Wanted
by Amanda Lance
Release Date: May 2013
From Limitless Publishing
Summary from Goodreads:
Considering she’s a girl who calculates everything, Addie Battes knew the statistical probability of being abducted in her lifetime—too bad she never analyzed the odds of falling in love with her captor.
While stopping at a crowded rest area one summer night, seventeen-year-old Addie accidentally catches a truck hijacking in progress. Desperate to rid the crime of its only witness, one of the thieves kidnaps Addie. Yet surprisingly, when a renegade thief attempts to silence her for good, Addie is saved by the very man who abducted her. Now, forced on board a cargo ship in the middle of the ocean, Addie finds herself surrounded by international smugglers who want nothing more than to throw her overboard.
All except the artistic and intriguing Charlie Hays, whose strange protectiveness convinces Addie to trust him, even when common sense tells her otherwise. Yet, despite her doubt, and his unrelenting temper, their relationship develops into something much more. But, Charlie’s scorned colleague has stowed away, and as he seeks revenge against his coworker, Addie and Charlie are forced to put their new love—and lives—at risk.

My Review
Wanted is a love story at it's heart. A love story fraught with danger. A love set against impossible odds. A love story that left me feeling pretty satisfied. :)
Having read Lucy Christopher's Stolen and C.J. Roberts' Captive in the Dark, the story line of Wanted felt familiar...a young woman abducted, enduring trauma and developing feelings for her abductor. However, Ms. Lance made the story fresh.
Adeline "Addie" Battes is a 17 year old girl who's lived a somewhat sheltered life. She was homeschooled and is most comfortable being alone with her books. She's extremely bright, studious and logical. Despite having recently lost her mom and having to take care of her dad, she's plucky. She's also terribly curious, which leads to problems.
Charles "Charlie" Hays is a self-proclaimed bad man. He's done things in his life he's not proud of. He makes his living in an illegal manner. He's never gotten close to anyone or wanted something. Then he meets Addie.
I thoroughly enjoyed Wanted. I liked the fate aspect that seemed to determine the circumstances under which Addie and Charlie meet. I liked Ms. Lance's use of fate to skirt around the issue of Stockholm Syndrome as well. I also enjoyed watching Charlie's character growth throughout the book. Although at times he slips, he seems to want to change for Addie. Addie's growth was interesting as well. She's such a creature of logic and control - counting breaths or noises to stay in control - she learns to give in to emotion. Whether that's a good thing is debatable.
Ms. Lance created a colorful cast of supporting characters. Reid, Yuri, Polo and Ben all make their marks on the story. And I love a strong group of supporting characters. This group certainly enriched the story.
The ending was left a bit open so there may be a sequel. If so, I'll be picking it up. I'd like to see where Ms. Lance takes these two next. But if not, I have my own theories! :)

It's great that the author could make this premise her own. Wanted seems like a very engrossing story.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Definitely seems like impossible odds and I'm interested how she made this one work. I love how Addie is so analytical and how you mention that she's counting breaths and such. As you know, I'm also a sucker for the supporting cast :D Excellent review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.
