Rachel (Songs of Submission, #5.5)Rachel by CD Reiss
Songs of Submission #5.5
Release Date: July 9, 2013
Genre: Erotic Romance

Source: Purchased ebook
Rating: 5 Bookworms

Synopsis
Do people like you ever have wishes Jonathan?

What does that mean? People like me?

People who have everything. Was there ever something you wanted, but could only wish for?

Rachel provides a glimpse at several events that shaped Jonathan into the man Monica meets. Rachel is rather a mystery until this part of the story. We've heard her name - Jessica has tried to use Rachel to drive a wedge between Jonathan and Monica. Here, we get some insight into all that went down with Rachel, as well as the reasons behind the animosity between Jonathan and his father. Reiss presents these insights as we see Jonathan at his and Jessica's engagement party. One thing I'd really like to understand? What did Jonathan ever see in Jessica. From what I've seen, she's conniving, manipulative and self-serving. I appreciated this look at the softer side of Jonathan though.

This is a short read but such an integral part of the story overall. Things are revealed - even something Jonathan had buried deep in his memory - pieces of the puzzle are laid out for us to peruse...and try to fit together. Reiss is an amazing storyteller. I'm anxious to see the next pieces in the puzzle.

Synopsis
The story of Jonathan Drazen and Monica Faulker continues.

And it's time Monica stepped up to the plate.

I looked down at him, with his tourmaline eyes and copper hair and believed him despite my better judgment. Then I forgave him despite my misgivings. I loved him just because I did. My heart wasn't sensible or guarded enough. Not by a sight.

I was a walking raw nerve ending of emotion, as if the years I'd spent away from men and sex had made me more emotional, more vulnerable, more foolish than before. I ran my fingers through his hair, feeling like the victim of a crime of consent.

Omigosh! I must say that I'm so glad I had all these available to read immediately because Reiss' cliffhangers would make me want to jump off a cliff! :) But they're part of what makes this series so addictive.

In Resist, Jonathan is dealing with the fallout and the possible fallout over the events in Burn. I got so irritated with Jonathan over his actions towards Monica. But then he said,
"It's wrong to want to protect you? To keep you above my shit? A goddess?"
and I understood. I didn't necessarily agree with him - I mean, they committed to one another - but I understood his motives.

I delighted in Monica's emotional growth. She's finally acknowledging her feelings and not worrying about what others think. Things are also moving forward in her career and that's nice to see. Jonathan shows some emotional growth as well. They're both afraid - resisting - what they could have together.

I think Resist shows a more mature Monica and Jonathan - accepting what's between then and wanting to work at staying together. They are at odds over Monica helping with Jonathan's legal problems but no matter - Monica may be submissive and obedient in the bedroom but that does not extend outside of it. Oh, and those legal issues...it didn't surprise me to find out Jessica was behind them. The more I see of her, the more I wonder how Jonathan ever loved her.

More puzzle pieces are laid out for us in Resist. And we finally see where some of them fit. Answers to burning questions are given and this story keeps getting better and better.

That ending was a killer! It was shocking and emotional and since I was on a plane, I was thrilled I had already downloaded the next one. ;) I've said it before but CD Reiss is an incredibly talented writer. If y'all haven't started this series yet, I don't know what you're waiting for!

  3. More often than not, I find that novellas are a waste of time, so I'm glad that Rachel packed a decent punch considering its length. And, it's always a good sign when you've already downloaded the next installment before having even finished reading the current one. It sounds like the author absolutely nailed Monica and Jonathan's emotional growth which is an important element in the Erotic Romance genre IMO. I hope you have an excellent weekend, Brandee!

    1. Yeah, you don't really HAVE to read Rachel but there are just a few things that really add to the overall story. *grins* Reiss just has a way with words, Carmel. Her writing is just gorgeous!! I really was impressed with their emotional growth and was happy to see it. It was necessary. Anyway, if you give this a shot, I hope you love it. I hope you have a lovely weekend, too, Carmel!

  5. Really, Brandee . . . really, I'm going to read these. Maybe I should at least try the reading calendar thing . . . even if I don't stick to it completely, at least I'd have a "plan." ;)

  6. I need to read these. I know I keep saying that, but I seriously do want to read them. Good to know that the novella is a must, you never know with series anymore if they're just fluff or important. And expect cliff hangers. Got it! Great reviews Brandee!

  7. Your reviews made me want to read this serial, too, Brandee. And I'll make sure I have them all on hand before I start reading. Cliff-hangers tend to make me want to hurl my kindle across the room :D
I love it when novellas bring something important to the story-arc of a series, especially because I don't always have the time to read a full-length story. The shorter ones can make me very happy when they're well done like these seem to be.
I hope you're having an amazing weekend, Brandee. *BIG HUGS*
