Synopsis
The sole remaining member of the most famous shifter hunter family in history, Owen Nightingale is a mercenary and a man with a secret held in his closely guarded heart, but when a beautiful rare shifter catches his eye and offers him a job, he has the feeling he'll be the one paying for helping her--with his heart.
Cait is in a spot of trouble with a capital T. A male hellcat has set his sights on claiming her and she's one kitty who doesn't want a collar. When she meets a dark, alluring and mysterious hunter, she sees a chance to rid herself of the male, but the price Owen sets and the fierce passion that burns white-hot between them lures her dangerously under his seductive spell.
Can Owen discover the true intent of the male hellcat and stop Cait from falling into his hands? And can Cait retain control as the heat of desire burns between her and Owen, or will a reckless moment seal both of their fates forever?
Heaton continues to dazzle me with her robust characters and richly detailed world. Although Bitten by a Hellcat had a slightly different feel, which I think is due to the female MC being the one with the initial mating compulsion along with a lack of action and adventure, I was still riveted -- anxious to know how it would all come together.
Cait is a hellcat. She's rather rare and therefore is coveted by male hellcats as well as those who'd use her for their own devices. When she happens into Underworld on night after a particularly nasty fight with a male hellcat, she finds herself drawn to Owen Nightingale. And Owen's profession is one that is coming in handy at the moment.
Owen is a hunter -- one from a renowned family of hunters. Basically he's a mercenary. When Cait hustles onto the dance floor, he can't seem to take his eyes off her. When she approaches him about a job, he quickly accepts. But there's more going on than just a professional relationship here.
Since this is a novella, the bulk of the story revolves around the development of the bond between Cait and Owen. The action and adventure the Eternal Mate couples typically engage in is something I enjoy, but this story didn't suffer from the lack of it. That's not to say there isn't any action. There certainly is and one scene involved a cameo from Bleu. *sigh* But I digress. :) There is action and Heaton once again shows her strength in choreographing such scenes. She also flexes her muscle in the vivid detailing of her world -- the fae town and Hell. And let's not forget Cait and Owen themselves. Heaton is very adept at creating characters you feel you know and become very invested in.
Man! I adore this series! I'm so grateful to Berls and Carmel for introducing me to it. I'm eager to begin the next in the series, Taken by a Dragon, and ever hopeful we'll get Bleu's story soon. *hint hint*
I've heard about that series but never read it. I have some of her #1 books in two other series, Vampire erotic theatre and Her angel - just moved them up my list :)
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing Felicity's books at the library and think that I should read them. One day... ONE DAY...
ReplyDeleteI need to read this series. I've come across so many extremely flattering reviews, my curiosity is practically boiling inside me, lol. Beautiful review, Brandee. Have a beautiful weekend! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ramona. I have to give credit to Berls @Fantasy is More Fun and Carmel @Rabid Reads for introducing me to the series. I'm very grateful and am enjoying it very much. I hope you're enjoying your weekend! :)
ReplyDeleteYES! Pick up the first one from the library, Marilyn. You'll be hooked! It isn't a series I can read back to back - I need time in between. But I adore the characters and their stories. :)
ReplyDeleteI've read the first in her Vampire Erotic series and I own the first in her Angel series but haven't gotten to it yet. I really like her style and ability to convey the setting plus create such complex characters. I think you'd enjoy this series!
ReplyDeleteI'm psyched that you're still enjoying this series, Brandee! I think this was one of my least favourite installments, so you're actually 1-up'ing me. LOL Felicity Heaton is going to make us wait a little longer for Bleu I suspect (I'm dying inside a little bit. Cruel & unusual punishment). Thanks for posting your review on my birthday! Sorry I didn't catch it until now, but it's hockey playoff time, and that pretty much says it all (if you're Canadian). Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteIt is great to see that this book still packed a punch even though it was just a novella. I am curious about the rarity of Hell Cats and why she waould be in a fight with a male one... Sounds like a great read!
