#ShelfLove ~ Perils of Book Hoarding

This month, I'm talking about the Perils of Book Hoarding. :) I believe y'all know I'm a hoarder when it comes to books. Both physical copies and digital copies...I have more books than I know what to do with. Alright, alright...I *do* know what to do with them. Finding the time is my issue...

Here are just a few of the perils of hoarding books.

As you can see, room on the shelves is an issue...

.:

Unfortunately, I don't always hesitate...

If you look closely, you'll see two, yes TWO, books by the same title. Ugh!

And finally, as you can see from the photo above of my physical shelves AND the ones below of my ereaders and the total number of books I have on each, the biggest peril of book hoarding is having *TOO MANY* choices when it comes to picking my next read. ;)

Review ~ Gone Girl ~ #2015HW #ShelfLove #COYER

Gone GirlGone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Release Date: April 22, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Thriller
Source: Purchased paperback
Rating: 3.5 Bookworms
Goodreads

Synopsis
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with the cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of is wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?

Provocative. There are so many things I could say about Gone Girl but it all boils down to that one word. Since this book has been around, and was even made into a movie, I'm not going to rehash it all. Besides, to do so might ruin the experience for any of you who haven't read it or seen it. I'm going to talk about how it made me feel.

Gone Girl is divided into 3 parts, alternating POVs between Amy and Nick.

Part One (which has a title much better than Part 1)
In this first section, Flynn did well in creating empathy for Amy and a somewhat antipathetic feeling towards Nick. I enjoyed seeing how it all began for this couple as well as getting a feel for Amy and Nick separately.

Part Two
In part 2, I learned appearances can be deceiving, and that you don't always know everything you think you know about a person.

Part Three
I decided that Amy and Nick were perfect for one another. They deserved everything they dished out at the other.

Flynn's story was disturbing, not only in what it said about marriage - how well do you ever really know someone? - but I felt it also made statements about society - the media, the legal system, how wrapped up people can become in it all - and human nature - the line between insanity and genius. I was emotionally disturbed, physically disgusted, and honestly, I'm not sure I've ever read a book where I couldn't stand either of the MCs. Portions of the ending were a bit trite (I can see Amy sneering at me for that) but otherwise, Gone Girl is a tautly written story and I have to give props to Flynn for compelling me to read about awful people.

I recommend Gone Girl if you enjoy stories that make you think, evoke intense negative emotions, and engage you with morally circumspect characters. It was an interesting read to be sure.

Bought, Borrowed, & Bagged #70

Bought, Borrowed, & Bagged is a weekly meme, hosted by TalkSupe, where I share with you the books I have bought, borrowed, or bagged (gifted or won) plus a recap of the previous week's reviews, upcoming reviews, and any other bookishness I want to share. :)

***

I picked up a few this week. Not too many but a few of the deals were just too good to pass up! ;) It's been a busy week around here. And fall is settling in. Yesterday's high was only 60. Perfect for curling up with a good book, a cup of tea, and a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin!

Did y'all have a good week? Pick up any good deals that I should know about?!?

The Driven Series Boxed Set - Limited Edition (Books 1-4)Killing Hemingway: (A coming-of-age novel about life, decisions, love, and genius.)Breathe (Songs of Submission, #10)A Stone in the Sea (Bleeding Stars, #1)Five Weeks (Seven, #3)Four Days (Seven, #4)Three Hours (Seven #5)

I picked up Driven Collection thanks to Anna @Herding Cats and Burning Soup. Thanks, Anna! It's specially priced at only $4.99 for a limited time. Killing Hemingway was a freebie. Breathe was a pre-order and if you have *not* read CD Reiss' Songs of Submission series, this is the perfect place to start...even if it is #10 in the series. It's meant as a jumping off point for the series. (*ahem* BRAINE!) at Half Price for $7 each...or rather, hubs bought them for me. :) A Stone in the Sea was on sale for only *99 cents* and I've been dying to read it, so *click* I did. And lastly, I'm binge-reading Dannika Dark's Seven series, y'all! It's so freaking good. I'm addicted. So I picked up Five Weeks (which I've already finished), Four Days (which I've also finished), and Three Hours (which I'm currently listening to) from Audible using my credits. And I've begun to think that maybe I need to upgrade my Audible membership. ;)

Bagged

Nada. And that's just fine.  ;)

Synopsis
How far would you go to set yourself free?

Drake Blackwell is successful, controlling, and hiding a violent family past. He just made his latest investment: Noriko.

Imported from Japan and wed to a stranger, Noriko struggles to stick to the rules of a Good Wife. Drake can't seem to love her, not the way she wants to be loved. She dreams of freedom beyond the gates of Blackwell Manor.

She meets Keir, a passionate young gardener who shares her desire to break free. He gets under her skin and ignites a fire in her she can't ignore. In the midst of her quiet desperation she thinks she has found happiness. And a glimpse of hope.

But this affair can't last...can it?

Although part of a series, this is a standalone novel with no cliffhanger.

WARNING: For ages 18+. There are scenes in this novel that infer or allude to physical violence.

After reading and enjoying Ms. Peach's Bound series, I jumped at her offer to review Girl Wife Prisoner. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it as much as I was hoping to. While I found the premise intriguing, I felt the execution of it could have been stronger.

Noriko is a young Japanese girl newly arrived in the U.S. She finds herself moving into a grand home complete with a staff and luxuries she couldn't have imagined. But there is a price for all these amenities. See, Noriko is a purchased bride. Her husband, Drake, is older. He's rich...insanely rich. He's also surrounded by rumors and suspicions concerning the death of his parents. And then there is Keir, the young gardener. He is smitten with Noriko until he realizes who she is. Once they become better acquainted though, he comes to understand she's not who he thought she was.

Like I said, the premise really captured my attention. And Ms. Peach created compelling characters. But I'd have preferred more backstory and character development. I didn't feel very connected to any of the characters. Noriko was a rather feisty and outspoken young woman. While I admire that in a heroine, it wasn't what I'd expect from a timid, young Japanese girl. She also vacillated between behaving maturely and very childishly. This was probably realistic considering she wasn't even eighteen but it had me curious as to who the real Noriko was. Drake, who would be considered the villain, wasn't developed enough for me to revile him. I didn't like him - he's distant, aloof, and doesn't always treat Noriko very well, but I never feared him. Yes, he did purchase a young bride. Yes, he wouldn't allow Noriko outside the walls of his compound. Yes, he showed hints he could be violent. But he was also tender with Noriko at times. Keir, who was my favorite character, was young and idealistic. He would have made a better match for Noriko under different circumstances. He does care for her and wants to protect her, even at the risk of dire consequences for himself. There is a spark between them that is obvious. But Noriko is tied to Drake.

I did enjoy the mystery surrounding Drake and how it played out between the characters. The knowledge of what had happened and the suspicions aimed at Drake did have me worrying for Noriko and Keir at times. I also liked the motivations behind Noriko's circumstances. It made her 'sale' feel not so despicable - at least on her part. I had several moments of heartbreak for Noriko, too. It seemed a pity she had to endure all she did. And then Ms. Peach threw a curve ball where I wondered just how many layers this girl had.

Overall, there were elements I liked and elements that could have been better. The story was good but better character development would have made it gripping.

Synopsis
ONE movie star on the cusp of greatness
ONE broken girl who touched him
TEN years to forget her
A MILLION stories in Hollywood
----------------
I am not hurt.

I don't need a second chance with him, or a life I thought I had.

While he was out forgetting me to become a movie star, I was building a career out of nothing. A career as a paparazzi, but a career. For a foster kid who bounced around every home in Los Angeles, that wasn't easy.

This camera is all I have.

He's nothing to me. Every time I take his picture and sell it, I remind myself that I did it all without him or his approval, his cinnamon smell or his clear green eyes. He lights up the screen like a celestial body, but he's nothing but a paycheck to me.

He can throw my camera off a balcony, and nothing has to change. We can stay king and queen of the same city, and different worlds.

Except this is Hollywood, and here, anything can happen.

It's no secret I'm a fan of Reiss' writing. I know that when I open up a book from her I'm going to get beautiful prose, a well-conceived and wonderfully wrought story, intense emotions, and amazing characters. ShutterGirl is set outside the Drazen family, so it's different than any of her previous works. But Reiss delivered on all counts.

Laine and Michael come from two different worlds. He's an A-list Hollywood actor. She's the bane of every celebrity - a paparazza. He was born into privilege. She was born into the system. His life was mapped out at birth - a rising star. Her life seemed destined for a downward path. They couldn't be more different. But a year spent at a prep school together - a year when Laine's foster parents were rich - left an indelible mark on each of them. A mark that sparks when they happen to meet again.

Reiss does an excellent job of making sense of these characters who don't make sense - at least on the surface. That their second chance at love accompanies them each learning so much about themselves was a treat. Laine is such a survivor. She picked herself up off the ground and made a decent life for herself. But she had to learn to accept all the parts of herself and she had to forgive herself to move onto the next chapter. Michael, who's spent a large portion of his life pretending to be someone else - pretending at life - has to figure out who hs really is and own it. Being witness to it all was addicting - kinda like tabloids. I couldn't stop watching as it all played out.

ShutterGirl left me in awe. It's a riveting, entertaining Hollywood story with a side of second chance love. Go ahead and grab a copy. You know your enquiring mind wants to know! ;)

Synopsis

Jim Carney has a full time job--running from himself. Since he walked out on his wealthy family at sixteen because he'd wrecked his best friend's life over some yaoi graphic novels, Jim has lived a macho, blue-collar existence of too much booze and too little responsibility. Then Billy Ballew, the man Jim most admires, gives Jim a chance to come through as his construction supervisor. For once, Jim is determined to make someone proud. Then Jim goes in for a physical for his new job and his yaoi dream comes to life in the form of cardiologist Ken Tanaka. Jim discovers he has two heart problems--a wonky mitral valve and a serious attraction to his doctor. But Ken is a major player, and Jim might be just a notch on the doc's stethoscope. To Ken, Jim is unforgettable--but the living embodiment of his traditional family's worst nightmares.

How come the minutes Jim decides to be responsible, he finds himself taking care of his kid brother, getting a proposal from a wealthy woman, making a deal with the devil, and winding up in the hospital--when all he really wants is the Knave of Broken Hearts?

***

Lexxie: What did you think? I have to admit I was very surprised that Jim was the main character in Knave of Broken Hearts, but then, thinking back, he was supportive of Billy straight away, and he seemed very open-minded. And as the story unfolded, it was less strange to have Jim be the second construction worker who was into guys. And Ken *sighs* he was a really, really good character as well! I think one of the reasons why he was a player was because of all the pressure from his mom. And the one guy she did manage to set him up with was such a total scumbag!

Ian totally broke my heart, though. And I was so happy that Jim managed to step up and take him in. I have never understood parents who can just throw their kids out like that. Like really? My oldest daughter had a friend in school whose parents threw him out when he came out to them, and I had so much trouble wrapping my head around that. My children are precious, and no matter whom they may fall in love with can change how much I love them! Also, it's not really important that I like the person they will spend their lives with, what's important is that they find the right person for them, and that they will be as happy as possible together.

One of the things I really enjoyed was all the changes Jim went through, from being the guy who drank too much - possibly to forget or make himself not think at all about not really wanting to be with a woman - to one who took on responsibilities at work, and also with his brother. Ian being quite a bit younger than Jim worked really well for me as well, because they could help each other - seeing things from different perspectives is always good.

I would have loved to actually see a little more of Shaz and Billy, even if it was great to see their wedding, and then know that they went on their honeymoon.

What did you think? I loved Knave of Broken Hearts even more than Knight of Ocean Avenue :)

Me: I have to admit that it didn't occur to me that Jim might also be gay. I thought he just happened to be this really open-minded blue-collar guy. And I liked that about him. Finding out he was gay just made me admire him all the more. The way he'd taken on life - even if it was guilt that drove him - and the things he accomplished, were pretty amazing. He made himself out to be this slacker of a guy, but I never felt that way about him. I felt like it was an image he was trying to perpetuate with the crew. I did like watching him open up and be more himself. You're right in that he probably drank in order to bury the fact that he didn't really want to be with a woman...and then to have an excuse when he couldn't 'perform'. But his taking on the responsibilities Billy handed him as well as taking in his brother left me feeling warm all over. Because that's who Jim really was.

And Ken...yeah, I really liked him as well. I fell for him when he caught Jim on the dance floor. *sigh* He'd accomplished quite a bit in his young life and while I admired him, I felt for him since it seemed as though so much of what he did was driven by his mother. I did appreciate the fact that his mother was accepting of him but she did have very poor taste in potential partners for her son. That guy...ugh! He was young and smarmy, wasn't he? And he ended up being far worse than I'd thought.

I loved Ian as well. In fact, I'm hoping we get more about him. :) I'm glad that he had Jim to turn to even if they hadn't been that close. He seems like a really bright young man and I was glad he was there for Jim to talk to - it was heartwarming that they had something so major to bond over.

As for Jim & Ian's dad...he's the scummiest of scum. To turn his children out for their perceived 'flaws'. And then use them for his own gain?!? Not good parent material. AT.ALL. You have children because you want to love and cherish them, nurture them, and provide them with an unconditional love only parents can give. So I don't understand anyone treating their child like this. It breaks me heart and enrages me all at the same time. You're so right...we don't have to like who our child falls in love with...we need to be happy that they're happy with whomever they choose.

One thing I really liked about Knave of Broken Hearts was that Lain put together these two guys who not only seemed to live in two different worlds - blue-collar vs white-collar - but also from two different cultures. So not only were they battling a society who isn't always accepting and different social strata, but Jim had the dubious task of winning over Ken's "Tiger" mom who seemed deeply rooted in Japanese traditions.

I would have liked to have seen more of Billy and Shaz, too. But I was happy that we got to see them at their wedding. And I was really glad Billy was there for Jim.

I do want to say that I felt there was something missing between Jim and Ken. I don't know what it is - maybe there wasn't as much sexual tension between them as there was between Billy and Shaz. I'm not sure. But I didn't feel like I was there with them yet at the end. I wanted a little more build-up, I guess. And I wish there'd been more exploration of both sets of parents. I'm willing to bet there's something about Jim and Ian's dad that he doesn't want out in the open. And Ken's parents...I didn't feel the closeness between him and his mom that would have helped me better understand why he went along with her wishes. (maybe this is a cultural difference for me?) Also, his dad never said anything. What were his feelings about his son?

Overall, I really enjoyed KoBH. But there was a little something missing for me that made it not quite as enjoyable as KoOA.

So when is the next on releasing?!? ;) I hope you're willing to buddy read #3 with me, my friend! It adds a whole other level to reading pleasure when I get to share it with you! <3

I did not think for a second that Jim was gay while I was reading Knight of Ocean Avenue, so we were both just feeling as if he was a very open-minded guy. I didn't find him to be a slacker either, just unhappy, and therefore drinking too much. The way he couldn't get things gong with his girlfriend and knowing he wasn't treating her right because he wasn't completely honest with her - or himself - must have been hard to live with.

Ken and Jim on the dance floor *Sighs* yeah, I thought that first meeting was very sweet and telling. His mom was too much of a meddler for me, like only someone Japanese could be good enough for her son - only based on nationality and nothing else. I didn't like that guy at all, and actually found Ken to be very understanding and nice - even if that really didn't work so well for him.

Ian needs his own book! The way he was so open with Jim and other people made me love him straight away. Jim and Ian's dad was definitely a scumbag, yeah. And there was one comment between the brothers that made me think we just might read more about the dad in the future, too...

More different than Ken and Jim would have been quite difficult to come up with, I think. And I don't actually think Ken was all that close to his mom, I think he was so used to the Japanese way of respecting elders, and following his parents lead that he just did that without question. Even when he felt like he should tell her to stop her machinations, he just couldn't because he had been raised differently. I think some cultures have much stronger traditions when it comes to respecting parents, and obeying parents - even after the children are adults.

I loved Ken and Jim from the very start, and the way they ran into each other by chance, and then on purpose made me feel like them getting together was inevitable, and I loved it :) And while I loved Shaz and Billy, I enjoyed Jim and Ken even more, actually :)

Prince of Playhouse is scheduled to be released in April 2016, and of course I'll buddy read it with you, my dear :)

*HUGS*

I just read a quote today - something to the effect that it's so much easier to just do as you're expected to. That made me think of Ken because you're right. It wasn't so much that he was close to her...it was just easier to do what was expected. Only it wasn't in this one case.

I agree that Ian should have his own book - I hope he does. He's adorable! And I know what comment you're talking about...yeah, it made me think too. I'm interested to see if anything comes from that.

So you enjoyed Jim and Ken more, huh? I'm still a Billy and Shaz fan...there was something about their story that resonated with me. Oh, I'm thinking it was Shaz putting Billy's mom in her place. ;) LOL

It's going to be hard to wait for Prince of Playhouse but I look forward to buddy reading it with you. :)

“Have you thought about me?” I ask. “Since last night at the show? Because I’ve thought about you.”

“What did you think about me? That I’m your next victim?”

“No, actually.” I smooth down the blanket on the ground of the shed and then step towards her, taking her face in my hands and pulling her tight against my chest. “I’ve thought about your hot breath as you panted against my cock when I was standing on your chair. I thought about your upturned eyes, looking at me if I ever got the chance to get you on your knees.”

She gulps air.

“Now tell me what you’ve been thinking about. Because you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t want to be.”

“We’re locked in,” she whispers as my mouth moves in closer.

I kiss her softly. No tongue, just a small, tender kiss that makes girls melt. “You have a phone, Tiffy. One call to your BFF, Claudio, and you’re free.”

She stares at me.

“But even though I might be the biggest prick you ever met, you want me, don’t you.”

She swallows hard.

“And I want you. That’s why we’re here. I want you. So if you don’t feel the same way, now’s your chance to say so.”

“I want…” She stops. There was a word on her lips, but I’m almost certain it was not my name. Jealousy heats me up in a millisecond. What kind of girl has another man’s name on her tongue when she’s gazing up into my eyes?

“What?” I say sharply. “What were you gonna say?”

“I want to be irresistible. Like you.”

“What?” I have to admit, I’m surprised. And then I laugh. “Are you a virgin?”

“I’m twenty-six, asshole. I’m not a fucking virgin.”

“Then what do you mean? I’m confused.”

“You’re just…” She sighs. “So good at this stuff. Seduction, right? I’m bad at it.”

“Who do you want to seduce?” My jealous rage is back.

“No one. Not specifically. But you’re so confident. And I’m so… not. I feel like I should take notes.”

It’s my turn to sigh. “What, you want me to teach you how to seduce someone?” The irony is not lost.

“Well, look. I hate you. I really do. You had me grabbing your cock last night and then I got accused of sexually harassing you. You made me feel like an idiot in that meeting with your plans and proposals. And now I’m up in your sex den, and I’m not sure what’s happening.” She looks at me with pleading eyes. “Tell me how you get all this control. How do you do it?”

I think about this for a few seconds, and then take a calculated risk. “How many blowjobs have you given in your life, Tiffy?”

“What?” She laughs, putting her hand over her heart like the word ‘blowjob’ is an assault on her virtue.

“Any?”

“I’ve given… one,” she admits, and then averts her eyes.

I’m turned on again. “One? One is not enough. If you want to know how to control a man, you don’t need to look any further than your own mouth. Men are drawn to lips. Every girl they ever think about sexually starts with an image of their cock in that girl’s mouth. So if you want control, you gotta lead a guy to your mouth.”

She takes a deep breath. “Go on.”

God, why am I so annoyed that she’s asking me for pointers? I can make her do anything I want right now. I should be celebrating.

“Please,” she begs. “Tell me.”

I place a hand on her shoulder and push. “Get on your knees.”

It's been awhile since I posted - mostly because I was on vacation but also because I hadn't been hauling in any books. ;) But there have been a few...because I can't seem to pass up freebies sometimes. :) Oh, and while we were in Dallas visiting my hub's family, he took me to Half Price Books. I picked up a few books while I was there. My older daughter asked "What happened to your no-book-buying ban?" I told her that when Dad offers to take me shopping for books, anything he buys for me doesn't count. Am I right?!?

How have y'all been? I feel like it's been soooo long.....

ConfessJane's Harmony (Jane's Melody, #2)Rule (Songs of Corruption, #3)River's Recruit (Sanctuary, #1)One Wilde Night (Immortal Vegas, #0.5)Sideswiped (The Peri Reed Chronicles, #0.5)Lick (Stage Dive, #1)Six Months (Seven, #2)

I picked up Confess and Jane's Harmony at Half Price for $7 each...or rather, hubs bought them for me. :) Rule was a preorder for me...I *must* know how it all ends for Theresa and Antonio. I one-clicked River's Recruit for *FREE* after reading Lorna's review @Rabid Reads. I one-clicked One Wilde Night for *FREE* after reading Braine's review of Getting Wilde @Talk Supe. One Wilde Night is the prequel novella for the series. I one-clicked Sideswiped because, well, it's from Kim Harrison and I'm so excited to see her *new* stuff! :) I picked up Lick (which I've already finished) and Six Months (which I'm currently listening to) from Audible using my credits.
