, her characters seem to have been destined for tragedy.

If you’re looking for a short, powerful, and sobering read, I would recommend this. Ethan Frome is a fantastic book because it makes you think, and it brings you out of your comfort zone. You are plunged into icy despair, but even though you’re drowning, you can see the light of the moon from below the water.

Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts #28

My pick this week for Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts is from:

Tiny Glitches by Rebecca Chastain

Y'all, I am loving this book!! It releases on January 12th!

***

Ari opened the microwave and pulled out a single piece of coffee cake on a napkin. My eyes latched on to the treat.
"Homemade?"
"Would I give you anything less?"
I snatched the cake from her hand and broke off a piece. Warm brown sugar and cinnamon melted on my tongue. I relaxed my hips against the counter and closed my eyes to savor the delicious flavors. Taking another bite without opening my eyes, I could feel the day's stresses floating away on a sugar haze.
I opened my eyes when I realized the kitchen was silent. Hudson eyed me like I was a piece of coffee cake, Antonio watched me with fond amusement, and Ari watched Hudson, a smirk on her face.
"Coffee cake turns her into putty," she said. Hudson started and glanced at Ari. She winked at him. "That's a secret a lot don't know. You're welcome."

And because I couldn't help myself...

"You found a coffee cake donut?"
"It seemed like your favorite flavor," Hudson said.

Release Day Review ~ Pregnant by the Rival CEO ~ Karen Booth

Pregnant by the Rival CEOPregnant by the Rival CEO by Karen Booth
Publisher: Harlequin
Release Date: January 5, 2016
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Source: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Rating: 4 Bookworms

Goodreads

Synopsis
It was just business. And then she got pregnant...

Anna Langford is ready to be CEO of the family business, but her brother won't give up control. When she sees the opportunity for a major deal, she goes for it, even though it means working with Jacob Lin, her brother's former best friend, the guy she's never quite gotten over--the man her brother now despises. A successful venture capitalist, Jacob makes ruthless moves. And Anna has given him the perfect chance to take revenge on her brother...

What starts as business turns into romance--until Anna learns of Jacob's motives. And an unplanned pregnancy presents them both with the greatest challenge they've ever faced.

I've read and enjoyed Karen Booth's novels before so when she asked if I'd review Pregnant by the Rival CEO, I quickly agreed. And Booth didn't disappoint. While Pregnant by the Rival CEO differed from the previous novels I'd read (those were aging rock star romances) she proved that she can deliver compelling characters no matter the setting and a pleasurable story as well.

Anna Langford and Jacob Lin shared an easy friendship and one kiss ages ago. But since Jacob's best friend was Anna's brother, Adam, he rebuffed Anna's advances. Then Jacob and Adam's friendship hit the skids and Anna thought she'd never see him Jacob again. Six years later, Jacob appears back in her life as she tries to land a business deal that will cement her place as CEO of her family's company.

I am completely delighted with this story. Booth delivered fairly robust characters in Anna, Jacob, and Adam. Anna is no shrinking violet. She knows what she wants and sets out to get it - in both business and pleasure. Jacob, despite being ruthless in his career, is an honorable man. And Adam seems exactly as overprotective and overbearing as any older brother would be. The business dealings felt very realistic as well - right along with the tension Anna felt in thinking of how Jacob and Adam would react to one another. The romance developed at a nice pace - as did the whole story. And I felt the predicament Anna and Jacob found themselves in - an unexpected prenancy - was also portrayed realistically.

Pregnant by the Rival CEO is a feel-good romance. It's a quick read with the perfect blend of drama and romance. And I'm left very curious about Anna's brothers, Adam (who has his own book already) and Aiden. I'm looking forward to getting better acquainted with the Langford family.

Review ~ Masters for Life ~ Ginger Voight

Masters for Life (Masters Saga, #2)Masters for Life by Ginger Voight

Synopsis
DISCLAIMER: This book is part of a series. Spoilers might be contained in the description. For new readers, start your journey with Devlin and Coralie in Masters for Hire, now available everywhere!

They were two completely different people from two completely different worlds. Within two weeks they were married, for better or worse.

Their whirlwind romance did nothing to prepare Coralie Masters for what awaited the happy couple back home. Reality crushes the fairytale existence Devlin had created for her in Las Vegas. Ultimately his powerful seductive hold over her cannot protect her from new, powerful forces outside of their marriage that work nonstop to tear them asunder.

There is much more to fear than her family learning the truth of how and why they met, because there's much more to Dev's story that she could ever know. The mystery surrounding Devlin Masters quickly undermines their love story.

One thing becomes crystal clear. They may be married, but she doesn't really know this sexy, alluring stranger at all.

They love each other. They want each other. They can't stay away from each other.

But will it be enough?

The Groupie Saga titillated you. The Fullerton Family Saga broke your heart. We were only getting started. Book Two of the Masters Saga, Masters for Life, turns up all the Ginger Voight angst, drama and sex like never before.

**Author not responsible for broken Kindles.**

Intended for readers 18+ for graphic sexual content.

Oh the angst! Oh the drama! Coralie's life definitely took a turn towards the chaotic when she met Devlin Masters.

Masters for Life sees Coralie and Devlin trying to settle into their new life together while simultaneously making plans for the future. Coralie still has dreams for herself and her company. Devlin has plans as well but as he's not an open book by any stretch of the imagination, it's hard to know what his true plans are.

And, of course, there are obstacles. In fact, there are quite a few things standing in between them and their HEA. Their courtship was crazy fast and trust seems a sticking factor. And as things come to light and events occur, it seems Devlin may be the biggest obstacle. New players are introduced and the stakes are very high indeed.

I have to say that at times some of the angst and drama were a bit too much for me. There were so many times I wanted to shake both Coralie and Devlin. Or tell them to grow up. Their feelings for one another - their chemistry - is undeniable. But can they both move past the past and get over the hangups and insecurities to truly trust one another? That's the million dollar question.

Voight has spun a riveting story around Coralie and Devlin. I'm dying to know what happens next - especially after that ending. I'm fully invested in them and seeing their story to fruition despite the melodrama. One thing I've always appreciated about Voight's stories are the unconventional heroines. Coralie is one of those heroines, not fitting the standard of beauty which matters greatly since her family's business is in fashion. I relate to Coralie in certain ways and am enjoying seeing her blossom. Devlin is still such an enigma. He has quite a story that he seems unwilling, or at least very reluctant, to share. But I *need* to know. Some of the events though...I'm not sure he can talk his way out of. We'll see.

Voight also provides an interesting supporting cast, although we see less of Lucy and Gus, Gretchen, and Coralie's father, than in book one. I do like how Voight manages to weave in  cameos of characters from her other series as well. They all add a little something to the story as well as adding to the character development.

Even though some of the drama was a little much for me, I'm kinda tied up in knots over what comes next for Coralie and Devlin. It's a really good thing book #3, Masters Forever, is already available.

Happy New Year, y'all! I know I've been scarce around the blogosphere but I took this last week to spend time with my kiddos and my hubs since I was working for most of their time off. I don't get to spend much time with my family when we aren't rushing to this or that event - of they're just plain not here. Hubs & I took the kids to see the new Star Wars movie (which was the bomb!) and then took them shopping so they could spend a little of their Christmas loot. We've had family movie nights, gone snowshoeing, skiing, and I've let my younger daughter practice driving. O_O  We've all had a really good time and I've enjoyed getting some quality time in with them all.

Hubs goes back to work tomorrow and the kids go back to school on Wednesday. I'll be back to my regularly scheduled programming this week...getting back on track with my daily schedule and exercise! And I'll be around to catch up with y'all!

#TravelingtoTerminus Review ~ Twist ~ Dannika Dark

Twist (Mageri, #2)Twist by Dannika Dark
Mageri #2
Release Date: February 26, 2012
Genre: Adult, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Source: Purchased paperback
Rating: 5 Bookworms
Goodreads

Synopsis
Months after moving to the mysterious city of Cognito, Silver is developing her gifts as a Marge and learning how to live under new laws. She is forced to give up her old life and live in secret among the humans. There is finally hope of leading an ordinary life...

Until Logan Cross walks into it.

Their chance meeting leads her close to discovering the identity of the nameless Mage who once stole her light and discovered the unique power she possesses. That knowledge poses an unimaginable threat to Silver, fueling the search to find out who he is before he finds her.

Lives are at stake. Truths are revealed. And an unexpected passion ignites.

"An outspoken woman makes the world a livable place. You have fire in you, and I would never put that out."

Oh, Ms. Dark! How I love your stories! Twist is such an amazing blend of action, suspense, an introduction to different Breed, and *sigh* romance, that I had to force myself to put the book down and do things that needed doing. ;)

Silver's life has settled down a bit now that the threat Samil posed has been neutralized. But Justus and Simon are still on the trail of 'the benefactor', and when Silver decides to help, things don't stay calm for long. Then there is the appearance of Logan Cross and he really heats things up.

Ms. Dark did a phenomenal job at weaving in new characters, new plot threads, and a whole lot of action into the overarching plot. It was exciting learning more about Breed and the Breed world - their customs and laws. And I like that Ms. Dark seems to be making a social statement about acceptance and tolerance - something I'm eager to see developed further as the series progresses.

Ms. Dark also deftly creates rich and complex characters. Silver is a kickass heroine whom I adore. She's flawed but has a heart of gold and a sassy mouth. Justus is the perfect mentor for Silver and I know he'd do anything for her. I do hope we get more insight into his aversion to any kindness shown to him from those he cares for. Simon keeps me in stitches but I know there's deeper layers to him as well and although he's not a central character, I hope to dig a little deeper with him as well. Adam will always hold a special place in my heart for having taken dare of Silver when she was most vulnerable. He irritated me at times but I understood the intentions behind his actions...usually. I'm grateful that he's still in Silver's life. And that brings me to Logan... Although the circumstances of their meeting were dubious, I agree with Silver in that he's a man of worth. I'd never have guessed I was such a sucker for chivalry but Logan proved just that. He stood by, behind, and in front of Silver when warranted, and he won me over.

The action in Twist put Silver and company closer to capturing 'the benefactor' but there were setbacks. It all involved some white-knuckling and I was happy that everyone survived. I'm eager to see 'the benefactor' get his due but appreciated Justus' advice to Silver not to let vengeance rule your life. That's a good lesson.

I'm anxious to continue with Silver as she learns more life lessons in her new world as a Mage. I feel a binge coming on...
