Sidekick Showcase (previously known as Sidekick Saturday) is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

In honor of Halloween, for the entire month of October, Jaclyn has chosen Creatures of the Night as the theme. This includes witches, werewolves, vampires, ghouls, ghosts, zombies, and any other monster. :)
My pick for this week is:
Malleus, Maleficarum, & Spud
Guard Demons
from Stacia Kane's Megan Chase series
I know they're actually 3 characters, rather than one, and therefore, I'm skirting the rules yet again...but these brothers are a package deal, so I felt I could use them as a single. I mean, they're good at their job, but sometimes it seems they're sharing ONE brain. ;)

I have to admit that I had intended to showcase Greyson Dante, Fire Demon, this week. But this trio of brothers had me giggling as I was searching for quotes, so I changed my mind.
Malleus, Maleficarum and Spud are Cockney Guard Demons assigned by Greyson to guard Megan. They take their job very seriously. They, of course, protect her. But they end up serving Megan in so many other ways including doing her hair and makeup for special occasions. They end up loving her, I think. And they add lots of humor, which is the main reason I chose them. :)

"No need to thank us, m'lady," Malleus said. "Mr. Dante told us we was needed and here we are. Ready to guard you. With our lives, you know."
"Yeh," said Spud.
"Well, that's fine. But I wonder if you could go wait in the living room while I shower and change?"
"Sorry," said Malleus. "But Mr. Dante said we was to guard you. Every minute, 'e said. So we can't let you out of our sight."
"I'm sure he didn't mean when I'm--" she didn't want to say "naked" in front of them, so she substituted "--undressed. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that. I'm sure you unnderstand."
"Mr. Dante said every minute, and that's what we're gonna do."
"I don't think he wanted us to watch the lady when she's all undressed," Maleficarum said. "She don't want you starin' at her naked."
"'e said every minute, Lif." Malleus folded his arms across his beefy chest. "You wanna be the one wot tells him we didm't do what he said? Yo wanna tell 'im we let her get done over or somefing? 'Cos I don't. He'll 'ave our heads, he will."
"I think he'll be angrier if 'e finds out we been lookin' at her naked," Maleficarum said. "I think she's 'is."

"I can't believe this," Malleus muttered. "A beautiful girl like you, and you don't even know 'ow to do your own face."
Megan blushed, from the compliment or the insult she wasn't sure. "Fine." She picked up her makeup bag and handed it over. "You pick something."
Maleficarum took it. "Roight. And Spud'll do your 'air."
"Wait a minute. I was joking."
"Aw, no. We're gonna make you look pretty tonight, m'lady, don't you fret none. Sit down."

Gah! Yet another series I haven't started yet. And I'm a huge Stacia Kane fan, I'm pretty sure this is right up my alley. Good thing it's already on my TBR, because that shelf is pretty much overflowing, and I know I would have added it if it wasn't there.
ReplyDeleteGreat quotes! Now I really feel like I need to get to know these demons. Like right now!
Have a great day, Brandee! *hugs*
Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews
I figured you would have read this series, Lexxie, since you love Stacia as much as I do! I actually read this series before Chess (which I'm not caught up). There are only 4 in Megan's series. They're not as gritty as Chess' books are but I really liked them. ;)
DeleteI hope you have a lovely day, Lexxie! *hugs*
Wait...what...how did I miss a Stacia Kane series? Excuse me while I run over to B&N really quick.....*tappy tap tap*....okay Book 1 is downloading now. Thanks for the heads up Brandee! Don't let me do that again!
ReplyDelete*gasp* What?!? You didn't know about this series?? Oh, Traci, I'm so sorry...I didn't know. LOL I think you'll like Megan & Greyson...the series isn't as dark as Chess', but I read it before I met Chess and I really liked it. :)
