THE MAGPIE BRIDGE
I Am Just/Not Junco
J. A. Huss

Published: March 27, 2013
Genre: New Adult Science Fiction

RANGE INFO

Two years have passed since Inanna stole Junco away from Lucan. Two years of unimaginable pain. Two years of isolation, mutilation and torture. Two years of fear and loneliness in a morph tank. And that's not something you just get over, even if you are psycho-assassin, Junco Coot.

Now Junco has to learn to live with the consequences. Her Siblings are suspicious and angry, half her team is dead, Tier is wreaking death and destruction, Lucan is holding his secrets close, and she is spiraling out of control.

There is only one partnership that matters anymore - only one person she will trust and take direction from - and only one way out of the Hell she's been sentenced to.

Junco is tired of fighting and death. She's had enough and this time she means to end it - once and for all.

Ashur Interviews Tier

Hey everyone - Ashur here… Junco asked me to introduce Tier's interview since I happen to know him best. I thought I'd spice things up a bit and add my take on his questions…enjoy!

Character profile: Raubtier, Aves 039-1

Physical Description: 6'1, 185 lbs. black hair, green eyes. I think this is a stupid question, let's move on. No one cares what I look like, only how well I fight. (ASHUR: I look just like him, only smarter.)

Actor who could play you in a movie: Next… (ASHUR: I agree, that's like a total chick question.)

Job: Second in Command to Lucan, Captain of the 039. (ASHUR: So he thinks…)

Favorite gun: Whatever's available when I need it, which isn't often. (ASHUR: Tier only uses guns if they're handy, otherwise he's all about slashing throats.)

Favorite MMA move: The flying knee because that throws them off every time. It's like, splat, there goes your jaw. Bye… (ASHUR: Yeah, the flying knee is brutal. That shit totally hurts.)

Favorite Team Member: Ashur. (ASHUR: Awwwww…he loves me.)

Favorite vaca spot: Next… (ASHUR: Secretly, Tier loves Disney World)

Favorite food: I'll eat anything, who cares? Food is food. Although Junco is an excellent cook and I enjoy her human meals. (ASHUR: Junco makes an awesome pineapple upside-down cake)

Age: In Clutch I'm 24. In Fledge and Flight I'm 25…Range takes place when I'm 27.

Birthday: I have no idea when my birthday was - sometime in the Clutch year of 2127 maybe. The only day that counts is your morphday. Mine is March 9, 2139 and since the 039 were all sent back from Earth at the same time, we all morphed together. So all the members of the 039 share the same morphday. (ASHUR: We have a raging fucking party every year. Invitation only.)

Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

Favorite Color: Black

Favorite Song: Everything by Metallica (ASHUR: Dude, do you remember that time we saw Ozzy and Metallica, and Van Halen and Metallica, and all those other times we saw Metallica? If you do, let me know - because they're a little fuzzy in my memory for some reason….)

Words to live by: Trust me. (ASHUR: pffft.)

Perfect Saturday Night: At home with Junco. (ASHUR: Yeah, me too… except with Selia.)

Three traits that best describe me: Rational, ruthless, and loyal. (ASHUR: Well, I'd say asshole, asshole, and asshole. Is three all we get?)

What did you want to be when you grew up: A good guy. (ASHUR: Good guy? You don't even come close, brother. Sorry.)

Day or night: Night. The best part of my day is sleeping next to Junco. (ASHUR: I got nothing for this one.)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really-Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master's degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

My Interview with J.A. Huss

As I mentioned, while reading the Junco series, I made many notes. And I had a few questions. Ms. Huss was kind enough to answer them for me. Because she's just bad-ass like that! ;)

Where did Junco come from - the idea of her and her world?

Junco was a total mistake. I had an idea (which is the fourth and fifth books of the series) about aliens coming back to Earth after thousands of years and the guy (this story was about Gideon
first, but his name was Finn back then) who was the “hero” was mind-twined with this really broken girl (who was not Junco, but Emeleen). And he had an AI (she was always Sera) who was helping him raise these ancient pillars that would end up being a massive weapons system. (little Book Five spoiler)

This was the basic story and I had lots of plans, but then I got nervous about writing such a big book my first time out, and thought I’d better write something a bit simpler (LOL) first.

So Junco and Tier were my simple answer to that freak out. It was supposed to be a one book Amanda-Hocking-ish paranormal romance, but as you can see, I failed. It’s an epic SF fantasy.
Junco took over and then I was going to end her part in the series at book three, give her a happy ending and let Gideon and Sera take over as was first planned, but I couldn’t find a way to make
the ending happy for Junco. So, she got all five books.

Where does the mythology you use in the series come from?

All the mythology comes from ancient Sumeria.  I read this book a couple years ago, The Twelfth Planet, and I could not get this guy's interpretation of ancient history out of my mind.  I'm a big fan of that show Ancient Aliens, because that's what my original premise for the series was about.  So all the mythology comes from this The Twelfth Planet book, I just changed everyone's name except Inanna's.  There really are Seven Evil Demons and the opera thing Junco goes to in Fledge is a real story about Inanna being selfish and her descent into the underworld, where she requires a proxy to take her place when she leaves, is also a major story in that mythology.  The Seven Siblings is a new take on the Seven Sisters and when Esta is explaining the cylinder seals in Flight, that's all real too.  I think I own every book on Ancient Sumeria that is easily available.

All the mythology will be explained in the last book when the Angels return. (The Angels are straight out of The Book of Enoch and the final battle is based on the War Scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls).  Really, nothing I wrote is new, I just turned it into science fiction instead of ancient history/mythology.

Is there any of you in Junco? (by the way, I read your NA WTF post and I KNOW there's some of you in Junco ;)

Yes, she gets her filthy mouth from me. :) And the entire setting in Clutch is my “neighborhood”, which is in a weird spot, just south-east of Denver, and lies on a unique biome border between Rocky Mountain foothills and high plains prairie. Peak City is Colorado Springs, BTW. I never said that in any of the books, but I can see both Mount Evans (Denver) and Pikes Peak (Springs) from my house, and that’s exactly what Junco is looking at when she sits on the red rock with Tier.

Why cigars??

Cigarettes were boring. And all kick-ass girls smoke cigars – Kara Thrace, especially, from the Battlestar Gallactica series.

Have you ever lived in Texas? Because you are spot on describing Texans...and Dallas! :)

I have not lived in Texas, but I have many relatives there. Texans are a unique species of humans…you can only describe them as, well…Texans. And if the US ever fell apart, Texas would stick together. I think it will always be Texas. It’s a comforting constant.

Playlist? (for you while writing) And what do you think Junco would listen to?

I think Junco’s favorite artist is P!NK. In fact, I based Cora in Range off P!NK because I listen to more P!NK than anything else when I’m writing Junco. I think Cora is a good character and she will definitely be back in some way in book five.

Each book has a song that really describes the main plot line:

The song for Clutch would be The Truth Is by Go Radio because Junco is looking to trust someone and she decides to give that trust to Tier.

For Fledge it’s Overburdened by Disturbed because Junco is starting to realize her life is not going anywhere good.

For Flight it’s Happy Endings are Stories that Haven’t Ended Yet by Mayday Parade, because even though she has a happy-ish ending, it’s definitely far from over.

For Range it’s The Great Escape by P!NK, because that’s all she can think about, how to get the hell out of her life.

For Magpie Bridge, I chose Demons by Imagine Dragons, because that’s all about Tier.

And for Return, I’m not sure yet. I usually choose a playlist before I start writing and then I listen to it on repeat as I write.

  3. Absolutely awesome post, Brandee! How could I not want to read this series with everything that I hear about from you. Thanks to you, I will be on my way to enjoying it as soon as I tear down some more books from my to-read list. I loved the interviews! I think character interviews are a ton of fun and the boys were a blast to read about. I have way too many bad boys to list one favorite, but I'll go with Jericho Barrons for today :D LOVED the comments on Texans LOL. I also could not grow a plant if my life depended on it. I have so much fun learning about what parts of authors are found in their books. Thank you so much for sharing! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. Thanks so much, Jaclyn! As I said to Andrea (above) - this is just a unique series and I love the characters and I just want everyone to love Junco as much as I do! LOL I'm glad you enjoyed this post. It is fun to see how much of themselves authors share in their books. Oh, another thing we have in common - I can't grow plants either. Can't even keep ivy alive! ;) And about the Texans - wait until you read Range. Junco tells about Texans and it's just so "us"! LOL

Anyway, thanks for taking to the time to comment. I appreciate it. Oh, and I love Barrons too! ;)

    3. Let me try this again without the typos!

For my 2¢ - who doesn't love Jericho Barrons? And who wouldn't love to own Barrons' Books & Baubles??? *sigh* That would be an ideal job - owning a bookstore and getting to do all the buying and earn a living just reading everything you could get your greedy hands on (well at least my hands are greedy when it comes to books ).. . .
